Damage ….. & A Masterly Repair at Suffolk Yacht Harbour

  • By James Tomlinson
  • 22 October, 2019

14th August ‘Talisker 1’ was struck on her mooring.

The gentleman, whose incompetence caused the damage, emailed me to tell me what had happened.  Ten out of ten to him for doing this.  Many would have been thoroughly dishonest and skulked off without saying a word.  A huge huge thanks to him.

I was told in the email that it was cosmetic damage.

I went out to ‘Talisker 1’ early the following morning.

Not cosmetic damage …

And patched with tape immediately to keep the area dry ..

So 4,000 NM in the Atlantic with not a mark and then this ..

Josh Major, Suffolk Yacht Harbour, arranged for the repair to be started early on Friday 17th .. if I could get the boat to the Orwell.

Thursday 16th and a sail round to the Orwell from Orford.

with James Robi & brother David … in the rain!

Haul out SYH early on the 17th

James, Olly, James & Jack look after all the hauling out at SYH.  ‘Talisker 1’ is in very good hands.

On her way to a cradle for work to start

First the damage has to be enlarged .. and the damage ground out

Robert then applies four layers of fibreglass mat

Matting complete & it’s a warm day. No need to wait long for it to dry ..

Preparing the area for the new gelcoat

Gelcoat applied and drying

Painstakingly patient. Robert starts to sand the area with a fine wet & dry ..

Polishing …

Robert has spotted an imperfection … more wet & dry. A master at work.

Photography does not do the repair justice .. repair completed in a day at 1630

It’s all completed quickly due to temperature.  Another time of year and it could have taken several days.  It is the astonishing colour match that is so wonderful.  Robert, who specialises in wooden boats at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, has worked on ‘Talisker 1’ before repairing her P Bracket.  An outstanding shipwright.

Olly & Jack preparing ‘Talisker 1’ for relaunch on the 20th .. I’ve taken advantage of the week end to antifoul with the help of Candy Masters

22nd and all set to sail back to Orford ..

24th August and we can return to Orford

F5 from the west … leaving Felixstowe Harbour

Full power .. in ideal conditions

A constant 8 knots through the water .. with her clean bottom

Orford Church & Castle

My friend Candy Masters back on board her ship ‘Endeavor’ & flying the Stars & Stripes

Woah! So lucky the guy confessed. Nice job. Sorry to hear about the inconvenience though. Cheers from Portugal

Classic Boat Awards 2022

By Eleanor English | 13 Apr 2022

The winners of the Classic Boat Awards 2022 were revealed last night during a champagne reception and ceremony at The Royal Thames Yacht Club, London

The Classic Boat Awards, in association with Classic Marine, was held on Tuesday 12 April 2022 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club, in Knightsbridge, London.

Guests included Royal Thames Vice Commodore Tony Hanna, the Honourable Lady McAlpine, and Jonathan Dyke, Managing Director of title sponsor Classic Marine. Around 130 classic boat owners, designers, builders and other key individuals involved in the classic world travelled from around the British Isles, from across Europe and from both coasts of the USA to join the ceremony.

Now in its 15 th year, The Classic Boat Awards is a widely respected celebration of all that the magazine stands for and, voted for by the readers themselves, is the truest reflection of the classic industry.

The Classic Boater of the Year 2022 was Hal Sisk, who is behind the ongoing project to recreate the entire Dublin Bay 21 fleet, as well as numerous major restorations and builds in the past, including the ground-breaking restoration of the GL Watson-designed gaff cutter Peggy Bawn .

Meanwhile Katie McCabe, who sailed her wooden yacht, Falanda, around Britain solo last year at the age of 14, the youngest person to achieve the feat, was named Young Classic Boater of the Year .

The Gstaad Yacht Club Centenarian of the Year went to Firefly , an Albert Strange yawl that turns 100 this year and has never needed restoration, having been in the same family since the 1930s.

