The first 9-hole golf course opened in 1955; today there are two championship 18-hole courses (rarely found in the Keys), that are distinctly different. Both have great views and provide enjoyable challenges to all levels of players. The Dolphin Course is an island golf course with expansive fairways, exotic tropical landscaping, and water hazards. The Hammocks Course is partially set in a wildlife sanctuary of mangroves and tropical hardwood hammocks. Scenic fairways wind through hammocks and water hazards for a challenging course.

Buccaneer Island is the center of aquatic recreational activities with two swimming pools, beach, aquatic sports, a watercraft rental fleet—sailboats, kayaks, windsurfers, paddleboards (SUPs), and more for fun on the ocean or enclosed beachfront lagoon. SCUBA diving and snorkeling trips are available to the nearby Great Florida Reef—the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. Eco-Kayak and SUP Tours launch from Buccaneer Island to paddle through mangroves, bird rookeries, and crystal-clear water. Ocean Reef Club’s private Marina offers 175 slips on Unifloat® concrete docks for vessels up to 175ft constructed by Bellingham-Marine in 2011.

The marina often hosts yachts visiting from distant ports and provides the same world-class service expected of much larger international sailing ports. Dockmaster Services include docking assistance, 110v & 220v, 100amp & 100amp 3 phase electrical hook-ups, waste removal, mail service, message delivery, shower and restroom facilities, coin laundry, pump-out service, full-service fuel dock, security and clearance, and Marina Fitness Center. Transport to and from docks to all Ocean Reef destinations is provided. Private dining and catering are available. Ocean Reef Club has its own fleet of charter boats and offers a range of recreational fishing trips. The Orvis Ocean Reef Pro Shop is in the Fishing Village and features fly-fishing school, deep sea/reef fishing, and flats/shallow water sight fishing trips.

North Key Largo with its proximity to Miami (especially by water) has had an interesting history. Early settlements in the 1800s were very sparse and meager records exist to corroborate land ownership and settlers’ activities. One of the first land purchases in North Key Largo was by Samuel S. Lowe, who homesteaded 900 acres to farm pineapples, which evidently was the crop of the late 1800s in the upper Keys. It was estimated that 85% of pineapples in the U.S. came from Key Largo.

Another Lowe bought land in the late 1800s, Bahamian Thomas Lowe Sr, who grew pumpkins, melons, and kept bees. It is surmised that Pumpkin Island got its name from Tom Lowe’s pumpkins, grown on the island to avoid rodents. Flagler’s railroad to Miami in 1896 brought an influx of new settlers and speculators to the area and the early North Key Largo farmers were surrounded by privately owned land purchased by speculators. Land changed hands frequently in the early 20th century. The Card Sound Road with a wooden swing bridge was built in 1927 making road traffic easier to northern Key Largo and in 1928, State Road 4A was completed for automotive traffic via the new State Road and two ferries all the way to Key West. Most of the land was deeded at the time of WWI, but not significantly developed; mostly farms growing pineapples and Key limes. W.A. Scott of Fargo, ND built a splendid 2-story coral rock house and farmed his land until 1932.

A remnant of the house was incorporated into the Clubhouse of the Key Largo Anglers Club. Scott’s property had changed hands many times prior to his ownership, and in 1932 it was sold to the Roney Investment Company, aka Florida Year Round Club, that also owned The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables and the Roney Plaza at Miami Beach. The property was developed into an early exclusive resort with guest cottages. Guests were transported by Aerocar, an early type of shuttle bus that was towed by car, and for the wealthiest guests, a faster “high tech” mode of transport was utilized; “Auto Gyro,” a cross between airplane and helicopter that was considered a status symbol at that time. The Anglers Club was sold in 1936 and closed during WWII years (1939—1945). Several U.S. Presidents enjoyed fishing the Keys, especially President Hoover who fished with The Angler Club guide, Calvin Albury from 1948-1955, and became one of the first members to join the Club in 1957 when The Anglers Club was owned and operated by Clint Campbell and wife. Former President Hoover, who stayed in the Dashiell Hammett Cottage (Hoover Cottage) was made Honorary Lifetime Commodore, until his passing in 1964. The Anglers Club eventually transitioned to an equity member-owned private club.

