Whether you want to plan a full ghost tour or are just in the mood for a good story, these castles, abbeys, forts and more are some of the most ‘haunted’ buildings across the country.

1 | Leap Castle, Co Offaly

Leap Castle in Offaly bills itself as the world’s most haunted castle, with a history that reads like Game of Thrones thanks to decades of bloodshed and tragedy. Many have lost their lives here over the centuries, most notably the tormented souls said to have betrayed the historical owners. You might spot The Red Lady, who has been seen carrying a dagger through the corridors, and two young girls Emily and Charlotte, who play in the hallways and sometimes plummet from the battlements in a grisly replay of Emily’s sudden demise at the age of 11.

Brave guests can hunt for ghosts in The Bloody Chapel and the Murder Hole Room and listen to owner Sean Ryan’s own chilling accounts of ghostly encounters, from hearing chanting within the walls to objects being moved in front of his eyes. Visitors can contact Leap Castle owner Sean Ryan to request a tour, with specific tours running throughout October.

2 | Charles Fort, Co Cork

The White Lady of Kinsale is said to stalk the battlements of Charles Fort in County Cork , the star-shaped military fortress in Kinsale Harbour, where her father, commander Colonel Warrender, killed her husband on their wedding night. Witnesses have since spotted a ghostly woman in a wedding dress wreaking havoc around the fortress. Soldiers have seen her walking through walls and parents stationed at the fort have witnessed her watching their children as they slept. Perhaps the most chilling account is that of a medical officer in 1922 who was dragged from his room and thrown down a stairs by a young robed woman. Watch where you wander.

Tickets to Charles Fort are available online and upon arrival. Adults: €5, kids: €3. Charles Fort offers multiple language guides, as well as a monsters and poltergeist trail for children.

3 | Duckett’s Grove, Co Carlow

Don’t chalk those ghostly apparitions and whispers in your ear as all up to imagination: the eerie ruins of the Duckett’s Grove estate in Carlow has been visited by paranormal investigators who claim to have photographic evidence of the ghost of William Duckett himself, who owned the gothic pile in 1830. But even more notorious is the Duckett Grove banshee, who can be heard shrieking through the ruins along with the voices of former servants in the kitchens. Some have also claimed to have heard the sound of an organ amid the derelict walls, as well as a phantom horse and carriage pulling up outside this once great house.

Much of the ruined house is impassable, but the historic walled garden are still open to the public Friday to Sunday, offering audio guides to thrill-seekers looking to brave the grounds alone, as well as free guided tours in case you need a friendly face along the way. If you need a warm drink to tame your nerves, stop by the café on-site after your trip around the gardens. Despite its occult origins, Duckett's Grove comes alive during the Christmas season by opening its extensive grounds to host events and festive markets.

4 | Belvelly Castle, Co Cork

Legend, and a whole lot of scared visitors, say the 14th century tower house of  Belvelly Castle is home to some downright creepy goings-on. Its roll call of residents include the ghost of a Spanish minstrel thought to have been shipwrecked off the Irish coast, and the faceless ghost of 17th century aristocrat Lady Margaret Hardnett, who was known for her beauty and her capricious nature. Legend tells that when she refused the affections of one suitor Clon Rockenby, he starved the family until Margaret lost her mind and her looks and smashed every mirror in the castle. Her ghost is said to haunt the medieval tower looking for glimpses of herself in mirrors.

The castle has been recently restored by new private owners and can be spotted from its prime location near the Cork Road bridge onto Fota Island .

5 | Loftus Hall, Co Wexford

Considered to be Ireland’s most haunted house, Loftus Hall , on the windswept Hook Peninsula in Wexford, is a gothic edifice that reputedly hosted the devil. Legend has it that in the 1760s a stranger came knocking one stormy night. Owners Charles Tottenham and his wife Anne invited the man inside and apparently, while playing cards, she bent down to retrieve a fallen card and discovered her guest had cloven hooves instead of feet. Upon hearing her screams, the stranger bolted through the roof in a ball of flames. Lady Anne never recovered and is said to haunt the house to this day.

“There isn’t a day at Loftus Hall that I don’t feel that there is something or someone there with me,” says former owner Aidan Quigley, who has since sold the property to buyers at Oakmount, who are converting the currently-closed property into a luxury hotel.

6 | St Michan’s Church, Co Dublin

The humble façade of St Michan's Church in Dublin city belies its storied interior, which has many of its original 9th century features, including the organ on which Baroque composer Handel practised his first performance of Messiah. But it’s the underground crypt that will give you serious chills. Stacks of coffins with limbs protruding make for a spooky sight, along with open coffins containing some of Dublin’s most notorious families. These include 18th century rebels the Sheares brothers, Republican revolutionaries executed in 1798, an 800-year-old crusader, the mummified remains of a 400-year-old nun, and the death mask of Irish revolutionary Wolfe Tone – all of whom are said to whisper in the dark, cold corridors.

Stop by and avail of the fully guided tours of the creepy vaults to see them for yourself.

7 | Hellfire Club, Co Dublin

During the day, this pretty spot on the top of Montpellier Hill in the Dublin Mountains is scattered with hikers and families enjoying picnics on the lawn. But it’s the last place you want to be when the sun goes down – the ruined hunting lodge allegedly comes alive with the ghosts of its residents, who were said to have dabbled in black magic and hedonistic behaviour. Legend says that these ‘hellfire’ members invited the devil in to play cards one night. When they discovered his identity, he set the club alight, leaving it in the ruined state it is today. Devilish goings on have been rife since, apparently, as spooked visitors have reported bad smelling odours, hearing voices and feeling the icy grip of a hand around their necks.

Visitors can view the ruins of the Hellfire Club from numerous walking trails in the Dublin Mountains.

8 | Kilmainham Gaol, Co Dublin

Despite closing in 1924, County Dublin’s Kilmainham Gaol , home to some of the country’s most notorious criminals in the last 200 years, still has the power to chill. It might be Europe’s largest unoccupied prison, but there’s more than a few spectral inhabitants fond of turning on and off the chapel lights and slamming cell doors shut. There’s grisly Dublin history here too, as you’ll learn how many Irish revolutionaries spent their last few days. Stand in their execution sites, visit their cells and see the location of the public hangings that took place at the gaol’s entrance.

The gaol offers 90-minute guided tours every day. Adults: €8, kids €4.

9 | Charleville Castle, Co Offaly

Once derelict and decaying, Offaly's Charleville Castle has been rescued from ruin by volunteers of the Charleville Castle community. They’ll guide you through the once great house and regale you with its chilling past, from stories of the Knights of Templar to that of a little girl called Harriet, the daughter of the third Earl of Charleville, who fell to her death while playing on the stairs in 1861. It’s alleged she now haunts the castle screaming, laughing and singing in the dead of night. Even if you don’t spot Harriet, it’s worth stopping by to see the oldest oak tree in Ireland, located in the estate’s ancient oak woods.

The castle is currently closed for restoration, but visitors can still explore the estate’s forest and grounds.

10 | Ballyheigue Castle, Co Kerry

Now standing as ruins on the grounds of the Ballyheigue Castle Golf Course in Kerry , Ballyheigue Castle was once a grand 18th century mansion until it burned down in 1921. Legend says it remains the home of a local ghost, most notably spotted in 1962 by Captain O’Donnell. While exploring the ruin, O’Donnell took some photos that revealed a ghostly figure holding a sword in one of the castle windows. Further investigation uncovered the tale of a shipwreck, a raid to find hidden treasure and a soldier who was murdered after he intervened to prevent the robbery – the stuff of classic ghost stories.

Visitors looking to experience the castle up close and personal can book a round at the Ballyheigue Castle Golf Course.

