Former known as: Athos of London

At 62 metres in length, Athos (formerly Athos of London ) is world’s largest and most luxurious privately-owned two-masted schooner. One top of that, she is one of the most innovative sailing yachts built since her launch in 2010. Her proud owner has spared no expense to build his dream, providing her with her opulent luxury and technological delights.

The dining table at the starboard side of the deckhouse accommodates twelve guests. On portside of the deckhouse is a cozy seating area with a coffee table as the main centerpiece. The bar is equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator and ice maker.

Athos’ interior is at least as impressive as her exterior. Below deck she has all possible comforts, such as climate control, a Kaleidescape on-demand audio and video server in all guest cabins and the main saloon, a WiFi network with VSAT broadband and Satellite TV/DVD/CD/Radio/MP3 in all cabins.

The classic, timeless styling, beautiful details and grand furniture create an elegant and comfortable atmosphere on board Athos . Her layout consists of the saloon, galley, the main deck cabin with navigation area, four guest cabins and a master cabin. The engine compartment can be reached directly from the control room. Athos accommodates up to twelve guests and ten crew members to help the guests achieve a relaxed and luxurious sailing experience. To contribute to that experience, she has a wellness area with massage table on board, as well as a cinema with projector and Dolby surround system. The crew members have access to a walk-in fridge and laundry area.

All guest cabins have finishing in a different type of wood, which creates a unique ambiance in every cabin. The matching upholstery has been carefully picked. The two aft cabins (which can be transformed from twin to double beds) have aniegré and maple wood finishing. The two front guest rooms are finished in cherry and pear wood and are both equipped with a double bed and a Pullman. These cabins are also equipped with a couch and a pull-out desk. All guest cabins have adjoining en suite bathrooms.

The master cabin is finished with mahogany and has a kingsize bed, desk, daybed and a couch. The bathroom has a bath, shower/steamroom and his & hers sinks. Adjacent to the master cabin is the private aft deckhouse which is furnished with a secluded sitting area and daybed, as well as a private office. Next to the aft deckhouse is an owners’ cockpit with adjustable table.

The galley and pantry are fully equipped with Miele appliances, including a gimbal oven and hob, steam oven, combi microwave grill/oven, plate and cup warming drawers, an espresso machine, two dishwashers and various other mobile appliances. Everything to ensure the highest culinary standards.

Opposite the galley, is the imposing main salon, including a sitting area by the fireplace and a large ottoman with extendable footrests in the middle.

Designer Andre Hoek from Hoek Design Naval Architects, Holland Jachtbouw and a very dedicated owner worked together on this unique project. This collaboration led to the launch of a number of technical innovations, including a unique hydraulic system that spans more than 30 kilometres of wiring and delivers around 450 kW of power.

This superyacht features an impressive 61.4m mainmast, Reckmann furling systems and Doyle sails. The twin Volvo Penta diesel engines deliver a cruising speed of 12 knots with a maximum of 14 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 11 knots. Furthermore, Athos has dual redundancy for virtually any system, to eliminate single points of failure. She also has a dynamic positioning system, a fully integrated stern anchor, a 5383 aluminium hull and a hydraulically operated centreboard.

Athos is the most technologically advanced classic sailing yacht built to date. She is Bureau Veritas classified and MCA compliant.

Historical:

Athos is one of the most spectacular and innovative sailing yachts to be launched in recent years.

She is the world’s largest privately-owned two-masted schooner and the most technologically sophisticated classic sailing yacht to date.

Athos is the result of the combined efforts of award-winning designer Andre Hoek, renowned Dutch builder Holland Jachtbouw and the yacht’s own highly committed owner who personally oversaw a raft of engineering innovations being introduced to the project.

Zijlmans Jachtbouw – “In 2005 I took him to see the 55m ketch Adèle and he loved the twin deckhouse owner’s privacy concept that Hoek Design pioneered on this yacht. Initially, he felt that Adèle was a little too large for his requirements, which seems ironic now when you consider how the project grew from 44m to 58m by the time HJB joined the team in 2006. As we developed Athos, more space was added for the crew, guests and equipment.”

“The initial brief for a 90kW bowthruster was superseded by a request for a more powerful bowthruster,’ remembers Zijlmans. ‘The amount of power [150kW] was unprecedented and when it became clear that he would have to finance some serious development work, the owner decided to commission a sternthruster at the same time with the same power.”