East Coast Harbours

Suffolk Yacht Harbour

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

Suffolk Yacht Harbour is located on the eastern bank of the River Orwell 2.5 Nm north of Harwich and beyond the vast container port of Felixstowe. By road it is off the A14 betwixt Ipswich and Felixstowe

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

Entry to SYH is available at all states of the tide for most yachts: Pick up the red/white safe water buoy at the above coordinates, which marks the southern entrance to the dredged and marked channel to the marina just 0.2 Nm on a heading of 5°. Take care to remain in the channel, particularly when a tide is running across it. The ground either side of the channel dries at low water.

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

On entering the marina visiting yachts should turn to starboard and a vacant berth may then be found on the nearest pontoons, rafting if necessary. Visitors’ berths may be booked in advance by phoning the berthing office, particularly in high season. Alternatively make contact with the harbourmaster upon arrival.

Suffolk Yacht Harbour Website >>>

Facilities at Suffolk Yacht Harbour:

  • Pontoon berths for 550 yachts & swinging moorings in the river
  • Visitors pontoon berths
  • Slipway and crane or boat hoist
  • Workshop repairs and rigging Haven Ports Yacht Club is located in the old lightship afloat in the marina. Visitors are made welcome in the atmospheric bar offering snacks and meals in the saloon or on deck in summer.

Suffolk Yacht Harbour is a good all weather first port of call for yachts visiting the area, including visitors from Holland, Belgium and France. It is also a good stepping off point for those making an overnight passage to Ostend and other harbours on the European side. The marina is set in rolling Suffolk countryside. Apart from the Ship Inn which is about a mile up the lane, there aren’t any facilities or supermarkets within walking distance but the marina has a small general store on site. Navigable distances from Suffolk Yacht Harbour:

  • Ipswich 7 Nm
  • Harwich 2.5 Nm
  • Brightlingsea 29 Nm

Suffolk Yacht Harbour Celebrates 20 Years of Classic Yacht Racing

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

Suffolk Yacht Harbour (SYH) welcomed 50 classic sailing and motor yachts to its annual Classic Regatta in June this year. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the regatta delivered its popular mix of quality racing and a lively social scene ashore.

Entries this year included sailors who have competed in all 20 of the SYH Classic Regattas to date, to new yachts and owners on their first outing at the event.

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

Suffolk Yacht Harbour Managing Director Jonathan Dyke said, “This year was undoubtedly the best regatta yet. The weather was superb, and the race management delivered fantastic racing for all three classes. It was wonderful to see such a variety of beautifully maintained classic sail and motor yachts racing and socialising together, proving the classic yachting scene on the east coast is very much thriving.”

The sailing yacht fleet comprised a wide range of yachts from gaffers to Spirit of Tradition, International One Designs, and Stellas. The oldest yacht entered was 1898 gaff cutter and Dunkirk Little Ship Cachalot, 123 years older than the newest yacht in the fleet; the Spirit 30 Lady Elena , which launched in 2021.

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

The three-race series for the Fast, Slow and Stella classes saw a complete range of conditions from full sunshine, 18+ knots and very choppy seas in Race 1, to 11 knots and strong tides in Race 3.

Jonathan added, “With such a variety of yachts and a shifting forecast the trophies were all to play for. Day 1 saw the larger, heavier yachts do well in the stronger winds and bigger seas, but the lighter yachts with long overhangs had their day in less breeze on Day 2. It made for exciting racing and a fantastic spectacle on the water.”

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

In between the sailing yacht races on Saturday, 13 motorboats took to the stage in a Parade of Power and put on a show for their sailing counterparts. Amongst the two classes of motorboats were eight Fairey Marine boats, a WG McBryde designed twin screw motor yacht named Blade, and a 1937 Gibbs of Teddington motorboat called Ryegate .

After a fantastic day on the water on Saturday, the fleet headed back to SYH for live music, complementary cold beers, and wood-fired oven pizzas. As the sun went down over the marina, yacht owners, crew and guests shared racing stories, tales of refits and renovations, and a shared appreciation for their classic yachts.