11 | Wicklow Gaol, Co Wicklow

Like Dublin’s Kilmainham Gaol, the Victorian-era Wicklow Gaol in the heart of Wicklow town ceased functioning as a prison in 1924, but its door are now open to visitors looking to dive into the gaol’s grisly history. If you head to the prison-turned-museum for a tour, you’ll by led by actor guides explaining the life of its historical prisoners, from participants in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 to inmates awaiting transportation to a new life in Australia. Explore the jail’s original dungeon on a night tour and see for yourself whether it really is one of Ireland’s most haunted buildings.

The gaol offers two different tours, with day tour tickets starting at €9 and the “Gates of Hell” virtual reality tours starting at €13.

Haunted Places in Dublin

As the capital of the Emerald Isle, Dublin has seen many people pass through. A fun fact about Dublin is that its origins go back to the time of the Vikings, meaning it’s seen many tragedies, battles, and hard times. These past events may have been what caused so many haunted places in Dublin.

1. John Kavanagh Pub, “Gravediggers Pub”

john kavanagh haunted pub ireland

Address: 1 Prospect Square, Glasnevin, Dublin, D09 CF72, Ireland

While its official name is the John Kavanagh Pub, locals call it the Gravediggers Pub due to its soul-stirring history. Gravediggers who had worked all day frequented this pub because it was close to a cemetery.

While some consider it one of the best pubs in Dublin , others are a bit wary of entering its doors. There are a few reports of paranormal activity in the bar, especially after hours.

The most frequent visitor is the man in a tweed jacket. He may have been a previous customer, as he’ll enjoy a pint at the bar sometimes before fading away fully quenched. This is a fun tale in addition to the many Irish Halloween traditions the country has.

You can visit the pub on your own or take this Dublin gravedigger ghost tour for more spooky ghost stories and visits around the area.

2. Hellfire Club

haunted house experience ireland

Address: Mountpelier, Co. Dublin, Ireland

Hellfire Club, or Montpelier Hill, is a hunting lodge on the city’s beautiful patch of nature. Dubliners typically arrive here for peaceful walks on the rolling hills and forest trails. The area is tranquil and unsuspecting until you hear the history and origin of its name and why it’s one of the more haunted places in Ireland.

Around 1729, after the hunting lodge owner passed away, a group of young troublemakers started a secret society called the Hellfire Club. It is unclear what they did at this club aside from an explanation of “immoral acts,” and Satan worship.

The most famous tale from this area is about a young man who played a card game with a stranger. A card falls, and as the stranger bends to pick it up, he notices that the stranger’s feet have changed to hooves instead.

While you may not see any hooved creatures, you may experience lurking shadows, moving figures, and a few unfamiliar smells at this haunted place in Dublin. If you’re into this kind of thing, you’ll want to add this to your 7-day Ireland itinerary during your trip.

3. The Shelbourne Hotel

shelbourne hotel

Address: 27 St. Stephen’s Green, D2 Dublin, Ireland

While there are haunted houses in Ireland you can visit, it’s not rare for hotels to be old and have a few dark secrets, and this nearly 200-year-old luxury hotel on Stephen’s Green is no exception.

When looking for places to stay in Dublin , you can spend the night at the Shelbourne Hotel for a night of ghost spotting at one of the most haunted places in Ireland. Guests often report taps spontaneously opening, seeing shadows, and feeling odd presences around them.

The ghost most regularly seen is that of 7-year-old Mary Masters. Unfortunately, Mary’s story is as heartbreaking as it is perplexing. The young girl succumbed to cholera around the late 18th century and can often be heard weeping or giggling in the halls. Some visitors have also reported seeing a girl opening and closing wardrobes.

4. St. Michan’s Church

haunted house experience ireland

Address: Church St, Arran Quay, Dublin 7, Ireland

Many religious places are said to have a few ghosts in their chapels, and St. Michan’s Church, built in 1095, is one of the oldest standing parishes in the city.

Downstairs, there are even a few burial vaults containing coffins, personal items, and perhaps the most chilling—four mummified remains. So, it’s no wonder that visitors often hear whispers and feel the sense of being watched while here. Some visitors have even reported feeling touched by ‘unseen’ hands.

If you love a scare, this is one of the best things to do in Ireland in October .

Check it out, whether you have one day in Dublin or three days visiting Dublin .

5. Bull & Castle

haunted pub ireland bull castle

Address: 5-7 Lord Edward Street, Dublin 8

Another haunted pub in Dublin is this bar and steak house in what was formerly Skinner’s Row—now Christchurch Place.

A well-known Irish poet, James Clarence Mangan , was born here in 1803 and seemed to have difficulty letting go. The poet experienced quite a tumultuous life filled with depression and addiction until his death in 1843 after suffering from cholera.

Perhaps this is why patrons say they often feel a cold sweep and a melancholy feeling over them momentarily when entering this cozy yet eerie pub. You can decide after you visit if it’s one of the more haunted places in Ireland.

6. Kilmainham Gaol

Kilmainham Gaol black and white

Address: Inchicore Rd., Kilmainham, Dublin 8, D08 RK28, Ireland

There’s great debate about what the most haunted place in Ireland is, but Kilmainham Gaol is certainly up there. While this county jail opened in 1796 and closed in 1924, it’s still open to the public as a museum and place for things that go bump in the night.

Life under lock and key is tough, so it’s no wonder that some residents may have tried to lighten the mood with a few pranks. One of these ghostly pranksters happens to be the owner of the disembodied footsteps, running up to workers and then stopping beside them, leaving only a cold chill behind.

Other spirits may not be as kindly elusive, such as the evil presence in the chapel or the spirit in the dungeon. The dungeon spirit is known to hit visitors or pin them against a wall.

  • The Dublin Ghost Bus Tour takes you around the city’s most sinister spots. It features restless souls, tales of mystery, and some of Dublin’s most haunted spots.
  • The Northside Ghost Walk Tour takes you on a walking tour of one of Dublin’s most-haunted districts. You will explore the former Viking enclave and visit the former site of Dublin’s most haunted houses.
  • The guide on the Dublin Darkside Walking Tour provides little-known stories about Dublin’s ghosts, hauntings, murders, and cults. You’ll see landmarks like Dublin Castle and the infamous Hellfire Club.

Haunted Hotels in Ireland

In Ireland, haunted house hunting? Well, the country has a few paranormal accommodations for visitors to tour or visit for the night if you dare.

7. Dobbins Inn Hotel

dobbins inn haunted hotel ireland

Address: 6-8 High St, Antrim St, Carrickfergus BT38 7AF, United Kingdom

Built over 500 years ago, this Inn has more than a few ghost stories as one of the more haunted places in Ireland. It has seen many owners, renovations, and visitors walk through its doors, with some not ready to leave just yet.

As the legend goes, Hugh Dobbins’ wife, Maud, is said to have had an affair with a visiting soldier. Upon finding out about this betrayal, Hugh killed both his wife and her lover in a rage. The pair are said to be roaming the inn until this day.

Some guests claim to have seen Maud walking through the reception area or gently stroking their faces while they sleep. The soldier is also seen walking the halls. In contrast, there also seems to be a benevolent poltergeist who moves pots and pans in the kitchen or throws small objects.

If you love spooky tales, you’ll love staying here during autumn in Ireland .

8. Loftus Hall

Loftus Hall

Address: Hook Head, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland

Loftus Hall is often dubbed the most haunted house in Ireland. First built in 1350, this 63-acre mansion has gone through many owners. It has also been a popular backdrop to many horror movies, TV series, and ghost-hunting programs, and is one of the more famous abandoned places in Ireland.

Its backstory is eerily similar to Hellfire Club’s, featuring a card game and a hooved stranger. However, there is no proof of this story besides word of mouth. Visitors of the hall report seeing apparitions, like that of a young woman, often showing up in photographs.

Ireland’s most haunted house was sold in 2021 and is currently closed. Considering it has been a place people could visit for so many years, it’s possible that the new owners could open it up as a luxury hotel to the public soon.