“Moreover, both thrusters had to be able to be operated simultaneously with both main engines running on a fixed rpm of just 1,500 because he also wanted to have the option to run the complete installation in combination with gearbox-driven generators. This was quite a puzzle to work out and required well over 2,000 engineering hours.”

“By this time, we had prepared a hull construction and layout for a system one fifth of the size so we had to rethink the proposed design, working everything around the entire installation to keep it all concealed,’ says Zijlmans. ‘The pumps on the main engines and generators are huge and the piping needed to transfer and hold the pressure involved in such a vast system power is tremendous.”

Schooner Athos re-delivered by Huisfit following a Successful Conversion

athos huisfit

Before acquiring the 62 m / 203 ft Hoek-designed, Holland Jachtbouw-built Athos (2010), the new owner chartered her for a year. He fell in love with the boat but saw many ways in which she could be optimized to enhance the amenities and user experience. As the project evolved in his mind, so the refit list grew. And as the refit work got underway, so additional opportunities to perfect the outcome presented themselves.

What started as a large refit project soon came to embrace all aspects of the Huisfit proposition: Refit, Rebuild, and Renewal. The stern overhang would be extended and, on deck, cockpit layouts had to be redesigned and a new forward navigation deckhouse had to be added. New booms, new sails and carbon rigging would ensure improved sail management and performance. All systems were to be updated. A considerable amount of the interior was to be replaced or reconfigured and updated.

athos huisfit

Hoek Design was again involved in all naval architecture work to accommodate these changes, the interior styling and layout of the new owner’s cabin, one of the guest cabins, the main salon, the new crew service area and the navigation deckhouse. Peter Mikic Interiors was responsible for the layout and styling of the main deckhouse and for the overall guest interior decoration.

Huisfit’s capability and reputation for quality led to obtaining the project. For the owner, it was a bonus to take Athos back to the location where she was originally built in 2010, now Huisfit’s Amsterdam deep water refit facility.

On deck: from stern forwards

Athos’ stern has been extended by 1.25 meters / 4 feet, a seemingly modest extension. Yet the concave and convex curves of the new section called for exceptional skills in the design and build of the aluminum structure in order to fit perfectly into the aluminum hull. The extension, with a relocated pushpit, provides a new two-meter area for sunbeds behind the owners’ private cockpit.

Baltic 130 My Song

The cockpit itself has been reconfigured for easier access and got extra amenities, including a fridge and ice maker. The interior layout and furnishing of the owners’ deckhouse have been updated. As a finishing touch, the new stern section has been complemented by a fine teak transom.

athos huisfit

The main cockpit and deckhouse, aft of the mainmast, have been extensively modified to provide a true social hub for meeting and greeting, al fresco dining and relaxed leisure activity.

The new cockpit of Athos is wider and longer and can comfortably provide dining for 12 people. There is also informal seating for guests to meet in smaller groups or find a quiet corner to enjoy a read. Coffee tables are flexibly designed in order to adjust to becoming coffee tables or dining tables. A bar with a fridge and icemaker has been installed. Just aft of the main cockpit, re-designed dashboard consoles sit to port and starboard of the ship’s wheel.

The main deckhouse floor has been raised to one level and provides an enhanced outlook. The entire interior, including the nav station, was taken out and a new design installed. The deckhouse looks much larger, the traffic flow is better and the natural light has improved. A new classic-looking bar has been built on the portside and a couch occupies the space of the nav station, while smaller dining tables and casual seating maximize flexibility.

More forward the former crew companionway which gave access to the crew quarters has been replaced by a larger, third deckhouse, styled and crafted in the same style as the other deckhouses.

athos huisfit

This houses a new navigation and secondary steering station and provides additional social space for the crew and access below. At the same time, the new design of the crew deckhouse improved the flow of the engine room ventilation system and reduced the subsequent noise considerably.

Below decks

The owner’s suite has been totally stripped out, re-designed and refitted. An additional porthole was made on either side and therewith wasted space was eliminated to make full use of idle space. There are now two bathrooms in place of one and a new walk-in closet. Hard paneling has been replaced by subtle fabrics and the plank flooring has been carpeted to create a warm and tranquil ambiance.