Northwest of The Anglers Club on the oceanside of North Key Largo, Flo and Seymour Robinson were caretakers of the Despatch Creek Fishing Camp in 1942, accessed by a muddy road leading from The Anglers Club. They later moved to Key West for their daughter’s schooling and their home eventually became the fish camp and small lodge owned by Morris Baker, a Real Estate Developer from Minnesota and his wife, Alice. They had intended to buy The Anglers Club, which was not available then, so they acquired 40 acres at the mouth of Despatch Creek and first visited the property in 1946. By the end of the 1950s they increased their land ownership to 1,300 acres that later developed into Ocean Reef Club, one of the wealthiest private property developments in the United States. The visionary Bakers had channels dredged, docks built, land filled, roads built, and added an inn with coffee shop, gas station, and water tower. The airport with 2000-ft landing strip opened in 1956 making the property accessible by land, sea, and air. After Morris Baker’s death in 1959, his sons William and Roger continued the planned development of the property with the construction of recreational facilities, golf courses, country clubs, and homes. 300 home sites were offered for sale in October 1959. An early version of the “Boatel” was introduced as small prefab luxury cottages were transported in and installed along select waterways where boat owners could keep their boats and live in the rented cottages.

In 1969, ownership of the development was transferred to Harper Sibley Jr and partner Morris Burke, official founders of The Ocean Reef Club. Additional amenities were added, including a full-time medical facility. Improvements were financed by American Financial Corporation. Then in 1985, Members began discussion of acquisition with American Financial. They formed an Acquisitions Committee and were finally successful in negotiating the sale in 1993 to the individual property owners association—Ocean Reef Club Association (ORCA).

Improvements in infrastructure after WWII led to rapid growth and development in the Upper Keys causing major concern for the fragile Keys ecosystems. Federal laws were enacted in the mid-1960s to protect endangered species and air quality. In 1970, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established and in 1972, the Clean Water Act was passed. With rampant dredging and land filling throughout the Keys, an unsuccessful attempt was made to legislate development at State level with the “Area of Critical State Concern” designation which was later ruled unconstitutional by the State Supreme Court.

Although many concerned residents tried to slow or halt proposed major development projects, in the end, the lender pulled the plug on a developer’s overextended loan and that ended it in North Key Largo. The Federal government and State of Florida have been buying up tracts of land on both sides of CR905, the main north-south road in North Key Largo, for conservation. Some former properties’ structures were allowed to revert to their natural state, such as the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, home to Florida Crocodiles. The historical Ocean Reef Club and The Anglers Club continue to thrive as exclusive, private gated communities on the remote northern tip of Key Largo.

Among the many amenities of Ocean Reef Club, are the excellent dining choices with a dozen restaurants and lounges offering views of the ocean, marina, and golf course. Raw Bar features the freshest oysters, clams, seasonal stone crabs, shrimp, and fish harvested from local waters. A Maine Lobster Bake is offered on Thursdays during winter season. Town Hall Waterside features dining under an open-air tent or under the stars. Beach Grill offers “family” favorites and a selection of cocktails on Buccaneer Island. Members and guests can enjoy lunch at the beach—no need to leave. Reef Treats serves ice cream and other sweet treats plus coffee, breakfast, and lunch items.

The Rum Runner is a golf cart tricked out to serve cold beverages and cocktails, light lunch items, and snacks directly on the Hammock Course. Members only, CH Prime restaurant is currently closed for renovations. The Reef Lounge, also closed for renovation, had its historic beginnings at Ocean Reef as a traditional favorite gathering spot with great views of Buccaneer Island. The Cooking School at Carysfort Kitchen features hands-on classes, culinary events, and specialty dinners with culinary superstars as well as Ocean Reef’s own acclaimed chefs. Able to seat 10 to 100 guests, the world-class kitchen and entertaining venue is available for private parties, business functions, bridal functions, and other events for chef demos and hands-on cooking classes.

The Cultural Center is the venue for entertainment and educational events for members and residents. Features a 300-seat theater, library, museum, meeting rooms, courtyard for outdoor receptions, and a spacious lobby that is perfect for preshow events. Ocean Reef’s Fishing Village is designed like a charming coastal New England village center, surrounded by the marina. The Orvis Pro Shop is in the Fishing Village, along with an excellent selection of shops and boutiques for Ocean Reef Club logo products, electronics, jewelry, clothing shoes, home décor, art, books, flowers, wine & spirits, gourmet groceries and more. The Spa offers stellar salon and spa care in an 8000 sq ft spa facility set on Ocean Reef’s 2,500 acres of rich tropical foliage in the Florida Keys. The facility features massage and treatment rooms, experience shower, dry sauna, men’s and ladies’ steam rooms, a relaxation lounge, retail boutique, VIP couples’ suite.