Haunted Pubs in Ireland

Ireland is well-known for its watering holes. It’s where many people plop down for a pint after a long day, including a few wandering spirits.

9. Grace Neill’s

haunted house experience ireland

Address: 33 High St, Donaghadee, BT21 0AH, United Kingdom

This century-old bar in Donaghadee has one or two spirits eager to make an acquaintance. This pub is the oldest in Northern Ireland, dating to 1611.

A previous owner, Grace Neill’s, loved this bar so much that she never wanted to leave. You can hear her keeping on top of things through sweeping noises, clanging glasses, and moving cups. You may even see the Victorian-dressed owner standing at the downstairs bar or darting past you on the staircase.

While Grace’s dutiful and warm presence can be felt downstairs, upstairs is a different story. The upstairs ghost is known to be unpleasant and cold, and this spirit will often stomp about on the upper level and cause guests to feel uneasy and out of breath.

When you’re done, head to Belfast to explore all the places to visit in Belfast , including the best things to do with kids in Belfast .

10. Kyteler’s Inn

haunted places ireland kyetelers inn

Address: St. Kieran’s St, Gardens, Kilkenny, Ireland

This brick-faced pub and inn has a Medieval theme full of knight’s armor, shields, and proudly blaring Irish music. It’s a great place to visit for a little bit of fun, a pint, and maybe a supernatural experience or two.

The pub is named after Dame Alice Kyteler, nicknamed ‘The Witch of Kilkenny.’ While the dame could escape, her servant Petronella couldn’t and was burned at the stake. Visitors to the pub report strange occurrences that Petronella or the dame herself may have caused.

Some of these happenings include black figures lurking in the background—sometimes caught on camera. Visitors and staff often report a presence in the bar and on the staircase too.

Haunted Castles in Ireland

It’s not uncommon for tourists to stay in castle hotels in Ireland , but many may not know the loaded history some of these structures have. This includes the ancient history of spirits roaming the grounds.

11. Leap Castle

haunted house experience ireland

Address: EIRCODE, R421, Leap, Roscrea, Co. Offaly, Ireland

Leap Castle may possibly be Ireland’s most haunted castle, but that’s up for debate. What’s not up for debate is the number of tragedies experienced on these castle grounds throughout the years and how that may be the cause of so many trapped spirits.

The grounds’ chapel hosts the most activity as it’s where an awful murder and fire occurred. A priest, believed to have been killed by his brother, can be seen roaming the passages. Visitors also report smelling a faint scent of burning rubber.

Over in the main building, there are still many more ghosts roaming the grounds. Beware of the Red Lady, who is seen carrying a dagger around, or the elemental with an inhuman face at one of the most haunted places in Ireland.

The two girls playing in the main hall are perhaps the most tragic of these ghosts. One of the girls, Charlotte, fell to her death from the battlements. She is seen dragging her deformed legs around and, unfortunately, seems stuck in a time loop–falling from the battlements but then disappearing before hitting the ground at the most haunted castle in Ireland.

Feeling brave? You’ll love visiting these haunted castles in Ireland .

12. Ballyseede Castle

ballyseede castle haunted hotel ireland

Address: Tralee, Ballyseede, Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland

This ancient haunted castle in Ireland is in the southwestern county town of Tralee in County Kerry. Its lush green grounds, elegant architecture, and roaming spirits are well-known.

The castle was also known for its impressive rose collection a few centuries back. While that no longer exists on the grounds, guests still report smelling these fragrant buds at certain times of the year.

Another note of the past is that of a previous resident, Hilda Blennerhassett. She can be spotted every year on the 24th of March, walking around the upper floors in her tattered Victorian dress.

Other ghosts are young children on the castle grounds believed to be servants who passed due to the famine. You may spot them on the upper floors, stairs, and bedrooms.

13. Ballygally Castle

haunted house experience ireland

Address: Coast Rd., Ballygally, Larne BT40 2QZ, United Kingdom

Since 1625, this castle has been overlooking the shores of Northern Ireland’s Antrim. Since then, its resident ghost has also been making its presence known to those around it.

This ghost is believed to be that of Lady Isobel Shaw, the wife of Lord Shaw. After finding out she couldn’t bear him a son, he either pushed her to her death or locked her up in the castle tower, resulting in her falling to her death, trying to escape.

Either way, her tragic death causes her to wander the grounds. Guests report her presence as seeing a green haze or smoke and hearing noises.

Haunted Ireland Adventure – 7 Day Tour

Ireland is the realm of legend and mystery – consider the likes of Cu Chulainn, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, and the Tuathau De Danaan who later went underground in the fairy mounds to become “Na Daoine Sidhe” the Good Folk. Leap Castle is considered the most haunted castle in Ireland, and Castle Leslie has its share of poltergeists; by the banks of the Shannon, you may see a “Phuca” or two. It will take a brave soul to venture amid cold drafts, shrieks and bumps in the night!!!

This is a fantastic adventure tour that includes some of Ireland’s most beautiful scenery, culture, and amazing history. Stay at two of Ireland’s most esteemed and luxurious properties, Kinnitty Castle and Castle Leslie .

haunted house experience ireland

Day 1: Birr, Co. Offaly

Arrive Dublin Airport and pick up your rental. Drive to Offaly for your 4-night stay at Kinnitty Castle with a stop en route at Kilkea Castle, built in 1180 and the oldest inhabited Castle in Ireland. Local folklore maintains that the castle is haunted by the ghost of Earl “the Wizard” Gerald and the presence of “evil” symbolized in the famous Evil Eye Stone located there.

Horse-riding and shooting are specialties at Kinnitty Castle, and it is most famous for its long and turbulent history. The castle was destroyed in 1209 and was later rebuilt by the Norman’s in 1213. It’s said to be haunted by the 11th Earl of Kildare.  ( Kinnitty Castle , 4-Nights)

Day 2: Leap Castle

If you dare, you can visit the most haunted castle in Ireland – Leap Castle. Leap Castle certainly is home to many secrets of a dark and mysterious past. Over 400 years ago in what is now known as the “Bloody Chapel” a shocking murder occurred between one brother and his priest brother during high mass.

Another source of evil at Leap Castle is a hidden ubliet (dungeon) located off the bloody chapel. It was a small room with a drop floor. Those who were forgotten within this room suffered unimaginable pain and misery until their death. Around c.1900 workmen who where hired to clean out the ubliet made a hideous discovery, human skeletons laid piled on top of each other.

Because of its extremely bloody history Leap Castle has always had a reputation for being haunted, a reputation so strong local people avoided it at night. Completely gutted by fire, Leap Castle was boarded up and its gates were locked for over 70 years. Locals have described seeing the windows at the top of the castle “light up for a few seconds as if many candles were brought into the room” late at night. The castle laid in ruin for years.

Day 3: Charleville Forest Castle & Killua Castle

Today, visit Charleville Forest Castle, complete with Druid’s Initiation Circle as well as dark, spooky catacombs and a tower that the late Charles Bury, First Earl of Charleville, still walks. Many orbs “ghostly balls of light” have been spotted throughout the castle to remind us all that we are not alone.

Drive north to Westmeath to visit Killua Castle, one of the most romantic ruins in the country. Built in 1780 and later converted to the Gothic style, it was owned by the ancestors of Lawrence of Arabia, who visited it himself. The house was long ago abandoned, but when it was still in use, visitors often complained of things that went bump in the night. A white phantom was said to circle the ruins, and a hideous, evil-eyed figure was often sighted within the walls. This spector was said to be the ghost of an 18th century land steward called Jacky Dalton. A small, cunning man with a “weasel eye” and a strange yellow wig, he cheated his master out of a lot of money, then drank it all and committed suicide by throwing himself in the lake. A recipe for an unquiet spirit…

Day 4: Clonony Castle

Visit Clonony Castle. This great, square ruin of a tower in the middle of Offaly looks creepy enough. It dates back to the 16th century, and has a connection with Anne Boleyn, whose cousins are buried in a cave beneath the castle. The ghost that people see is that of a man, seen standing on top of the tower in old-fashioned dress. His identity remains a mystery, but he is still regularly seen by passing motorists at night, who have described a tall, thin, almost skeletal figure, surrounded by a hazy, luminous light. Most unsettling.