Just forward of the owner’s suite, a day head has been removed. The space thus obtained has been incorporated into the aft port guest cabin, where a fixed Queen bed and a sofa have been added. Along with the other three guest cabins, the floor has been carpeted and the fielded panels have been upholstered. Everything inside the corridor that connects the guest cabins has been renewed – new walls, new flooring, new carpets, even a new chandelier! The biggest change in this area was the replacement of the original curved staircase to the main deckhouse with a beautifully crafted and space-liberating new stairway.

athos huisfit

From the main deckhouse of Athos, stairs forward previously gave access to a lower salon in an open-plan setting with a showpiece galley. A fireplace was removed and a wall was built between the two areas to create a cozy and intimate media room to starboard. A long bookcase-built cross-ships and luxurious new furniture complete the scene.

The galley to port, behind the new wall, has been custom-rebuilt and all equipment updated for modern haute cuisine practices. A stewardess station has been added meaning that there is more room in the galley for the chef.

In the crew quarters, the laundry has all-new appliances, the crew cabins have new floors and the crew mess enjoys the benefit of new worktops.

Huisfit Completes Refit of 203-Foot ‘Athos’

  • By Yachting Staff
  • December 21, 2022

Huisfit has completed a major refit of the 203-foot Holland Jachtbouw Athos , which has been extended to 208 feet length overall during a conversion that changed the yacht inside and out.

Work on the 2010 build included a stern extension; redesigned cockpit layouts; a new forward navigation deckhouse; new booms, sails and carbon rigging; updated systems; and significant interior renovations.

Hoek Design was involved with all the naval architecture and some of the restyling. Peter Mikic Interiors handled the layout and some of the styling.

The new cockpit is wider and longer, and can accommodate 12 people for dining. The space also includes smaller relaxation areas, and tables that can be adjusted for cocktails or dining.

Another major change is to the owners’ stateroom, which was stripped out and rebuilt. It now has additional portholes, two bathrooms instead of one and a new walk-in closet.

In the guest spaces, changes included removing a fireplace and adding a media room. Crew areas were also updated, with a galley rebuild and new appliances in the crew quarters.

How many people worked on the refit of Athos ? Huisfit says as many as 50 people were regularly employed on the project for more than a year.

The two-masted schooner  Athos  has completed a full-scale refit at Huisfit, the refit branch of Royal Huisman, which included a 1.25 metre extension at the stern and a total rebuild of the interior.

athos yacht owner

The yacht, now measuring 63.2 metres, arrived at the Huisfit facility in Amsterdam in September 2021 and has had up to fifty people working on her at one time during the 14-month project. She was originally launched by Holland Jachtbouw in 2010 with design by Hoek Design.

For the refit, Hoek Design once again stepped in to oversee the naval architecture, interior styling and layout changes of the guest accommodation, main saloon, crew service areas and navigational deckhouse. Meanwhile, Peter Mikic Interiors was responsible for the layout and styling of the main deckhouse and interior decoration.

The extension was a key component of the refit and involved the careful reconstruction of the yacht’s aluminium hull. The additional length has allowed for a completely reconfigured cockpit, with a two-metre sunbed area and a new teak transom.

The main cockpit area has also been enlarged to create a well-appointed space that’s been conceived as the social hub of the yacht. There is seating for up to 12 guests with flexible tables that can function as coffee tables or dining tables. The flow of the area has been improved too, with easier access to amenities – including a new bar with a  fridge and icemaker.

athos yacht owner

Athos ‘ deckhouses have undergone significant changes to the layout and modification. The owner’s deckhouse on the stern has been overhauled with a new configuration and style. The main deckhouse floor has been raised to one level and redesigned with a focus on natural light, with the addition of a classic-looking bar and sofa seating. Further forward, the former crew companionway has been replaced by a larger, third deckhouse that is styled and crafted in the same way as the other two.

This new deckhouse allows space to house a new navigation and secondary steering station, which, in turn,  offers an additional social area for the crew below deck.

In terms of lower deck changes, the owner’s deck has been ripped out and replaced with additional portholes on both bulkheads. In a bid to create a warmer and more inviting ambience, hard panelling has been replaced by soft fabrics and planked wood flooring has been carpeted. The en suite has been divided into two and a walk-in wardrobe has been fitted as well.