Services include body treatments, basic skincare services, waxing and sugaring, manicures, pedicures, haircuts, coloring, styling for ladies and men, several types of facials, massage, Ayurveda, teen and children’s service, spa packages for well-being, fitness, and lifestyle, and much more.

The Member Fitness Center features state-of-the-art equipment and enhanced services exclusively for Members. Aerobics, spinning classes, Pilates studio, training room, expanded juice bar with café menu are just some of the activities and services offered. The Fitness pool has 8 lanes, and the Center offers aquatic fitness classes, and Masters Swim Program with 4-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Jon Olsen. Ocean Reef’s

Tennis & Games Center has two locations with 12 courts each; 6 are lit for evening play. The Center includes a tennis pro shop and USTA professional teaching staff. Pickleball is played on a court the size of a badminton doubles court—6 courts are available. There is a full-size grass Croquet court for recreational or competitive play. Traditional white attire is required. The Center also features a Card & Game room for weekly bridge games plus canasta, mah jongg, and poker. Private events and lessons are available.

A Visitor’s Guide to the Florida Keys: Trip Planning

The Florida Keys are one of the Sunshine State’s most popular tourist destinations. This group of more than 1,700 islands located off the southern tip of Florida is divided into the Upper, Middle, and Lower Keys and stretches to the southernmost city in the continental United States: Key West. A visit to the Florida Keys is a great way to enjoy some nature, history, and fun in the sun on your next vacation.

Your Guide to a Memorable Stay in the Florida Keys

Preparing for travel.

If you look at a map of the Florida Keys, you’ll notice the area isn’t that large, but with so much island territory, it’s important to prepare for weather and transportation needs.

When to Visit

The Florida Keys weather is fairly predictable. This tropical climate has mild and pleasant winters with temperatures around 70 degrees. Summers are warm and humid, around 90 degrees. Visit earlier in the year if you want to avoid the rainy season from June to October. You’ll run the risk of hurricanes from June 1 to Nov. 30, although the Florida Keys experience fewer hurricanes than other parts of Florida.

How to Get There

Driving from mainland Florida along U.S. Route 1 (the Overseas Highway) is the most scenic route into the Keys. The Florida Keys airport in Key West is convenient and has rental cars and shuttles available to visitors if you don’t want to visit any other Florida destinations first.

Where to Stay

From Miami to Key West, the drive is about three hours, so it’s possible to explore all of the best Florida Keys attractions no matter where you stay along the route.

All-Inclusive Resorts

While not the most popular lodging option in the area, all-inclusive resorts in the Florida Keys can be a great option for travelers who want a carefree and luxurious experience.

The newly renovated Casa Marina Resort in Key West offers romantic luxury, a private beach, an on-site spa, and occasional all-inclusive package deals. Book a stay at Little Palm Island Resort and Spa where the all-inclusive resort boasts an entirely private island for its guests for the ultimate indulgent beach location. The Parrot Key Hotel & Villas is a great option for more budget-conscious travelers who still want an all-inclusive feel, and some packages offer great family-friendly tours and entertainment.

Best Family Spots

Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo offers classes for kids during the day including a fishing program that might just provide your next meal. Hotels in Key West include the Hyatt Centric Key West Resort & Spa — with lots of rental gear and large, private balconies — and the Southernmost Beach Resort — within walking distance of many fun attractions.

Vacation Rentals

Getting a vacation rental in the Florida Keys is an easy way to experience local neighborhoods and avoid the most crowded tourist hotels. Make sure to check parking accommodations as many areas have limited space.

Popular Attractions

The Florida Keys are packed with attractions highlighting the vibrant nightlife, cultural events, and marine ecosystem.

Embrace Nature

One of the best reasons to visit the Florida Keys is to experience marine wildlife up close and personal. Dry Tortugas National Park is west of Key West hosting Fort Jefferson and an impressive array of local birds and coral reefs. Visitors must arrive by boat or seaplane, adding to the adventure and sense of exploration. There are guided tours and opportunities for snorkeling and diving in one of Florida’s most active reef environments. In the Islamorada area, head to Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park for a kayaking adventure through a hardwood hammock.