Day 5:  Castle Leslie , Glasson, Co Monaghan

Castle Leslie is set amid 1,000 acres of breathtaking scenery. For over 300 years it has been the family home of the eccentric Leslie family and has over successive generations been host to many celebrities such as Sir John Betjeman, WB Yeats,  Mick Jagger, and Paul McCartney. The Castle was designed in the Scottish Baronial style by Charles Lanyon and W.H. Lynn in 1870 AD for Sir John Leslie, 1st Baronet MP. It is situated on the site of an earlier castle and, therefore, it never had any particular defensive purpose.

The Red Room in this beautiful castle is said to be haunted by Norman Leslie, who was killed during the first world war. Apparently his mother Lady Marjorie was sleeping in this room one night and awoke to see his ghost standing near the foot of her bed, apparently looking through some letters. After a while this apparition of her dead son turned to her, smiled, and then faded away. There have been many other strange happenings reported in this fascinating castle, such as bells ringing of their own accord and strange figures wandering down corridors.

Day 6: Glens of Antrim & Giants Causeway

An hour drive north-east of Castle Leslie you reach the provincial capital of Ulster, Belfast. Head for Carrickfergus and then on to Larne, leave the beaten track and follow the spectacular, uncongested coastal route through villages where time has stood still. Enjoy the breath-taking Nine Glens of Antrim . . . cross the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and marvel at Dunluce Castle, perched dramatically on towering cliffs high above the North Channel. Visit the oldest distillery in the world at Bushmills and end the day at the amazing Giant’s Causeway.

Through the ages,  Dublin 's narrow lanes and cobbled streets have seen Viking violence, the plague, revolutions, and wars. These streets were home to Gothic novelist Bram Stoker, and the city is packed with macabre history, gruesome ghosts, and supernatural characters.

Get creeped out by the most unsettling paranormal experiences at the spookiest sites and the eeriest events in Ireland's capital.

Stop at the eerie St Michan’s Church

This 9th-century church has cold, dark vaults containing the mummified remains of a 400-year-old nun, an 800-year-old crusader, a body with severed hands and feet, and the death mask of Wolfe Tone, a famous Irish revolutionary. Be sure to make time for this unique, historical, and quietly eerie pitstop.

Feel chills down your spine at Malahide Castle

Malahide Castle , set in sprawling grounds, has an 800-year history, taking in battles and bloodshed. Little wonder then that some of the lovelorn and terrifying creatures continue to haunt the hallways and turrets such as Puck the court jester or the Lady in White. Lots of visitors have reported spine-tingling presences as they toured the building.

A shot through an arched stone doorway into the courtyard of a pub where people are gathered

Have some paranormal with your pint at the Brazen Head

Dublin’s oldest pub, the Brazen Head is worthy of a visit even if you're not interested in the ghosts of its customers, Robert Emmet and his executioner. A famous Irish revolutionary who was hanged nearby in 1803, Emmet planned part of his rebellion inside the walls of the pub. He and his hangman often appear after last orders.

Wander the ruins of the infamous Hellfire Club

Dating from the 18th century, and built using stones from an old graveyard, this club for wealthy young gentlemen is considered Ireland’s most-haunted building. The scene of drinking, gambling, debauchery, torture, Satan-worshipping, and even murder, the Hellfire is synonymous with the occult in Ireland. The sheriff of Dublin, Simon Luttrell (linked to alleged serial killer Darkey Kelly) is said to have sold his soul to the devil here. The ruins on Montpelier Hill are well preserved and accessible by car, and the site additionally affords some of the best views of Dublin City and Bay. But, can you handle it in the dark?

A tour group stands in the big hall of a prison building surrounded by doors to individual cells

Tour the unsettling Kilmainham Gaol

A barbaric jail for 130 years from its opening in 1796, Kilmainham Gaol is the site of numerous public hangings as well as the execution by firing squad of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Throughout the restoration in the 1950s, many tales of the paranormal emerged and still to this day people report being pushed by unseen hands while lights turn themselves off and on at will. Learn about Irish history on a thought-provoking guided tour of this eerie prison.

Take a hellish ride on the Ghostbus

Tales from Dublin’s ghastly history abound on this highly entertaining and inventive theatrical Ghostbus Tour , complete with professional actors. Stops include a hidden city cemetery and a medieval vault at Dublin Castle . This tour offer a less-scary toned-down family-friendly version for ages seven to 14.

Experience the horrors of the Black Death on the Gravedigger Ghost Tour

Set in the time of the Black Death, this bus tour starts at the location of an old plague house, a home to people afflicted with the dreaded disease. It takes in Kilmainham Gaol, where you can meet the prisoner with the never-ending sentence, and many other lurid locations include the Gravediggers Pub. Complete with actors and storytellers, the bus itself is a moving house of horrors.

Brave the Haunted History Walking Tour of Dublin

This unique  90-minute walking tour features tales of Darkey Kelly, her connections to the Hellfire Club in the Dublin Mountains, and her gruesome death at the stake. It also visits the cobbled streets where the demonic Dolocher – a convicted prisoner with the appearance of a pig-like wild beast – roamed the streets. This tour finishes in Dublin’s "Hell", an area near Christchurch with an unsavoury history.

Be there and be scared at Dublin's best Halloween events

Time your visit just right for the best spooks and thrills at these only-in-Dublin celebrations of all that's unsettling.

Join the Macnas Halloween Parade

Macnas , a legendary and unique Irish interactive performing arts group, is named after the Irish word meaning joyful abandonment. As masters of storytelling and intrigue, they’ve toured with U2 and done shows with MTV. Based in Galway in the West of Ireland, each year the group brings its family-oriented Halloween Street Parade to Ireland’s capital city.

Celebrate the Gothic at Bram Stoker Festival

Born in Dublin in 1847 and suffering ill-health as a child, this Trinity College graduate gifted the world perhaps the most famous literary horror of all time –  Dracula . Bram Stoker Festival takes place near Halloween each year in venues around Dublin and offers a playful yet Gothic glimpse into the Dublin of Stoker’s time, explores his influences, and sinks its fangs into the supernatural.

Plunge yourself into The Nightmare Realm

Positioned as a horror film that you walk-through, this immersive Halloween event takes you through a maze of rooms and is guaranteed to delve into your deepest nightmares. Go to hell with terrifying zones such as The Butcher Boys and The Church of the Damned.

What to read and watch before you go

Be armed and ready for the very best of Dublin's hair-raising horrors with these books and movies.

Dracula , Bram Stoker:   Set between Transylvania and London, this classic gothic novel was birthed in Dublin and no experience of Dublin’s specters and spirits would be complete without first reading it.

The Cock and Anchor , Sheridan le Fanu: Set in Dublin in the turbulent mid-eighteenth century, this under-rated Gothic novel thriller features young lovers try a daring escape from villains in a haunted house.

The Eclipse (2009): This movie tells an eerie ghost story set in a fictional Irish seaside town when a visiting horror novelist strikes up a relationship with an Irish widower.

The Cured (2017): Somewhat prophetically positioned given the COVID-19 pandemic, this horror movie is set in a post-plague world. The outbreak of a virus has been mainly brought under control, but the sick are kept locked up while the cured are allowed to lead almost normal lives. It was filmed around north inner city Dublin.