Modifications can also be seen in the remaining guest accommodation, with new carpeting and upholstery throughout. A chandelier has been added to the corridor connecting the cabins and the original staircase has been replaced with a new space-saving stairway. By removing a day head, the portside cabin aft has received a new queen berth and sofa seating.

Elsewhere, the yacht has been given a cosy media room and an upgraded galley, which was completely rebuilt with new appliances in line with modern, professional-grade galleys. In the crew quarters, the laundry has all-new appliances, the crew cabins have new floors and the crew mess has enjoyed the benefit of new worktops.

In terms of performance,  Athos  has received new booms, new sails and new carbon rigging to ensure improved sail management and performance. Other enhancements include all-new navigation, alarm and safety systems and new lighting throughout. New audio-visual equipment has been fitted and the yacht’s tender has also been rebuilt, with a second tender added.

Project manager Jeremy “Bear” Wynne from Wynne Projects Ltd. praised the quality of Huisfit’s work. “The multiple modifications have been beautifully done. The attention to detail and finish is excellent. The additions and modifications have not only improved the functionality of the yacht, they have also enhanced the appearance,” he said.

Athos  marks the flagship of Holland Jachtbouw.

Athos will be stand-out superyacht of 2010

Yachting World

  • November 22, 2009

The 203ft schooner Athos may have been delayed in her build at Holland Jachtbouw near Amsterdam but she will be worth waiting for

We were recently able to check progress of the remarkable 62m/203ft two-masted schooner Athos at her builders HJB (Holland Jachtbouw) in Zaandam, near Amsterdam. She is likely to be the stand-out super-sailing yacht launch of next year and although she has been delayed due to changes to her specification, she will certainly be worth waiting for.

The decision to postpone the launch of Athos – she should be sailing by the spring – means HJB have more time to fine tune this complex yacht and to run up all her systems before she leaves HJB’s new build shed. Too often yachts leave their builders prematurely – maybe the big schooner’s delay is a blessing in disguise.

Aesthetically, Athos will be outstanding with long overhangs, a very powerful sailplan with a lot of roach cut into her main and fore sails and a dark blue topside finish which is one of the best we have seen on a yacht. Exquisite deck detailing which, as HJB say, ‘reflects the Golden Age of sailing in the early years of the last century’ will set this schooner apart from many of today’s large sailing yachts.

Designed by Andre Hoek, Athos is fitted with a centreboard to increase draught to almost 9m/30ft and she will displace around 370 tons. She will not only be the biggest two-masted modern schooner in the world but will be equipped with some interesting kit including a dynamic positioning system, twin main engines with gearboxes which also drive powerful shaft generators, an enormously powerful hydraulic system to operate big stern and bow thrusters simultaneously and some interesting mast-track detailing.

The latter has been developed so that Athos can furl both her main and fore, both of which have full-length carbon battens, into her Rondal boom. Fully battening a sail like this is normally only possible with the use batten cars but these can not be used if the sail needs to furled into the boom.

So Athos’s owner has funded research into developing a system that will resist the estimated 750kg of forward thrust delivered by the battens and which under normal circumstances would quickly damage the luff reinforcement and bolt rope when the yacht is fully powered up.

The design team’s search led them to America and the fittings manufacturer Shaefer  Marine who some years ago developed a mast track extrusion for smaller yachts which articulates on a hinge on the trailing edge of the mast and incorporates a track for the bolt rope and a ‘seat’ for the forward end of the battens. See the picture below of a pattern of the extrusion.

Because the entire track articulates, the battens ends and luff bolt rope move as one as the sail is trimmed and the bolt rope is effectively protected by the batten ‘seats’ designed into the solid aluminium extrusion. When the sail is furled onto the in-boom mandrel the bolt-rope and battens simply slide down and off the lower end of the extrusion and onto the boom. Clever stuff!

It will be on trial in the early summer of next year but a prototype system has been in use for more than a year aboard the 33m/108ft 5in Hoek-designed Shamoun and the results have been promising. The extrusion, incidentally, comes in sections for ease of manufacture and fitting.

Much more roach has been designed into the mainsail than the original sailplans show so the fixed backstay has had to go. Jos Scholten, the project manager who is helping mastermind much of Athos’s build, said that in its place will be twin running backstays so that the vast sail can be gybed and tacked without having to be lowered. The mast height on the main is 60m/197ft and 54m/177ft on the fore. The booms, too, are vast, some of the biggest carbon structures Rondal have manufacturered.