The Turtle Hospital in Marathon is a great way to learn about marine conservation and help support animal rehabilitation efforts. Visitors can even feed the turtles after a guided tour. If swimming with dolphins or meeting a local parrot is more your speed, head to Theater of the Sea in Islamorada to enjoy a whole day of marine fun.

Experience the Culture

The Florida Keys host year-round events, festivals, and artist workshops among the shops and local gathering spots in several downtown areas. In Key West, head to Duval Street for the best shopping and live music. You’ll also be near the Key West Aquarium for the perfect family-friendly afternoon outing. Mallory Square is also host to some of the area’s best artisans. Tour Earnest Hemingway’s Home and Museum or the Harry S. Truman Little White House if you’re more interested in exploring historic locations.

Enjoy the Beaches

One of the best reasons to visit the Florida Keys is to enjoy beach life. Head to Bahia Honda State Park for family-friendly nature trails and lovely sandy beaches. Sombrero Beach in Marathon is popular for family picnics and water sports.

Best Dining Spots

Don’t forget to plan and make reservations at some of the best breweries and restaurants in the Florida Keys.

Blue Heaven’s laid-back island vibes are almost as famous as its Key lime pie. Enjoy the art installations, tropical surroundings, and delicious weekend brunch at this popular Key West spot. The Fish House in Key Largo makes a perfect stop on your road trip coming or going to the mainland; daily specials mean it’s even worth a visit more than once.

If you need a break from seafood, head to M.E.A.T. Eatery and Taproom for award-winning burgers and 12 craft beers on tap. Lorelai Restaurant and Cabana Bar is the perfect place to enjoy nightly sunset entertainment and a delicious array of shareable appetizers.

A visit to the Florida Keys is sure to be full of memorable adventures no matter where you stay, eat, or play.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says 'next stop' for Haitians who land in Florida Keys may be Martha's Vineyard

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that Haitians fleeing the gang-controlled nation to South Florida could get shipped off to the destination island of Martha's Vineyard.

"We do have our transport program also that’s going to be operational," DeSantis said Tuesday on Dana Loesch's podcast.

"Haitians land in the Florida Keys – their next stop very well may be Martha’s Vineyard."

Florida is roughly 850 miles from Haiti and has been hit by an influx of migrants showing up to the Sunshine State's shores by boat amid the nation's conflict.

The Republican governor announced last week an increase of personnel and aircraft to the Florida coast in light of unrest in Haiti and the potential for an increase in migration via the sea from the conflict-hit country.

RON DESANTIS SAYS HE STEPPED IN TO ENSURE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, ACCUSED RAPIST IS BACK IN ICE CUSTODY

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

"The problem when you get to a situation like Florida is if they have people in our state and we wanted to fly them, say, back to Haiti, you have to get clearance to be able to do that. If you wanted to fly somebody to a South American country, wherever they’re from, it becomes a little bit more difficult because the federal government’s going to tell the host countries not to accept our planes," DeSantis said.

"It’s a little bit different for a maritime state like us," he continued. "That’s why we’ve really got to get them before they reach the shores, and that’s why we’re working so hard to do that."

The Caribbean nation has seen a significant escalation in violence after gangs overran the capital of Port-au-Prince, resulting in the resignation of embattled Prime Minister Ariel Henry. They burned police stations and ransacked the main airport, plunging the country into anarchy. Gangs have also raided some of the largest prisons, releasing thousands of inmates.

Aid groups say nearly 1.4 million people in the nation are on the verge of famine and more than 4 million need help accessing food.

DHS WARNS HAITIAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARRIVING BY BOAT FACE ‘IMMEDIATE REPATRIATION’

The defense deployment in Florida includes 48 additional National Guardsmen with four additional helicopters, 39 officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 30 additional Florida Highway Patrol officers with aircraft and drones, and 23 additional officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with eight additional seacrafts, according to DeSantis' office.

HAITIAN PRIME MINISTER ARIEL HENRY TO RESIGN AMID LOW-SCALE CIVIL WAR, BOWING TO INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE

On Friday, DeSantis said state law enforcement had intercepted a vessel coming to the Florida coast carrying dozens of Haitian migrants , as well as firearms, drugs and night vision gear.

"I’ve got to defend my state," DeSantis said. "I’ve got enough issues just dealing with people fleeing from blue states moving to Florida."

Fox News' Adam Shaw contributed to this report.

Rebooted ‘Road House,’ with Jake Gyllenhaal, doesn’t pass inspection

Part fight showcase, part generic crime thriller, prime video’s remake tosses its plot this way and that..

