By Oliver Pearson 28 March 2018
The latest in a series of exciting go-anywhere superyachts, the 110m/361ft custom expedition yacht ‘Project Icecap’ is due to be built by Lurssen and launched inside of three years.
Confirmed to be entering her build phase at Lurssen, superyacht Project Icecap will boast go-anywhere seafaring capabilities as well as spacious accommodation for 20 guests across 10 well-appointed cabins. What’s more, with an interior volume exceeding 6500GT, there’s bound to be many exciting social areas for the owner and his guests to return to following a day of adventure.
Shrouded in secrecy, a great deal of the details pertaining to the expedition yacht remain a mystery. However, an exciting graphic rendering reveals that Project Icecap will feature a helipad and infinity pool on the aft and inverted bow to allow her to effortlessly cruise in extreme terrains.
The latest in a growing trend, Project Icecap shares many similarities with new expedition yachts like the 74m/240ft expedition yacht ‘Planet Nine’ . Indeed, the ability to travel to far-flung destinations in comfort is clearly becoming something of a high priority amongst elite travelers and superyacht owners.
What are the benefits of an expedition yacht?
Capable of cruising in arctic conditions and reaching more remote destinations, expedition yachts are able to treat guests to altogether new experiences whilst offering the comfort they expect from modern superyachts.
Often equipped with additional tenders which can be used to reach otherwise inaccessible points of interest, expedition yachts also frequently come with certified helipads to make getting to and from the vessel even more convenient.
Ultimately, by owning or chartering an expedition yacht it is possible to:
- Discover faraway destinations in comfort
- Experience totally isolated cruising grounds
- Be amongst the first to explore fascinating parts of the globe
Allowing owners and guests to enjoy the world’s most far-flung and fascinating destinations in complete comfort, expedition yachts unlock a range of unique experiences
Can you charter expedition yachts?
Just like motor yachts and sailing yachts , it is possible to charter an expedition yacht with your friends and family in order to enjoy an unforgettable getaway.
Popular destinations for expedition yachts include the colder climes of Antarctica and Alaska as well as the more mild and rural cruising grounds of Norway and Greenland. To get some inspiration, be sure to check out our piece on 6 of the best destinations to visit by expedition yacht .
Some examples of expedition yachts for charter include the award-winning 73m/238ft expedition yacht CLOUDBREAK and fellow award-winning 71m/234ft expedition yacht ‘Enigma XK’ .
Set to be the world’s largest superyacht when delivered in 2020, the 182m/596ft expedition yacht REV will also be open for charter when she’s not carrying out scientific research.
Whilst M/Y Project Icecap is not expected to be made available for private yacht charter vacations, be sure to take a look at all of the expedition yachts for charter .

109m Lürssen superyacht Project Icecap sold
The 109 metre new-build superyacht Project Icecap has been sold by Moran Yacht & Ship .
Due to be built from steel at German yard Lürssen and launched in 2021, Project Icecap's existence was first revealed in the 2018 Global Order Book . This five-deck motor yacht will feature a total interior volume of more than 6,500GT and Moran Yacht & Ship’s new construction team will supervise the build process.
Details are few and far between at this stage, as might be expected of such a spectacular project, but it is understood that Project Icecap will feature state-of-the-art energy saving, power storage, heating and cooling systems. What’s more, her interior will offer luxurious accommodation for up to 20 guests split across ten cabins.
As the initial rendering above reveals, her key features will include an aft-deck infinity pool, a fold-out superyacht beach club, an upper-deck helipad and three fixed terraces built into the stacked forward superstructure. Most notably, the inverted bow design hints at polar cruising capability, something that is reinforced by the choice of project name.
No designers have been named so far, but Moran Yacht & Ship did reveal that this colossal yacht will be powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system. The asking price of Project Icecap has been withheld, but this is understood to be the largest brokerage deal of 2018 so far.
Other 100 metre plus superyachts currently under construction at Lürssen include the 139 metre Project Redwood — a scheduled 2019 launch — and the 136 metre Project Shu , which began sea trials earlier this month.

Project Icecap , a highly confidential 107 metre superyacht, has been spotted for the first time after her wraps were removed earlier this week.
She is currently in the final stages of construction at Peene-Werft, a shipyard in north-eastern Germany that forms part of Lürssen’s naval division.
The yacht has remained largely out of the spotlight until now, but delivery is expected towards the end of 2022. The project was originally sold in March 2018 by Moran Yacht & Ship and the company is also managing the construction.
First images reveal a sharply inverted bow and large aft deck helipad which suggest polar capacities. Exterior design comes from Norwegian studio Salt Ship Design and renderings indicate she will be painted midnight blue.
The steel and aluminium yacht features a total interior volume of more than 6,500GT and is expected to offer accommodation for up to 20 guests split across ten cabins.
In the past, Moran also revealed that Project Icecap will be powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system and will feature state-of-the-art energy saving, power storage, heating and cooling systems.
Renderings of the yacht were first revealed in 2018, shortly after the sale was finalised.
Other key features include an aft-deck infinity pool, a fold-out superyacht beach club, an upper-deck helipad and three fixed terraces built into the stacked forward superstructure.
Project Icecap joins five other superyachts measuring over 100 metres under construction at Lürssen, including the soon-to-be-launched Project Opera and the recently spotted Project Alibaba . Last spotted in May 2021, Project Opera is currently getting ready to roll out of the construction shed in Bremen.
Once delivered, Project Icecap will become of the world’s largest superyachts , sitting somewhere around number 48 on the leaderboard.