Another big challenge for the Athos team was the decision to fit a dynamic positioning system. Essentially this allows the vessel to be held on station at given GPS coordinates and on a precise heading by linking the stern and bow thrusters and the twin main engine controls via a computer. By sensing the yacht’s movement, one or more of the drives are brought into play and the yacht is kept in position. Designing the electronic ‘brain’ to allocate power to the relevant drive unit has been a time consuming task for the team.

The system avoids the need to use ground tackle, but just in case, Athos is equipped with the normal bower and secondary anchors forward and a stern anchor which is deployed through an automatically opening pocket beneath the counter (see picture).

With the thrusters alone developing some 200hp/150kW apiece Athos needed to deliver a vast amount of hydraulic fluid flow and big PTOs (power take offs) on the front of the two Volvo main engines take care of this.

The owner’s keeness to have a belt and braces arrangement means Athos not only has twin propulsion units, but also twin shaft generators and twin main generators all of which can be divided into port and starboard systems. There is also an emergency generator bringing the total number of generating units to five. Looking along the engine room is a bit like being in a submarine, a complex ‘tube’ crammed with machinery with just about enough headroom for the two engineers to access the systems.

Clearly this has been a technological challenge both above and below decks. But there have been some lighter moments. Jos Scholten told Yachting World that after a year searching for the right door handles – the yacht needs more than 30 pairs – the team was at a loss. Eventually the owner grasped two pieces of modelling clay in both hands and from those shapes bronze handles were cast. These will, of course, be unique and, for the owner at least, the perfect fit!

Toys include a couple of Laser Vago sailing dinghies and three tenders one of which is a lightweight Zodiac flying boat with a wing, the entire rig being driven by a big prop.

Whichever way you look at it this is going to be one impressive yacht and with the innovations she has incorporated all eyes will be on her next spring/summer.

In the January issue of Yachting World were are looking at the current classic schooner scene but Athos will join the growing ranks of spirit of tradition style yachts like Meteor, Windrose of Amsterdam and Borkumriff 1V. The capable Nick Haley will skipper Athos and having run Windrose very successfully for several seasons will be well placed to work this yacht up to her full potential in short order, particularly in view of the extra time being spent in Zaandam enabling de-bugging to progress through the winter.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

Insider Today

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."

Building the cutting edge sailing yacht Athos

The stats are impressive enough. Measuring 62m overall, Athos has a beam of 10.9m and weighs 390 tonnes at half load. Her 1,980 square metre upwind sail area requires the largest carbon rig ever made by Rondal, with a 54m foremast and 61m main.

Holland Jachtbouw (HJB) is building Athos fully to MCA and Bureau Veritas rules, and she is the largest sail yacht ever built in aluminium alloy 5383.

The early decision to use this strong, high modulus material was the first of many premiers for a hugely ambitious project that revolves equally as much around technical sophistication as her imposing size.

‘This project has been a process of continuous development driven by the owner,’ says Zijlmans, production director at HJB. ‘He adores engineering and constantly endeavours to push the needle of efficiency. The owner is not afraid to take risks and while confident that we can pull it off he is also taking his own share of the responsibility, right down to warranty issues.’

Many of the requests have involved installations and systems that were simply unavailable on the market and therefore had to be specially developed. It is clear that the flexibility offered by the World Class Manufacturing principles which HJB follows has proven indispensable for coping with these new developments.

Designer Andre Hoek was on the front line of this evolutionary process from the outset, and worked on the owner’s previous sailing yacht.

‘In 2005 I took him to see the 55m ketch Adèle and he loved the twin deckhouse owner’s privacy concept that Hoek Design pioneered on this yacht. Initially, he felt that Adèle was a little too large for his requirements, which seems ironic now when you consider how the project grew from 44m to 58m by the time HJB joined the team in 2006. As we developed Athos , more space was added for the crew, guests and equipment.’

Within weeks of HJB winning the tender, the owner had added a further four metres to Athos in order to cater for a new positioning for the boom vangs and increase the size of the engine room. He also began to devise the most powerful hydraulic system ever installed in a sail yacht to date; a monumental feat of engineering that would eventually require over 30km of wiring and a great deal of smart thinking.