A buff Jake Gyllenhaal has the Patrick Swayze role of Dalton in the remake of "Road House."

A buff Jake Gyllenhaal has the Patrick Swayze role in the remake of “Road House.”

Prime Video

Hollywood keeps reaching back to the 1980s and 1990s for remakes that inevitably prove to be unnecessary and disposable. I suppose the good news is these updates or reboots or re-imaginings, or whatever you want to call them, leave such a light footprint that we quickly forget ‘em.

Let’s put it this way: If someone suggested watching “Red Dawn” or “Robocop” or “About Last Night …” or “Point Break,” would you immediately think of the remakes from the 2010s — or the originals? Does anyone remember ANYTHING about the 2012 version of “Total Recall” or the 2017 edition of “Flatliners”?

One imagines the same fate awaits the intermittently entertaining but clunky and quite dopey 2024 edition of “Road House.” Not that the 1989 original directed by Rowdy Herrington and starring Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott, Kelly Lynch and Ben Gazzara was some kind of classic, but it played like an elevated B-movie modern Western and had a clean and streamlined script that stayed on point throughout.

The remake bounces all over the place with a convoluted storyline, a number of superfluous characters and two main villains who are sorely lacking — one because he’s a bland nothing, the other because he's so far over the top it’s like he’s in a Saturday morning cartoon.

A shredded Jake Gyllenaal takes on the Swayze role as Dalton, but this time around Dalton’s first name is Elwood, which leads to a discussion in the film about embarrassing first names and the Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue,” and that’s a page of the script that should have been deleted before production commenced. Dalton is a former UFC standout with a troubled past (you can probably guess what happened) who is recruited by a woman named Frankie (Jessica Williams) to take over head bouncer duties at her roadhouse in the Florida Keys, which is named Road House, ha ha.

  • ‘Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant’ review: Jake Gyllenhaal in skillfully made and gripping war film

Over the last many weeks, a gang of movie-generic thugs have been igniting brawls and tearing the place up night after night, and Frankie can’t go to the cops because they’re on the take, and I guess nobody thinks to contact the media or capture the mayhem on smartphones and share it on YouTube. This is a self-contained community, sort of like a frontier town in the Old West, and for another cringe moment, there’s a precocious tween character who tells Dalton it’s like he’s the anti-hero in a Western.

Gyllenhaal’s Dalton doesn’t carry the Zen philosophies of his predecessor, but he does have a dark sense of humor, i.e., when he asks how far it is to the nearest hospital before taking on those aforementioned biker brutes, and then is nice enough to drive them to the emergency room after he’s busted ‘em up.

Unfortunately, those moments are few and far between, as “Road House” alternates between the expertly choreographed fight sequences that take place in the bar while various bands keep playing behind chicken wire, and a generic crime thriller plot that often takes us out on the water.

Billy Magnussen is a fine actor, but his Brandt is a clichéd character: the petulant and corrupt son of the local crime boss (who is in prison), who wants to take possession of the Road House so he can build, yep, a giant resort development that will rob the town of all its charms. Brandt is a lightweight and also an idiot; in an early scene, he demands that a barber shave him with a straight razor on his boat as it navigates some seriously choppy waters. This. Scene. Makes. No. Sense.

A mercenary (Conor McGregor) is hired by a crime boss to kill Dalton.

A mercenary (Conor McGregor) is hired by a crime boss to kill Dalton.

Even more regrettable is the casting of the colorful and controversial Irish mixed martial artist Conor McGregor as Knox, a psychopathic mercenary hired by Brandt’s dad to kill Dalton. All the over-the-top antics that make McGregor such an entertaining personality in real life are lost in translation to the big screen, as McGregor stomps around like he’s playing to the last row of an arena, and barks his lines as if he’s in a terribly written “SNL” sketch. It’s a performance that irritates like a grain of sand that has wafted into your eye.

Jessica Williams’ Frankie all but disappears from the story for large chunks of times. The wonderful Daniela Melchior has almost nothing to do in the Kelly Lynch role as the local doctor who takes a shine to Dalton. Post Malone is in this movie, but I’ve already almost forgotten that Post Malone is in this movie.

Director Doug Liman knows how to stage action films; his previous works include “The Bourne Identity,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “Edge of Tomorrow.” Many of the fights here are shown in long shots, and one imagines Gyllenhaal and McGregor and the supporting players and the stunt men all had a grand time tossing each other about and breaking lots of furniture.