A Guide to the Most Haunted Places in Ireland

Charleville Castle in County Offaly is said to be one of the most haunted places in Ireland

Ireland is filled with spooky stories, tales of the macabre and plenty of reported ghost sightings. From Malahide Castle near Dublin to Loftus Hall in County Wexford, here are some of the most haunted spots to visit (if you dare) the next time you take a trip to the Emerald Isle.

Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

Malahide Castle, County Dublin

haunted house experience ireland

Once upon a time, the majestic castle at Malahide operated as a fortress for the surrounding area. With many elements that date back as far as the 12th century, it has weathered many storms, both literal and figurative. Today Malahide Castle is said to be haunted by many spirits – at least five, according to the experts at Haunted Rooms. These include the Baron of Galtrim, said to have died in battle on his wedding day, and Puck, the former castle jester. Not shying away from its dark history, the castle proudly hosts ghost tours at Halloween.

As the execution site of many prominent leaders involved in the Irish rebellion of 1916, Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin is often described as being home to many ghosts. According to lore, previous governors of the gaol and workmen doing repairs have seen lights turned on inexplicably, heard footsteps and felt powerfully strong gusts of wind here. The stories are so plentiful that Hidden Dublin has included the tourist attraction as part of its Gravedigger Ghost Tour.

Charles Fort, County Cork

A star fort at the photogenic Kinsale Harbour, this historic site was designed in the 17th century. The ghost at the Charles Fort is called the White Lady, a daughter of the garrison commander, and she is said to have married a soldier stationed there. The couple stayed at the fort on their wedding night, where it’s said that her husband fell asleep whilst on watch. The following morning, he was shot for his negligence, and the White Lady is said to have jumped from the ramparts to be reunited with her lost love.

Loftus Hall, County Wexford

haunted house experience ireland

Loftus Hall in County Wexford is home to not one but two spectres. Calling itself “the most haunted house in Ireland”, this abandoned building is said to have been haunted by both the devil himself and a young woman who once lived in the house. Rumoured to have once briefly been owned by U2’s Bono (if that’s not horrific enough), it is accompanied by a legend that a mysterious visitor, welcomed into the house one night after a storm, was later revealed to be the devil by the presence of a cloven foot. After his disappearance through the roof, the young lady of the house was driven mad, dying years later in the room to which she was confined.

Charleville Castle, County Offaly

County Offaly’s Charleville Castle is reportedly the home of a ghost named Harriet, a daughter of the castle’s former owner, the third Earl of Charleville. Harriet is said to have died in the building’s main staircase in April 1861. She has been described by those who claim to have witnessed her as a girl in a blue and white dress with curls in her hair. Supposedly she has a habit of singing, laughing and screaming in the night, and her presence has resulted in the castle featuring on several paranormal investigations, including Most Haunted and The Scariest Places on Earth .

The Abbey of the Black Hag, County Limerick

The Abbey of the Black Hag – officially known as St Katherine’s Abbey – is an abandoned 13th-century convent in Limerick, thought by many to be haunted by a former nun. The story goes that the head nun or abbess frightened locals through the use of the dark arts, before being executed as a witch. Her room in the abbey’s south end is now known as the Black Hag’s Cell, and neighbours complain of hearing her screams echo throughout the night.

Grace Neill’s Bar, County Down

haunted house experience ireland

At over 400 years old, Grace Neill’s is Ireland’s oldest licensed pub and is also described as its most haunted. It was established in 1611 and is surprisingly cosy for an apparently haunted public house, still full of antiques. The spirit of the pub’s proprietor from 1842 until 1916, Grace Neill, is said to be constantly felt here, as well as several others from its long history.

Ross Castle, County Meath

Featuring one of the most notorious spectres on this list, Ross Castle in County Meath is a must-visit for those looking for a chilling experience. Home to the Black Baron, the supposed ghost of the bloodthirsty lord Richard Nugent, who terrorised the surrounding area nearly 500 years ago. Also said to stalk the ramparts is the Baron’s daughter, Sabina, who died of a broken heart when her lover drowned in a storm off the coast.

Drumbeg Manor, County Donegal

Drumbeg Manor is allegedly one of the most haunted places in Europe, and a huge number of strange occurrences have been reported within its walls, from apparition sightings to ghostly noises to poltergeist activity. It’s said that the screams of an unknown woman can be heard coming from inside the manor, and that a mysterious man in white wanders the long corridors.

Grand Opera House Belfast, County Antrim

haunted house experience ireland

In 2014, the Grand Opera House in Belfast invited patrons to participate in a “paranormal investigation” to see if its reputation as one of Northern Ireland’s most haunted buildings was justified. The beautiful concert hall, which opened to the public in 1895, has been at the centre of many a ghost story for years. Reported sightings here tell of a figure in a long, dark robe stalking around the stage area, as well as faces appearing in upstairs windows.

Aughrim battlefield, County Galway

Marking one of the bloodiest battles in Irish history, the battlefield at Aughrim is sure to put a chill up your spine. Once running red with blood, the serene fields are said to be haunted by some of the 7,000 soldiers massacred in a single day during the Jacobite rebellion. With their bodies left out to rot for over a year, it’s obvious why some of their spirits can’t find rest. It’s even said that on a quiet night, you can hear howling from one of the soldiers’ dogs, who refused to leave his master’s side even after death took them both.

Coolbawn House, County Wexford

Now laying in ruins, Coolbawn House is said to be the final resting place of a young servant girl caught in a freak accident. With a storm raging outside, the young woman was said to be looking out of a top floor window when lightning suddenly struck, killing her instantly. It’s said it burnt her memory into the stones of the house itself. To this day, on dark nights when the weather takes a turn, it’s said you can see her charred remains walking the ruins.

Irish Experience Tours

10 most haunted places in Ireland to discover

  • The Travellers Guide

haunted house experience ireland

Ireland is a land of ancient mysticism and great legends. You don’t have to wander far to stumble across spiritual forces beyond earthly reasoning. These are the ten most spooky sights in Ireland to discover.

Ireland is a hotbed of supernatural sightings and paranormal activity. Only further hammered home by our love of storytelling and native folklore, there’s nowhere more spooky to explore than Ireland in the autumn and wintertime.

Whether you’re seeking to soak up the atmosphere of an abandoned asylum or want to delve deep into the dark history of one of Ireland’s great houses, you’ve come to the right place. These are the most haunted places in Ireland to discover.

1 . Belvelly Castle, County Cork

haunted house experience ireland

Lady Margaret was a vein beauty courted by many men. She, however, wouldn’t settle. Margaret eventually lost her looks when starved into submission for an entire year by Clon de Courcy.

She finally decided to give in to Courcy, but on seeing her unfavourable appearance after a year of imprisonment, he rejected her, and in a fit of anger she smashed all of her mirrors. Today, she can still be found roaming the halls in search of her lost love and looks.

2. Ballinagarde House, County Limerick

Ballinagarde House was once a house of great significance. Built by John Croker in 1774, the home housed a family, who, due to bankruptcy, was not able to retain its impressive upkeep. Today, it is a shell of its former self.

According to legend, however, a mysterious man on horseback was once welcomed into the home on a dark wintry night for a warm meal and some Irish hospitality. When he fell into a deep slumber, it is said that a servant kindly removed his boots only to find the Devil’s hooves!

3. Charles Fort, County Cork

haunted house experience ireland

Charles Fort is a well preserved seventeenth-century military fort that is haunted by the ghost of The White Lady – a tragic soul who committed suicide on the night of her wedding after the husband was found murdered.

The site, which is open to visitors today as a heritage attraction hosts guided tours and interactive exhibitions, and if you’re lucky you may even spot her ghost.

4. Ballyheighue Castle, County Kerry

Although surrounded today by a golf course, Ballyheighue Castle is, in fact, the home of some of Ireland’s most supernatural sightings. The spooky stories consist that of a lost treasure and a sailor.

