Feadship And Sinot Yachts Team Up To Create Superyacht Zen

80m of Zen and class

zen superyacht owner

Two traditional Dutch partners, builder Feadship and Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design have teamed up to create an 80m superyacht called Zen.

Henk de Vries of Feadship and Sander Sinot regulary get together and share their experiences on the future of yachting. The concept penned by the two partners puts the emphasis on space. Based on the client feedback, Sinot eliminated the unused deck spaces and developed the owner's area over two decks.

“It is the belief of Henk de Vries that it should be offered to markets in a cost-effective way,” explains Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design. “The yacht incorporates unique design features such as the magnificent inside-out space experience, typical of the Sinot design philosophy.”

The shape is unique for an 80m yacht. The internal volumes are impressive, also the decor.

For illuminating the wide interior, the designer made extraordinary use of glass. For lunch or dinner in the fresh sea air, a panoramic stern lounge is available. An eight meter swimming pool is located on the aft deck, and a large Jacuzzi on the foredeck. 12 guests can be accommodated on board Zen superyacht. There is also space for a 21 member crew.

Jack Ma boards superyacht Zen in Spain

BY APB STAFF on 21 Oct 2021

Founder of Alibaba reportedly in Balearic Islands aboard his 88-metre Feadship

Jack Ma, one of China’s pre-eminent tech billionaires, has been spotted in the Balearic Islands of Spain aboard his 88-metre Feadship superyacht, Zen, according to numerous media reports . A recent Reuters report noted that Ma is said to enjoy spending time in the Balearic Islands . Ma has kept a very low profile for the past year since he gave remarks critical of Chinese financial regulators in October last year. The US$37 billion IPO of Ant Group was put on hold after the comments.

Ma founded Alibaba and is owner of Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post. The Post reported that Ma’s trip was his first overseas journey over the past year. He had previously spent at least one-third of his time traveling overseas. El Pais newspaper reported that Ma was travelling with a group of wealthy Asian businessmen and had flown from Hong Kong last Saturday to Ibiza, where he joined the yacht.

Zen was launched early in 2021, though this is reportedly the first time that Ma has spent time onboard. Dutch superyacht builder Feadship does not give out information about Zen due to contractual obligation, but according to Superyacht Times , Zen features exterior design and naval architecture by De Voogt Naval Architects and interiors by Nauta Yachts and FM Architettura.

The yacht can host up to 16 guests with accommodation for up to 25 crew, including the captain.

Satori superyacht running

Satori: Heesen’s new, very zen superyacht

The secret to the success of a semi-custom series lies in having an attractive design that appeals to a wide range of clients, and ensuring construction to high standards for an attractive price. Heesen has excelled at this, so the launch of Satori , the first of its new 50 Metre Series design, should make us all sit up and pay attention.

The starting point for any new design is the hull, and Heesen engaged renowned naval architects Van Oossanen & Associates (VOA) for the task.

The result of its studies is a hard-chine hull form with a fine entry. Hull lines were optimised with a satisfactory reduction in resistance, and thus in required engine power. Propulsion efficiency was maximised with optimum-sized propellers and well-shaped shaft appendages. It was certainly a good start in life for a new semi-custom series.

As for her looks, Satori is overtly part of the Heesen family with sporty lines that combine the exuberance of the 37 Metre Series with the decorum that one might expect from a larger yacht. Frank Laupman, from Omega Architects was responsible for this, and his triumph was in combining these good looks with a range of spacious deck areas. He was helped in this endeavour by the highly practical requirement to keep the yacht’s tonnage beneath 500GT.

Satori’s Californian owner had already put his name against the second yacht in the 50 metre series, but jumped at the opportunity to shave a year off the construction time when the owner of the first project pulled out.

For the interior he approached Paris-based designer Rémi Tessier who is renowned for his ‘Pure Design’, where every line, every detail and every aspect is considered, balanced and perfectly executed. On Satori this is seen, for instance, in the sitting area on the main deck aft, which is set out with geometric precision. An open ‘U’ of sofas, with handy tables filling the corners, has two perfectly finished high gloss teak-topped tables at its centre, and a pair of classic, stainless-steel and leather easy chairs at its open end.