Good on them. We’re ready to move on from the new “Road House” and cue up the original. It’s available on platforms such as Amazon Prime and YouTube and Fandango at Home — and I can hear 1989 Rick Dalton saying, “What’s a U-Tube? What’s Fandango and Home where? What are those words you’re saying?”

Previous HGTV Dream Home in Florida winner took cash option & sold the home: A look back

Who won 2024 hgtv dream home in florida winner will be notified before april 30, 2024..

sailboats for sale in the florida keys

Who won the 2024 HGTV Dream Home in Florida?

Also, will the winner keep the home ?

Now that the HGTV Dream Home 2024 contest has wrapped − a winner was likely picked from a drawing Feb. 29, 2024, aka Leap Day, with results pending until at least April 30, according to contest rules − it's simply a waiting game.

But what we do know is once a winner is announced, he or she will have the option to keep the HGTV Dream Home or take the cash option.

A few years ago, for example, the winner of the 2016 HGTV Dream Home in Florida cashed out. Here's a recap of what he did with the 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island, Florida , and when he won the sweepstakes. This could be a guide for whomever wins the 2024 HGTV Dream Home on Anastasia Island, Florida.

Who won 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island, Florida?

FLORIDA TODAY reported David Rennie of Shelton, Connecticut, won the 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island , Florida, along with $250,000, a 2016 Bryant Sperenza model boat and 2016 GMC Acadia Denali car. The 3,150-square-foot remodeled home had Indian River water views in its backyard. It was a three-bedroom, two-story home off South Tropical Trail. Features included water views, a grand staircase, luxury dog house, pool and private dock. It had outdoor lounging areas, Florida-inspired decor, bold colors, three bathrooms and two half-bathrooms. Rennie, HGTV said, was chosen from 127 million entries.

“I thought I won the lottery with the kidney," said Rennie, who received a kidney transplant a year before the HGTV Dream Home win. "That was life changing, but so is this. We just never thought it could get any better.”

How much were taxes on 2016 HGTV Dream Home in Florida?

HGTV valued the 2016 HGTV Dream Home prize package at $1.5 million, and with a top federal tax rate of 39.6%, David Rennie and his wife, Margaret, would have had to pay almost $540,000 just in 2016 federal income taxes on their win.

In a tweet, however, Rennie posted a photo of the 2016 HGTV Dream Home with the caption: "If only I had a spare $700K so that I could have paid the taxes! Well that is why they call it a 'Dream house.'"

What happened to 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island, Florida?

Here's a brief timeline:

April 2015: Real-estate agent Rhonda Pavone helped the network find the home, built in 1990 on one acre and sold for $826,000 in April 2015 to an HGTV-affiliated company, to remodel as part of the network's 20th anniversary. Its 2015 property taxes and assessments, based on the value before the makeover, were nearly $7,500.

March 30, 2016: David Rennie of Shelton, Connecticut, was named the 2016 HGTV Dream Home winner .

April 2016: Rennie had to decide whether he would take the $1.7 million grand prize package or the $1.2 million cash option , which included $900,000 cash, the GMC truck and model boat. He visited the 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island and blogged about it on Dave's Dialysis Diary . Rennie chose the cash option , and the house was listed at $1,530,000 later that month, according to 2016 story in FLORIDA TODAY .

June 2016: After David Rennie took the cash option instead of the 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island, Florida, the house was listed on the market, and real estate sites show the 2016 HGTV Dream Home sold June 8, 2016, for $1.3 million . According to Realtor.com, back then homes next door to the 2016 HGTV Dream Home had a median listing of $570,000 and nearby neighborhoods had a median listing ranging from $200,000 to $4 million, and Zillow.com "zestimated" the mortgage at roughly $4,600/month, the FLORIDA TODAY story states.

Coincidentally, the HGTV Urban Oasis home in West Asheville, N.C., was sold June 11, 2016, to a North Carolina couple for $399,999.

Where is HGTV Dream Home 2024?

The 2024 HGTV  Dream Home is on Anastasia Island  in Northeast Florida and described as "a grand coastal escape."

Who won 2024 HGTV Dream Home on Anastasia Island in Florida sweepstakes contest?

As of March 12, 2024, almost a month after voting officially closed for the 2024 HGTV Dream Home sweepstakes contest, a winner has not been announced.  Rules state : "One prospective grand prize winner will be selected in a random drawing from among all eligible entries received during the promotion period on approximately Feb. 29, 2024."