In the 18th-century,  Golden Lyon  – a Danish ship – was shipwrecked off the coast of Kerry and with it carried a treasure worth €2 million! In 1962, a collection of photos of Ballyheighue Castle were developed to reveal in the background a sailor wearing 18th-century garb. Other sightings of this sailor and supernatural beings are not common in this area after dark.

5. Coolbawn House, County Wexford

haunted house experience ireland

The derelict shell of Coolbawn House hides a sinister story that may just make it one of the most haunted places in Ireland.

It is said a servant girl was struck by lighting when standing close to a window one fateful evening during the 19th-century when the house was in its heyday. Sighting of her still standing there, staring out at the world pass by, are common for locals and visitors alike.

6. The Hellfire Club, County Dublin

The Hellfire Club is a deserted hunting lodge that was founded by Irish freemasons in 1735. Known as a place of debauchery, animal sacrifice and sex, many disturbing stories are akin to this site.

Much like the tale of Ballinagarde House, a mysterious traveller is said to have been welcomed in on one snowy night in winter, only to be later exposed as the Devil himself. The Hellfire crowd attracts occultists, so steer clear after dark!

7. Cork District Mental Hospital, County Cork

haunted house experience ireland

Cork District Mental Hospital is undoubtedly one of the places to ensure a scare when exploring County Cork. It evolved and grew over time and other names including Our Lady’s Hospital, Eglinton Lunatic Asylum and St. Kevin’s Hospital are synonymous with it.

Following deinstitutionalisation, the asylum closed and transformed into a residential area, but tales of apparitions, disturbing sounds and ungodly atmospheres exist to this day.

8. St. Michan’s Church, County Dublin

On the surface, St. Michan’s Church seems to be commonplace. What you may not know though is that this is one of the most haunted places in Ireland.

In its underground vaults are the Mummies of St. Michan – incredibly preserved corpses that lay for all to see. Whispers and strange disturbances are not uncommon here.

9. Loftus Hall, County Wexford

haunted house experience ireland

Loftus Hall is arguably one of the most haunted places in Ireland. It was open to guests to explore until 2020 when it was put on sale. While its current status is ‘temporarily closed’, the future of Loftus Hall is still yet to be decided.

What we do know is the house is haunted by the ghost of Anne Tottenham, who was left deeply disturbed after hosting a houseguest who she believed to be the devil. Her traumatised spectre can still be seen wandering the halls today.

10. Kilmainham Gaol, County Dublin

Kilmainham Gaol (jail) is one of Dublin’s top attractions. Home to an impressive museum that explores the site’s evolution in Irish history, it must also be noted that Kilmainham Gaol saw such plight, death and decay in its time.

14 men were executed here, not to mention those who died of its poor conditions. Today, you wouldn’t want to be alone at night for fear of the eerie noises, strange whispers and footsteps that seem to follow you.

If you’re interested in experiencing a bespoke tour of some of the most haunted places in Ireland, get in touch today and we can help you map out the trip of a lifetime.

8 Haunted Castles In Ireland That You Can Actually Stay In!

8 Haunted Castles In Ireland That You Can Actually Stay In!

Yes, there are a number of supposedly haunted castles in Ireland where you can spend the night if that’s your thing!

Ireland has proved to be a big attraction over the years for ghost hunters and people fascinated by the supernatural world.

Places like Loftus Hall (the most haunted house in Ireland) and Leap Castle (the most haunted castle in Ireland) attract tourists by the boat-load each year.

However, those in search of a unique experience can take things a step further, by spending a night in a haunted Irish castle.

Haunted castles in Ireland that you can stay in

There are plenty of haunted Irish castles strewn across our island with histories dating back centuries that you can visit during the day.

There are few, however, where you can kick-back for a night. Below, you’ll find 8 castle hotels in Ireland that are supposedly haunted.

1. Kinnitty Castle

castle hotel offaly

Photo via Kinnitty Castle Hotel

You’ll find Kinnitty Castle in the countryside of Birr in County Offaly where it has left past guests feeling a little spooked after a stay in certain rooms.

In fact, this supposedly haunted castle in Ireland attracted the attention of the TV show ‘Most Haunted’, who filmed here back in 2004.

The castle was first built in 1209 but was rebuilt to its current state in 1928. The High Cross and Abbey walls are the only part of the original structure that remains.

It’s believed that several ghosts haunt the castle grounds. The most famous ghost is the Monk of Kinnitty, who has been spotted by both staff and guests alike.

2. Ballyseede Castle

Ballyseede irish castle hotel

If you’re up for a weekend away with the chance sighting of a ghost, a night at this stunning castle outside of Tralee is a must.

The Ballyseede Castle estate dates back to the late 18th century and it has a history that is packed full of legends and stories of spirits.

The castle’s most popular ghost is former resident Hilda Blennerhassett , who is often seen around the upper floors of the castle and main staircase.

Even the current proprietors have encountered a ghost running down the stairs and slamming doors in the middle of the night.

3. Kilkea Castle

Kilkea Castle in Kildare is often referred to as one of the most haunted castles in Ireland, and for good reason, as a stay at this estate can include a ‘special’ night-time supernatural tour.

The guided post-sunset walk takes visitors through the history of the castle, while also offering a chance to spot some of the more well-known Kilkea ghosts.

There are stories of a little girl playing in the hallways and tugging at bedcovers at night and a woman in white who crosses the courtyard and passes through the stone walls.

Note from the editor : I stayed in Kilkea a few years back and it was class. Thankfully, there were no encounters with any ghosts or ghouls…

4. Cabra Castle

Cabra Castle in Cavan was once voted the second scariest hotel in the world. The ghosts of this castle are tied to a forbidden relationship that took place in the 1780s.

A relationship began between the son of the then-owner of the castle and a servant girl. The story goes that when the girl fell pregnant, she was taken from the castle and tragically hung from a bridge.

Guests have reported hearing the spine-tingling sounds of a crying baby in the dead of the night and a strange feeling of a presence in the courtyard.

Note from the editor : I stayed in this one, too, a good while ago – class hotel and, thankfully, no mad experiences.

5. Ross Castle

You have a pretty high chance of encountering the supernatural world at Ross Castle in County Meath, by all accounts .

This 16th-century castle turned B&B, was originally built by the famously cruel, English Lord Richard Nugent. Although his presence has been reported within the grounds, it’s his daughter, Sabina, who most often haunts guests.

It is said that after her lover died in a storm as they rowed across Lake Sheelin, she locked herself in the castle tower and starved to death.

She is often seen throughout the castle with doors heard slamming into the night. You can rent this place through Airbnb here .

6. Markree Castle

Don’t be fooled by the incredibly stunning Markree Castle in Sligo. This beautiful Gothic-style estate has a little girl called Pippa who has spooked guests in the past.

She has been known to play tricks on people by locking them in their rooms, as well as, chatting with other children who come with their family to stay.

However, it is said that she is also open to gifts in exchange for leaving you alone. On a number of occasions, people who brought along a present for Pippa claim to have had a completely ghost-free stay at the castle.

7. Blackwater Castle

Castles boasting 9,000 years+ of history often have a story or two of ghost sightings, and Blackwater Castle in Cork is no different.

It’s believed that this castle is haunted by the spirit of Lady Roche, a brave woman who led the defence of the castle in 1650 until it eventually fell to Lord Broghill.

Lady Roche was kept imprisoned in the castle tower and later was executed. It is said that her restless soul still roams the castle grounds wearing a dark hooded cloak with sightings reported by both guests and employees

8. Ballygally Castle

Ballygally Castle is one of a number of haunted castles in Northern Ireland . You’ll find it perched on the Antrim Coast where it’s said to have a friendly resident ghost.

It is said that Lady Isabella Shaw, the wife of Lord James Shaw, still walks the corridors of the castle at night.

