After a day of practice, the Smirnoff European Championships start in earnest at St Annes on Sunday when 150 pilots take to the sand for a week of competition. Coinciding with neap tides, there will be a mile of open beach. Spring tides this week should leave the sand moist but compact and, importantly, flat

ideal conditions, provided, of course, the wind blows. The world champion, Jean-Phillippe Krischer, who sails for the United States but is based in France, competes in the smaller class V. Mark White, the champion from Bristol, beat him at last year's Europeans. However, there are some very fast Britons moving up the ranks. White came fifth in this year's British Championship, which went to Bryan Norman from Fylde, the host club. Fylde also provides the bulk of the British team and local knowledge is always invaluable.

How to get there: Fylde International Sand Yacht Club, Clifton Drive, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, is three miles south of Blackpool (Tel: 0253-722584). The championship runs until Friday and racing starts at 10am each day.

Fylde ACU British Sand Masters Returns to St Annes for 2023

The Fylde ACU British Sand Masters will be returning to St Annes North Beach on Saturday/Sunday 29/30 July 2023 for another thrilling, admission-free weekend of racing.

After last year’s spectacular success, the Sand Masters 2023 will be extended to a two-day event, with the support event on Saturday 29 July and the main racing on Sunday 30 July. A new addition for 2023 is a funfair offering wholesome fun for all the family.

Presented by Cheshire Grasstrack Club and supported by Fylde Council, the free admission events will see solo bikes, sidecars and quad bikes racing in a series of contests from 12.30pm each day on a purpose-built oval track north of the North Beach area.

Cllr Michael Sayward, Chairman of Fylde Council’s Tourism and Leisure Committee, said: “We are delighted to welcome back the Fylde ACU British Sand Masters competition this year. The previous event was a great day out for residents and visitors, and with this year’s tournament expanding to a second day, there’s even more opportunity to watch some of the most talented riders in the country compete. We are fortunate that the beaches of St Annes allow us to host special events such as these while still allowing ample room for people to stroll and enjoy our beautiful coastline.”

All competitors must be licensed via the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU), the governing body of British Motorcycle Sport, and the event will be marshalled by the members of the Cheshire Grasstrack Club.

To ensure safety and minimise disruption to the local community, the track perimeter will be fenced with heavy duty plastic mesh, with additional safety rope and post fencing, and all machines will be examined to ensure compliance with ACU handbook regulations, which states sound must not exceed 81db. The track will be carefully dismantled following the event to ensure no trace remains.

Attendees will be able to enjoy refreshments at the food and drinks court adjacent to the track area, where stalls from trade interests and sponsors will also be available along with the funfair.

The first race each day will begin at 12.30pm. Admission is free to the public, though donations are welcomed and would be greatly appreciated.

Visit the Cheshire Grasstrack Club Facebook page for more details: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100054292429377

Sand Yachting Set To Return at St Annes

St Annes Beach situated in England was considered to be the spiritual home of the sport-sand yachting. But due to the unfortunate death of Carole Cruz who was hit by a sand yacht in the year 2002 at the beach, sand yachting was banned in this Lancashire beach.

However, the authorities are planning to remove the ban on the sport and reintroduce it in the area. On the 18 th and 19 th of October, 2014 test trial of sand yachting is going to be carried out and the sport will make its comeback after around twelve years if the officials of the Flyde Council are happy with all the basic arrangements.

Business leaders and traders belonging to the region are of the opinion that the return of sand yachting will give the necessary boost to not only the Flyde coast but also the tourism industry in Lancashire.

According to John Moxham (member of the St Annes Chamber of Trade) sand yachting’s initial impact would be considerably small but its impact would grow slowly and slowly. He thinks that sand yachting will take sometime to reach its fullest potentials. Moxham hopes that one day sand yachting at St Annes Beach would become an international event and people from all over the world would come to participate in it.

Trax Windsports’s owner- Eddie Sloane said that sand yachting will obviously have a positive impact as young people will get an opportunity to be involved in the sport. But he thinks sand yachting should be made sustainable and safe so that each and every person can get a chance to enjoy the beach and its beauty in the best possible way.

The sand yachting demonstration event that is going to take place in the month of October, 2014 is going to be organized by the York Landyacht Club.