A similar atmosphere has been achieved just above on the bridge deck. Here, the circular area of the aft portion of the deckhouse, enclosed by glass doors and windows that give exceptional exterior visibility, is made into an observation lounge, at the centre of which three curved, white leather-covered settees are mounted on a round track.

In principle, the layout of the interior is conventional, with saloons at the aft of the main and bridge decks, and the master cabin set forward of a lobby and galley that occupy the centre of the main deck. On the lower deck is a stern garage that connects to the engine room, four guest cabins and crew quarters in the bow. A standard layout, certainly, but the interior itself is far from mundane. Although there is a main entrance from the port side-deck, most visitors will enter from the main deck aft between curtains woven from Mongolian horsehair and linen and threaded with a stainless steel wire – a fitting introduction to the sophisticated design elements found in Satori’s interior.

From the doors, the spectacular vista extends through a small entrance lobby furnished with a bar of mirror-like stainless steel, topped with backlit white onyx, that serves the aft deck, while the ceiling and walls are clad in rich, highly-polished okavango wood. Beyond is a circular dining room and the saloon. The clean lines of the main saloon are simple, yet at the same time highly sophisticated. Unusually, a mirror occupies the forward bulkhead, and this not only creates the impression of longer sight lines, but also conceals a television screen that, at the press of a remote control, can be viewed through the mirror.

This decorative style and its sumptuous materials flow throughout the yacht, creating a cool, calm and chic atmosphere. The master cabin, forward of the side entrance lobby, is entered through an office that features a white leather sofa and dressing table, while, in the bedroom, a carpet of fine woven leather surrounds the bed. In the en suite, white stone forms the angular counter and bath, and also clads the shower and floor. The four guest cabins – two large full beam VIP cabins and two smaller twins of equal luxury – open off a lower deck lobby lit with a luminous slab of backlit onyx.

Galley, pantries and the laundry – key service elements – are well sized and well positioned, while crew are able to appear at the necessary points in the guest areas with drinks and food as if by magic, using their own staircase that connects pantries on the main and bridge decks.

Technically speaking, while the yacht houses top quality equipment, all of it is tried and tested rather than ultra-modern, but as yet unproven.

Perhaps the only cutting-edge element of the yacht is its lighting, an important feature of Tessier’s design. He brought in lighting consultants Voyons Voir to create three different ‘scenes’ for each room that set the required mood using different combinations and varying intensities of light.

Since launch Satori’s sea-keeping and performance have been seen to benefit hugely from Van Oossanen’s hull design. Not only is the yacht perfectly balanced but she is also even better in a seaway than her smaller siblings. Powered by a pair of MTU 2,720kW diesels she has a top speed of 24 knots – making her one of the fastest, if not the fastest, 50 metre yacht afloat.

Her name has its origins in a Buddhist term conveying ‘enlightenment’ – a particularly apt name for this yacht, given to her by an owner who has indeed been enlightened by the whole process of her design and construction.‘Rémi has successfully created the aesthetic I was seeking,’ he comments. ‘A sense of space that not only has a great balance and volume but also great intimacy, an important factor for me.’

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

“The goal was to combine stylistic coherence with extra dimensions,” Rossinavi’s chief operating officer Federico Rossi said in a statement.

To that end, the superstructure was extended to create what is a huge sundeck for a vessel of this size. Spanning more than 1,500 square feet, the deck features an aft area for sunbathing, a shaded central lounge with a bar, and a splashy mini pool at the bow.

Rossinavi Bel1 Custom Superyacht

The sundeck isn’t the only draw outdoors, though. The upper deck provides seafarers with a spot for alfresco dining in all four seasons, with the aft covered by a nifty veranda that protects against the elements.

Heading to the aft, the unconventional deck arrangement creates pockets of space on different levels for specific functional needs. The staggered decks also allow the aft section to be perceived as a single open area, even though there are distinct sections. The main deck cockpit includes a dining area with sliding glass panels for protection against the elements and an outdoor living area. The latter leads to a beach area with foldable platforms and an openable aft hatch. The beach club itself is enclosed because sometimes you need a break from the sun.

Perhaps we should say Bel1 is big on style, space, and smooth sailing.