According to legend, the cruel Lord locked her in a room at the top of the castle after she couldn’t produce a male heir.

As she tried to escape, she tragically fell from the tower to her death. Guests hoping to catch a glimpse of her ghost stay in Lady Isabella’s room near the top of the castle.

1. Loftus Hall

This large mansion on the Hook Peninsula is considered Ireland’s most haunted house. The legend goes that a dark stranger was welcomed into the house by the Tottenham family during a terrible storm.

One night while they were playing cards, Anne Tottenham noticed that the man had cloven hoofs. The stranger then shot through the roof in a ball of flames and has continued to haunt the walls ever since.

People go to the house for tours in the hope that they will encounter the devil himself. Learn more about this Irish myth right here .

2. Leap Castle

Leap Castle in County Offaly is considered one of the most haunted in Ireland with a history stained with bloodshed. Many ghosts are said to wander the castle’s corridors and the place has been featured on various TV shows related to paranormal activity.

One of the most well-known parts of the castle is the Bloody Chapel, which is now an eery burnt-out shell.

It is said that one of the O’Carroll sons killed his brother, a priest, during mass and his spirit remains lurking in the stairwell. The estate is privately owned and open for pre-arranged tours.

3. Malahide Castle

This 800-year-old medieval structure is one of the most popular castles in Dublin and it was home to generations of the Talbot family until 1973.

It’s since been sold to the Irish State and is open for visitors. But be warned there is a legend of a murdered jester, Puck, who swore he’d haunt the castle with his last breath.

There have been sightings of the spirit around the grounds, as well as, other past residents from time to time.

Haunted Dublin

This morning, meet your driver guide at the lobby of your hotel. Together, you will explore sites of Dublin that are better reached by car.

Start the day with a tour of Kilmainham Gaol. This building symbolizes the tradition of militant and constitutional nationalism from the rebellion of 1798 to the Irish Civil War. It is considered one of the most haunted places in Ireland. While walking its corridors and seeing the cramped cells can only make you imagine how horrible it would be to get locked up there.

Continue then for a private tour of Glasnevin Cemetery & Museum. Glasnevin, is the famous burial ground where revolutionary leaders like Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Collins and Constance Markievicz are buried, as well as authors, musicians and artists such as Brendan Behan, Christy Brown and Luke Kelly. Opened in 1832, the cemetery at Glasnevin – which features in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses – now stands at 124 acres and is home to over one million graves. The watchtower in the graveyard at Glasnevin was built in the 19th century when grave-robbing was a common practice, with bodies being sold to Dublin’s medical schools for research. Now home to a state-of-the-art museum, the cemetery is said to be haunted by many disturbed souls, most notably that of a Newfoundland dog, said to have starved to death by the headstone of his former master, ship captain John McNeill Boyd.

Ireland's most Haunted Castle

On this day, you will explore the medieval city of Kilkenny. Kilkenny is home not only to the famous renowned Kilkenny Castle and the Irish Medieval Mile but also to one of the most haunted sites in Ireland – the River Nore. Sixteen people drowned in the river during the great flood of 1763. Their souls have haunted the town ever since…

Ballyportry Castle

Leave Kilkenny behind to make your way to County Clare and your stay at Ballyportry Castle. Ballyportry is a Gaelic tower house or castle, built more than 500 years ago. As you walk up to its gate, you will hear the sound of a little stream tumbling over stones, the same sound guests would have heard hundreds of years ago. Some guests say you can hear heavy breathing coming from high up in the castle. Many old houses in Ireland have stories about banshees from the other world that often give warnings to those who care to listen to them. during your stay, you will understand why Ballyportry is different. It has always been a place of music and poetry, light and happy connections with the living and the dead

Have today to explore the Natural beauty of the Burren National Park.

On this day, you will explore Galway city. Numerous landmarks and places of historical significance are scattered throughout the city, and one of its best known is the Long Walk. Built as an extension of the vibrant city quays and situated near the well-known Spanish Arch, The Long Walk has served as a favorite walking destination for three centuries. Immortalized in songs and works of art, an air of romanticism surrounds the area. Stories of the strange and unexplained have also been told about this picturesque promenade, and many locals claim the place is a hotbed of hauntings. For the next 2 nights, you will be staying at Screebe House, where one of the rooms is said to be haunted with the presence of Lady Rachel Dudley.

Experience the wild Atlantic way, as you explore Connemara. Connemara is the area of Western Galway and South Mayo bounded by the Atlantic and Lough Corrib. It is an area beloved by artists and poets, who find magical inspiration in its wide-open bogs and towering cloud-capped mountains. Cottages nestle into hillsides where wild looking sheep with thick fleeces and great curling horns freely graze. The rugged coastline is punctuated with little fishing villages. Connemara translates as ‘Inlets of the Sea’ and the roads along the peninsula’s filigreed coast bear this out as they wind around the small bays and coves of this breath-taking stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. While in Connemara, you will visit an oyster farm and partake in a tour and tasting. A picnic lunch will follow this experience, allowing you to further indulge on the fresh oysters, lite sandwiches, and of course a glass of bubbly! Take the remainder of the afternoon to continue explore Connemara, and perhaps visit the famed Kylemore Abbey. The Abbey served as the backdrop for the plight of the Benedictine Nuns, who were forced out of Belgium during WWI.

Today, you will take in all the nature while you visit Sligo. Sligo is littered with ancient monuments, many of which have yet to be excavated or explored. One of the most predominant sites in Sligo are the many tombs at Carrowmore, an ancient megalithic burial ground of over 50 cairns. On the morning of Samhain, the sunrise pours over the ‘saddle’ of the Ballygawley Mountains, aligned directly with Listoghil Tomb, alighting the interior chamber.

Are These the 9 Most Haunted Places In Ireland?

Are These the 9 Most Haunted Places In Ireland?

Jack Beresford

BY: Jack Beresford July 27, 2021

Ireland's history is steeped in tales of the paranormal and superstition.

Growing up, almost every Irish person was told some kind of ghost story, passed from generation to generation as mythical folklore, forever steeped in unnerving mystery.

There are simply some things in life that cannot be explained by science and while there's no definitive proof that ghosts do exist, certain places have retained a reputation for harbouring spiritual activity.

These are the 9 most haunted places in Ireland - how many would you visit?

9. Wicklow Gaol, County Wicklow

haunted house experience ireland

Built in 1702, Wicklow Gaol has been described by many as "The gates of hell" and with good reason. Thousands upon thousands of prisoners died within its walls during the Great Famine, with the gaol’s inhospitable conditions creating a haven for disease and death. Eventually closed in 1924, the Wicklow Gaol Experience is now a popular tourist attraction . but legend has it that those who died there still roam within the gaol’s walls.

8. Coolbawn House, County Wexford

Built by Francis Bruen for his bride back in the 19 th century, the ruins of this Tudor Revival house are home to the spectre of a servant girl who supposedly haunts it. The story goes that she was fatally struck by lightning while standing close to a window in the upper floor of the house. The blackened figure of her electrified body was seen on several occasions in the property’s panes of glass in the years that followed. Even now, she is said to stalk the ruins.

7. Charles Fort, County Cork

haunted house experience ireland

The tragic tale attached to Charles fort reads like something straight out of Game of Thrones. According to the legend, it is haunted by a ghost known only as The White Lady who was due to be married there but committed suicide after her husband was murdered on the night of their nuptials. In a shocking twist, the story goes that the White Lady’s husband was actually murdered by his bride’s father who also went on to take his own life following his daughter’s death. Sightings of the White Lady have been surprisingly common in the years since.