The grand prize winner will be contacted by HGTV.  Official rules state : "Prospective grand prize winner will be contacted either by phone, email, in writing or via an 'ambush style' visit by sponsor's representatives at the grand prize winner's home or other location between Feb. 30, 2024, and April 30, 2024. The prospective grand prize winner may be filmed or otherwise recorded during such visit by sponsor."  Note:  Feb. 30, 2024, is not an actual date, but this is what was on HGTV’s site as of Feb. 20, 2024.

Is there a cash option for HGTV Dream Home 2024 in Florida?

In lieu of taking title to the HGTV Dream Home 2024 (and the contents of the HGTV Dream Home), the grand prize winner could opt for the “cash option” or $650,000 in cash. Total ARV of the grand prize is $820,000 if grand prize winner selects the cash option in lieu of the HGTV Dream Home in Anastasia Island, Florida.

How much is HGTV Dream Home 2024 worth? What is total HGTV Dream Home grand prize package worth?

Value of the total  Anastasia Island HGTV Dream Home  package is estimated at just over $2.2 million. In total, the winner of the sweepstakes will receive:

  • Keys to the fully furnished home, which, according to rules, includes home furnishings, fixtures, artwork and merchandise for an approximate retail value of $2,069,595
  • A new Mercedes-Benz E Class sedan worth about $70,000, according to the rules
  • $100,000 cash

Can you sell the HGTV Dream Home if you win?

If you win the 2024 HGTV Dream Home on Anastasia Island, Florida, near St. Augustine, you can sell the home. Several past winners of HGTV's popular sweepstakes have done that.

The 2016 HGTV Dream Home winner, David Rennie, took the cash option, and his decision did not affect the “HGTV Dream Home 2016” episode hosted by HGTV personality Tiffany Brooks, who surprised Rennie with news that he won the sweepstakes at his church in Connecticut in March 2016.

Brooks went on to film a segment with the Rennie family on Merritt Island on April 15, 2016, for the big reveal. In an email to FLORIDA TODAY in 2016, HGTV said the “Dream Home” special already was in production and “in these specials, the focal point is the home itself as our viewers get a close-up look at the beauty and design of the house, as well as Mr. Rennie’s reaction to his prize. Regardless of his ultimate decision, he is still the HGTV Dream Home 2016 winner, and people get to share in his joy as he receives the keys and looks around the house for the first time.”

According to HGTV, “Some winners decide to keep the home and some take the cash option. It’s really a very personal decision, and each winner must decide what makes the most sense for them and their family at that moment in time. Everyone wants to live the dream of owning their own ‘dream home,’ but either way, for every winner it’s a dream come true.”

Vessel off Florida Keys identified as British warship that sank in the 18th century

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A wrecked seagoing vessel discovered decades ago off the Florida Keys has recently been identified as a British warship that sank in the 18th century.

National Park Service archaeologists used new research to determine that the wreckage first spotted in 1993 near Dry Tortugas National Park is the HMS Tyger, the agency said in a news release late last week. The findings were recently published in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology .

The HMS Tyger was a Fourth-Rate, 50-gun frigate built in 1647. It sank in 1742 after running aground on the reefs of the Dry Tortugas while on patrol in the War of Jenkins Ear between Britain and Spain.

“This discovery highlights the importance of preservation in place as future generations of archeologists, armed with more advanced technologies and research tools, are able to reexamine sites and make new discoveries,” maritime archaeologist Josh Marano said in a statement.

Archaeologists surveyed the site in 2021 and found five cannons several hundred yards from the main wreck site, officials said. The guns were determined to be those thrown overboard when HMS Tyger first ran aground, leading archaeologists to confirm the wreck was, in fact, the remains of HMS Tyger.

After the ship wrecked, about 300 crew members were marooned for more than two months on what today is Garden Key. They erected fortifications on the island more than a century before the establishment of Fort Jefferson , which remains on the island today as a historical site.

Stranded survivors built seagoing vessels from salvaged pieces of the wrecked HMS Tyger and then burned the rest of the ship to prevent its guns from falling into enemy hands. The survivors used their makeshift vessels to travel 700 miles (1,125 kilometers) through enemy waters to British-controlled Port Royal, Jamaica.

The remains of HMS Tyger and its related artifacts are the sovereign property of the British government in accordance with international treaties.