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

After Race 3 on Sunday, the winners were revealed at prize giving. The regatta’s three race series and first in the Fast Class was Mark Wincer in his International One Design Whisper .

Mark commented, “It was another truly memorable regatta. Great courses and faultless organisation and management. Brilliant!”

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

The Slow Class was won by the 1920 Alfred Mylne yawl Gudgeon and the Stella Class was won by Andrew Gilmour in Timoa . Enderlein Sloop Thistle took home the Saffir Concours d’Elegance trophy, the Spirit Yachts “in need of a stiff drink” prize was awarded to Bonaventure , and the Stella of the Year trophy was won by Charles Dearlove in Persephone.

In the motorboats, the Classic Marine Fast Motorboat of the Year was won by Lewis Culf in Fairey Huntsman 28 Seaspray (hull number 606), and Classic Marine Slow Motorboat of the Year went to 1919 Thornycroft designed Morn . The Fairey Marine Plate went to James Johnson in Speardancer for making a 300-mile round trip to the regatta, and the French Marine Motorboat trophy was awarded to Ryegate .

josh major suffolk yacht harbour

The motorboat programme was organised by SYH boatyard services director Joshua Major, who said, “I think most classic boat owners would agree they have taken on a labour of love, but to have a gathering of such beautifully restored and maintained boats, all with passionate owners behind the wheel, was a special moment.”

Bow thruster installation recommendations please

Can anyone recommend someone to install a bow thruster in the Ipswich area? I can do the electrics but I need someone reliable to install the tunnel and fit the thruster. My boat, a Bavaria 40 Ocean, is still in the water at Ipswich Haven and I'm planning to lift out there but would consider lifting out at another yard if that was the best place to get the job done. Any suggestions appreciated. Steve.

Get a quote from Shotley, they fit a lot of thrusters.

I'll declare an interest before I start, as a shareholder and director of Suffolk Yacht Harbour Ltd. Last year the team at SYH installed a bow thruster for us on Wild Thyme, tunnel done by the SYH yard, electrics by the late great John Gill (sadly his funeral later today) but henceforth by Ollie of Se[apower Marine electronics and natty stainless work by Mr Stainless, all coordinated by Yard Manager Josh Major. We're certainly happy with the result, which looks like it was part of the boat's design. We went for eyebrows to fair in the tunnel, rather than the more expensive faired recess option, but have not seen a measurable fall off in sailing speed, but we don't race nowadays. If you want a price for the job, get in touch with Josh Major at SYH, specifying which thruster you want and being clear about which jobs you want to do yourself. I don't think John's passing has been mentioned on these pages. Not unexpected since his diagnosis around 12 months ago but, nonetheless a great loss, not only to the profession of marine electricians but as one of the great characters of our East Coast - he will be sorely missed by many. Peter.

wingdiver

We had our thruster supplied and fitted in a bew tunnel by Foxs and they did a great job. We did the rest of the fit as we opted for a hydraulic one (having the option of a power take off from the gearbox) with a bit of help from Pirtek. It goes wothoput saying but make sure the people you choose know exactly what they are doing - resealing, creating proper 'eyebrows' to remove drag, commissioning everything and have loads of experience. Foxs also have decent lift hoists and all the other trades and supplies on site should you need them during the installation.

Andromeda9866

Hi I am based in Ipwitch on the haven side there are a few people in the yard that can do this work for you ask around if you would like I am on our boat most weekends we are near the fairline sheds Princess 330 pop round and I can give you anew names for you to discuss this work with

I'm also in Ipswich Haven. We used to have a DuFour 455, the first Mariadz, and Steve Pike at Watercraft UK fitted this for us and we were very pleased with it. We have also had work done by Terry Clarke who is excellent. Both of them are adjacent to the fairline sheds.

Fox's did mine last year, a first class job. They did all the work, bowthruster, electrics, new battery, changed windlass cabling so it ran from same battery. You are welcome to inspect if our availability coincided, boat is in Fox's. Andrew