6. The Hellfire Club, County Dublin

Take a trip up to the Dublin mountains and you may come across a solitary hunting lodge containing dark secrets. Founded by the first Grand Master of the Irish Freemasons, Richard Parsons in 1735, the lodge is said to have been the site of all manner of satanic dark sorcery and black magic. Sex, drinking, debauchery and animal torture were all commonplace in the Hell-Fire Club, with black cats regularly captured and roasted over open fires as part of a ritual sacrifice intended to summon the devil himself to appear before them. Some say his spirit still remains there.

5. Aughrim battlefield, County Galway

haunted house experience ireland

In 1691, the blood ran thick and red across the fields of Aughrim. This was a massacre unlike any before it, as the cold-blooded Williamites lay waste to the Jacobite army in horrifying fashion. Bones were broken, and bodies mutilated. In the wake of the carnage the dead lay strewn across this once-tranquil corner of Irish countryside, bathed in blood. Those same bodies would be left to rot there for more than a year until only the bones remained. Today, it stands as a vast cemetery of sorts, where the haunted screams of those who died can be heard by those that visit.

4. Loftus Hall, County Wexford

This seemingly idyllic country house is also home to a legend steeped in mystery: the curious house guest with the cloven foot. The story goes that a young girl by the name of Anne Tottenham was left traumatised while minding the property after encountering a houseguest she whole-heartedly believed to be the devil. According to the legend, the man mysteriously died after “flying through the roof” of the house. In the wake of his death, Anne locked herself in her bedroom, remaining there until her death in 1775. Today, that same hole remains while Annie said to still wander the halls.

3. Glenullin, County Derry

haunted house experience ireland

In the quiet surrounds of Glenullin, County Derry, there lies a grave unlike any other. Abhartach was no ordinary man. Buried upright and upside down, he is thought to be the world’s first vampire and the likely inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The name Abhartach actually comes from the term  laght-abhartach, meaning “sepulchral monument of the dwarf“. A vicious blood-drinking monster that was short in stature and thought to practice black magic, he was known as the “red blood sucker” among druids. They claimed he could only be killed by a wooden sword and buried head downwards. Today, locals are advised to give this mysterious grave a wide berth, particularly after dark.

2. Cork District Lunatic Asylum

Built in 1798 by noted Irish psychiatrist William Saunders Hallaran, this now-abandoned asylum was not a happy place. Hallaran’s methods were extreme to say the least – he created something called the “Hallaran’s Chair” which rotated hysterical patients at up to 100 revolutions per minute. It rarely had the desired effect. Inmates largely lived out their days in a state of paranoid despair. Today, paranormal investigators claim to have both seen and heard the voices of these tormented souls.

1. The Abbey of the Black Hag, County Limerick

haunted house experience ireland

Take a walk southeast of Shanagolden and you’ll come across a secluded valley and the remains of a medieval convent with a dark story behind it. The convent was once home to the prioress, a lady of the FitzGeralds from Shanid Castle, who supposedly indulged in the black arts and all number of sordid sexual practices there, much to the chagrin of locals.  She died there in an area called Black Hag’s Cell, named after the blackness of her face. She isn’t the only ghost said to haunt the old ruins. The Countess Desmond was supposedly buried alive there, a fact discovered when the appearance of a ghostly figure prompted a closer inspection of her grave. They found her finger bones and had been worn out from clawing at the coffin that sealed her fate. Today her screams can still be heard long into the night.

Wolfe Tone Square, Jervis Street, Dublin 1

A young man was convicted of sheep stealing and Toler had him hanged.

His widow died broken-hearted but not before cursing the man to never rest in death.

Locals say they hear the dragging of chains between Cabra and the graveyard as Toler serves eternal unrest as his punishment.

The 7 Most Haunted Places in Ireland

The Emerald Isle of Ireland is a land that is steeped in myths, legends and magic. It is not at all surprising that Ireland is rife with ghosts and other paranormal entities! Here are some of the most haunted places in Ireland where you will encounter restless souls, inhuman entities and maybe even Satan himself!

Read on for the 7 most haunted places in Ireland:

7 - Malahide Castle

Malahide Castle is set in 250 acres of land in Dublin. It was once a fortress and has also served as a private home for over 800 years. It attracts many tourists because of the interesting mix of architectural styles that are on display, but also because it is home to several of Ireland’s ghosts!

There are many unseen spirits around the castle, but the ‘official’ count sits at a minimum of five resident ghosts. The most well known is the ghostly apparition of Sir Walter Hussey, Lord Galtrim. He was killed in battle on his wedding day of all days in the 15 th century and has been reported wandering the castle at night groaning in pain while clutching the spear wound in his side. He is said to have a broken heart because his intended bride married his rival almost immediately after his death!

Another of the Malahide Castle ghosts that makes a regular appearance is Puck the court jester. Puck apparently fell in love with Lady Elenora Fitzgerald, a woman detained at the castle by Henry VIII for inciting rebellion. Puck was found dead one snowy night having been stabbed in the heart, still wearing his costume. It is said that prior to his death he swore to haunt the castle until such time as a master ruled the castle who had taken a bride from the common people. He also promised not to harm any male Talbot who slept in the castle. The jester’s face often shows up in photos taken in the castle.

The other known ghosts include Lady Maud Plunkett who appears in her wedding gown, chasing her husband – a Lord Chief Justice – through the corridors. There is also The White Lady, a beautiful unknown woman seen on the grounds. There is also a painting of her in the castle. Finally, there is the ghost of Miles Corbet a one-time owner of the castle who was hanged in the grounds.

6 - Carrickfergus Castle

carrickfergus-castle

There are several different ghosts who are said to haunt Carrickfergus Castle, but one of the most well known is ‘Buttoncap’. Buttoncap is the name given to the spirit of a young soldier who would have been stationed at the castle during the 18 th century. He was accused of having an affair with the wife of his Captain’s brother and was executed for it. However, he protests his innocence even to this day and can be heard wailing his protests if you listen closely. He has also been glimpsed on occasion near the castle’s well.

5 - Cork District Lunatic Asylum

cork-district-lunatic-asylum

4 - Kilmainham Gaol

haunted house experience ireland

A large number of the criminals who ended up incarcerated here died on the premises. Perhaps the most notable deaths were the execution of those responsible for the Easter Rising of 1916. A total of 15 co-conspirators, including the seven named on the Proclamation of the Republic, were executed by firing squad. This included James Connolly who faced the firing squad tied to a chair due to his ankle being shattered! A plaque stands in the courtyard commemorating those who faced the firing squad there. Although the Gaol is now a museum, there are still plenty of wardens and prisoners hanging around – albeit dead ones!

Among the ghosts and other phenomena reported at Kilmainham Gaol are unexplained bangs, disembodied voices, phantom footsteps, lights turning themselves on and off and people being pushed by unseen hands. Children often become distressed and refuse to enter the property and visitors report a feeling of being watched. Psychics who have visited the property have mentioned an evil presence confined to the chapel balcony.

3 - The Hell Fire Club

2 - Loftus Hall

1 - Leap Castle

leap-castle

Over the years, many people were imprisoned and executed within the walls of Leap Castle, so it is little wonder that the building is reportedly so haunted! However, it is not the spirits of these prisoners who terrify visitors, but rather an entity is known simply as ‘it’. This is a creature who is said to be about the size of a sheep, with a horrific decaying face. Whenever ‘it’ appears there is usually the accompanying smell of sulphur and decaying flesh. Some have suggested that this is a demon brought into the castle when former resident Mildred Darby dabbled in the occult. She is also said to have awoken an elemental in the castle.

Other spirits and entities said to haunt the castle include shadows wandering the Priest’s House, a burly man pushing a barrel up the stairs, two young girls named Emily and Charlotte and The Red Lady. The Red Lady is seen around the castle holding a dagger which she raises in a somewhat menacing fashion. She is apparently the ghost of a young woman who was raped by the O’Carrolls who owned Leap Castle in the 1500s. She fell pregnant as a result and her baby was killed leading her to commit suicide. Now she is eternally seeking her revenge.