‘The initial brief for a 90kW bowthruster was superseded by a request for a more powerful bowthruster,’ remembers Zijlmans. ‘The amount of power [150kW] was unprecedented and when it became clear that he would have to finance some serious development work, the owner decided to commission a sternthruster at the same time with the same power.

‘Moreover, both thrusters had to be able to be operated simultaneously with both main engines running on a fixed rpm of just 1,500 because he also wanted to have the option to run the complete installation in combination with gearbox-driven generators. This was quite a puzzle to work out and required well over 2,000 engineering hours.’

With 300kW on the thrusters alone, and taking into account efficiency losses and the hydraulically powered controllable pitch propellers, Athos now had a simultaneous hydraulic power factor in the range of 450kW.

‘By this time, we had prepared a hull construction and layout for a system one fifth of the size so we had to rethink the proposed design, working everything around the entire installation to keep it all concealed,’ says Zijlmans. ‘The pumps on the main engines and generators are huge and the piping needed to transfer and hold the pressure involved in such a vast system power is tremendous.’

Some 80mm in circumference, the pipes and their brackets had to be installed in a way that would be both resilient and sound insulating. While such heavy duty gear may be common in the commercial shipping sector, the restrictions on a luxury yacht where real estate is so precious – and peace and quiet so valued – made this a colossal challenge.

A similar dichotomy between two different maritime worlds can be seen in another of the owner’s innovations, which had been a key feature of the original specification.

Athos has double redundancy of almost every system on the boat, divided into port and starboard systems. Twin main engines drive two propellers, while two 90kW diesel gensets and two shaft generators provide a parallel power supply (add in the emergency generator aft and you have five gensets on a sail yacht). The shaft generators are another relatively common feature in the shipping world that you will not find on many superyachts.

The owner’s requirement for Athos to have dynamic positioning (DP) is also very unusual.

‘As far as we know, this is a first on a sail yacht so we had no reference point,’ says Zijlmans. ‘It is not the DP system itself that is complex, it’s the communication of the signals within the system and how parts of the yacht respond that are the big deal. The installation itself is driven by GPS signals, but the desire to have it hydraulically operated was something altogether new.

‘Finding a solution entailed a great deal of discussion with the yard, the DP installation manufacturer, the hydraulic components and engine controls suppliers, and the naval architects. In addition to being able to enjoy quiet without anchoring up, a secondary benefit is that it will be possible to manoeuvre Athos using a “simple” joystick.’

Athos also features a fully integrated stern anchor. Again, it is not the anchor itself that is revolutionary but the way it is being operated – in this case remotely, with a uniquely devised system that retracts, rotates and pivots the anchor into the hull.

‘The logistics of implementing this pushbutton-controlled installation within the framework and layout of the stern were phenomenal,’ adds Zijlmans.

The arrangement of the main anchors is unique. Normally these are integrated into an aluminium hull and then the area around the anchor opening is clad in stainless steel plates.

Another fascinating feature incorporated into Athos ’ giant hull is her hydraulically operated centreboard, which is seriously complex both from a structural point of view and technically.

From the earliest stage, the yacht’s single rudder and keel centreboard configuration was designed to minimise the wetted surface and enhance performance.

The huge 6m centreboard construction itself was designed in order to offer an unparalleled degree of safety. The bottom two metres are fitted on to the top part with a snap-bolt construction and the board has an indirect connection to the hydrocylinder. Should the board hit something, the mechanism will take the breaking load by deforming or breaking and the cylinder will not be affected.

Walking around the giant hull in a construction hall it is easy to forget that structures of a similar standard of sophistication and an even greater magnitude will soon be sprouting out of the deck.

Rondal has been responsible for building the giant masts, which are made of high modulus carbon fibre in order to minimise weight. Further significant weight savings have been realised by replacing the heavy stainless steel cylinder boomvangs normally found on a yacht of this size with two carbon vangs tailor-made by Navtec. Weight issues were also a key reason to use PBO standing rigging instead of rods. This was created by Smart Rigging, which had to engineer and manufacture the longest cables thus far made for a pleasure vessel.

The records keep on tumbling as we explore Athos ’ spars. Being a Panamax boat she has a very tall sail plan for a schooner. At 61m, the main mast is the longest mast built by Rondal or anyone else in The Netherlands. The 15m fore boom and 23.5m main boom are made of a high strength carbon fibre sandwich construction. Each has an electric sun awning system on both sides and over the full boom length, custom designed by Rondal. Meanwhile, the main boom is the longest built by the company so far, even larger than the boom for Athena .

In terms of its operation, Athos has an entirely pushbutton-operated rig that includes in-boom furling sails, hydraulic boom vangs and captive winches for the sheets and halyards.

‘When we first designed Athos , she was intended to be an ocean-going cruising yacht,’ recalls Hoek. ‘But after the owner started enjoying racing he decided to increase the emphasis on performance.

‘This entailed changing the sail plan and we opted for a new development in the form of furling booms with roached main and foresails. The furling booms are for ease of operation, while the roached main sails enhance performance.’

Here too we have another illustration of how many people had to work closely together to research the solution, including the owner, designers, sailmakers and equipment suppliers.

Eventually, a fully battened sail was developed that furls into a boom with a large roach. To handle the huge batten loads involved, Schaefer Marine designed a special hinged track system on the back of the mast. The entire track rotates and has an outer groove for the batton receptacle and inner groove for the bulk load.

After some fine tuning on the owner’s current yacht the system works well, and now these experiences are set to be translated on to a much bigger scale.

Athos is designed with captive winches so that she can be sailed pushbutton. Because of the yacht’s massive hydraulic capacity, all the winches and other sailing related equipment can be used simultaneously.

‘The most incredible shapes of blocks and stainless steel brackets were required in order to get everything organised,’ says Zijlmans. ‘A load sensor system has also been developed to measure tension in critical lines, with monitors installed and the signals from the rails collated and displayed on screens in the engine room, deckhouse and crew areas.’

Athos has many customised innovations, each of which sound relatively simple but required a separate study

Once completed there will be many more high-tech features to be admired on Athos from the moment one steps aboard, which can be from either side of the yacht via boarding ladders that retract into the platforms or using a bespoke stern platform. In the cooling arena alone, Athos has many customised innovations, each of which sound relatively simple but required a separate study in their own right.

Her on-deck dashboards, for example, are not linked into the overall air-conditioning as normal but cooled locally by ventilators and cooling elements that have been shaped to fit within the exact space and equipment.

A similarly compact and lightweight solution was also developed for the audio-visual stacking area. And the engine room has a very special system that lowers the temperature using outside cooling water and blowers.

Perhaps the greatest testimony to the achievement is that all the systems and solutions detailed here have been completed without impinging on the interior volume of the yacht’s living areas.

A great deal of space has been dedicated to crew as the owner recognises the need to attract the very best people to run such an ultra-advanced vessel. One example is the spacious and comfortable engineer’s accommodation connected to the main switchboard control room.

An amazing amount of storage has also been found for toys, one of which is a Polaris flying tender (a lightweight Zodiac with a hard bottom and wings) that will be garaged in the forepeak. Two other custom tenders will be kept on deck, while there is also storage for two Optimists, two Laser Vago sailing dinghies, and all kinds of other toys in two huge side lockers next to the deckhouses.

Athos is a classic case of how tomorrow’s technology can be integrated in a yacht that visually speaking pays homage to the golden days of yachting past. The vast teak deck may still be partially covered for protection but it is already clear that she is going to look spectacular.

An amazing amount of storage has also been found for toys, one of which is a Polaris flying tender

Come Athos’s launch in spring 2010, however, and aesthetics will not be the primary concern of Captain Nick Haley. No stranger to record-breaking yachts, having spent six years at the helm of Windrose of Amsterdam (also built by HJB), Haley is not underestimating what will be involved in ensuring that the extraordinary technical systems above and below Athos’ waterline actually work in practice.

‘Although Athos ’ critical systems have undergone a detailed development process, we still foresee an extensive commissioning and sea trialling period,’ he says. ‘There will no doubt be some prototype systems that do not work perfectly first time, and possibly some systems that we assume will not give problems end up doing so. Hopefully there will also be systems that we think might give commissioning headaches and yet work trouble-free straight away.’

Haley also believes that the biggest challenge of all will be to extract the full sailing performance from the boat.

‘This process will continue well after the yacht leaves HJB. As the dimensions of and potential loads in the rig are so great it will be an awesome and exciting task.

‘As well as the new track system to handle the roached in-boom furling sails, we are also at the limit of what is possible with running rigging, hardware and winches. In more than one sense we will be setting off on a voyage of discovery.’
