CLASSIC 40M BENETTI Motor yacht for sale

A handsome yacht with a first-class pedigree, CLASSIC 40M BENETTI is a 39.5m (129.5ft) tri-deck motor yacht constructed in steel with aluminium superstructure and delivered by the renowned Italian shipyard in 1970. Her long-standing owner has kept a tight maintenance schedule, ensuring that each winter the yacht is refitted and refurbished as needed.

Exterior design details include a graceful sheer line and bow profile, a classic canoe stern, full walkaround sidedecks on two levels and traditional varnished teak capping rails. Covered companionways on the main deck feature Benetti’s signature sculpted mullions.

The sun deck has L-shaped sofa seating and a huge expanse of sunpads with partial shade from a fixed awning and exercise equipment forward either side of the funnel. There is another large sunpad forward on the bridge deck and steps down to cushioned seats overlooking the foredeck.

She has a spacious bridge deck aft with shaded open-air dining beneath the sun deck overhang and a sun lounge with a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table opposite two sun loungers. There’s a sociable seating area aft that serves as a second open-air dining option with a U-shaped banquette, folding armchairs, a large high-gloss varnished table and a folding canvas bimini.

The main deck aft has four large rattan armchairs around a coffee table in ample shade. Inside, her interior decor is traditional, with finely crafted features. The main deck saloon has a large lounge area aft with L-shaped sofas and two armchairs and forward is the formal dining area with an eight-seat table. The sky lounge has a large sofa facing aft, looking through double doors opening onto the upper aft deck.

Welcoming up to eight guests in four cabins with seven crew, CLASSIC 40M BENETTI offers 267GT of internal volume. The guest accommodation is arranged across two decks. The owner’s suite is forward on the main deck, has an office desk and a 10sqm (108sqft) walk-in wardrobe. The en suite has a bathtub as well as a shower. The other guest cabins are on the lower deck, comprising a full-beam VIP double forward and two twin cabins that each have extra pullman berths.

This twin-screw yacht is powered by twin 624hp Caterpillar diesel engines with low engine hours. Her top speed is 13.7kts and she cruises at 11.5kts with a maximum range of 3,600nm.

Waiting for the launch of Oasis 34 meters for the next few months, we board Oasis 40, the superyacht from which it descends, the progenitor of a new lifestyle. Leading us through the refined environments and the extraordinary open spaces of this yacht, which have made it an equally extraordinary commercial success – 18 have been sold since launch, in just over a year – thinks Désirée Sormani, one of the best pens in the area of ​​Yacht Design.

Defining it as innovative might seem obvious. The new Benetti Oasis 40M is something more: it is a real lifestyle, a new way of experiencing the sea. The first model, named Rebeca by its owner, was presented at the end of September in a private event organized in Portofino and then exhibited in the public eye during the Genoa Boat Show; a model that encompasses all those assets that have contributed to creating the history of the Azimut | Benetti Group: research and development, new stylistic codes, quality, reliability, investments, financial solidity, goals to be achieved. Oasis 40 meters (so called in not even suspicious times compared to what we are experiencing globally) is truly a perfect island of peace, an oasis of well-being with a chic taste that offers a unique contact with the sea. 

• Oasis 40M Benetti

Made in spec, totally in fiberglass, its American owners Mr. & Mrs Casulli immediately liked: their profiles coincided perfectly with what the design team had in mind when they designed this superyacht: a casual couple with a dynamic lifestyle and informal, who loves to explore new destinations and who favors contact with nature. Former offshore world champion, Tim Ciasulli was immediately struck by the project and its huge beach area in direct contact with the sea that characterizes it .

The external lines, elegant and modern, are the work of RWD: the British studio has combined a sporty straight bow to this immense stern that slopes down pieddans l’eau. To magnify the contact with the surrounding nature, he has opened all the decks with large full-height windows that illuminate the interiors with natural light even in the wheelhouse, transforming it into a magical place, where to stop and appreciate the navigation. The more glamorous side of the yacht is, as announced, the stern: a place suitable for conviviality and parties but more simply the perfect place for life in the open air without any physical and visual barrier. Two side wings that can be opened make it possible to expand the total area up to 90 square meters, with a width of up to 11 meters. A large central transformer, which will plunge into the sea up to 1 meter, it facilitates access to the sea and is appreciated by those who practice diving. The heart of this area is a central sunbathing island, a large C-shaped sofa and a 7 square meter swimming pool with 5,500 liters of heatable water and hydromassage; to avoid waste, fresh water is collected, filtered and put back into circulation clean. 

Further convivial areas are the upper deck, where an intimate lounge extends into an outdoor terrace and the sun deck, a further 90 square meter area furnished with a large rectangular dining table for 12 people, a bar and a second Jacuzzi.

Another feature much appreciated by Mr. Ciasulli was the continuity between exterior and interior. From the beach area you enter directly into the huge living room: the style is informal but casual-chic. Nothing is flashy but everything catches the attention, starting from the teak flooring that continues with slats arranged horizontally so as not to change mood with the outside. Benetti has chosen the New York studio Bonetti / KozerskiArchitecture for the interiors. “The search for eclecticism is important to bring news that derive from contamination”, underlines Giovanna Vitelli. “Architects who work in various fields of architecture, from residential to retail to hotels, therefore stimulated to different worlds and experiences: a resource enjoyed by the Oasis project. 

At its debut in the nautical sector, the New York studio introduced new suggestions derived from residential architecture. “At the beginning the customer didn’t exist so we imagined an owner who wanted to experience the boat more freely”, says Enrico Bonetti, “The most difficult thing was to think of a project that didn’t have a place, because it can be anywhere. Before proceeding, we visited other Benettis and noted down what we as laymen did not like: in the nautical world the interiors are crowded with furniture and the materials are constantly changing ”. On the other hand, on Oasis 40M everything is designed to be fluid and linear. The Bonetti / Kozerski studio has chosen an organic design with minimal details, soft colors and materials such as Calacatta or Vagli marble, teak.

The saloon is a unique environment with the aft platform, divided into a living room with two sofas in shades of white and gray arranged in an arch that welcome guests and a dining area; behind the wall an elegant and refined bar cabinet that opens like a casket, revealing a backlit onyx panel. 

From the right side of the saloon, a corridor leads to the owner’s suite of discreet elegance, a full beam room that includes a seating area on the starboard side and a large bed turned towards the stern, off-center to the left; large full-height windows overlook the beauty of the sea while a corridor leads even further forward to the walk-in closets and his and hers bathrooms. Also part of the owner’s area is a multipurpose cabin which on board Rebeca is a gym but can also be an office or an additional cabin. The sleeping area for guests on the lower deck features four double cabins.

The helm station on the upper deck is a truly futuristic position: the classic steering wheel is replaced by a carbon fiber “light bridge console” with a futuristic design developed by Benetti and Seastema; the level of software integration is very high, and is of military origin with ceiling screens and a Besenzoni armchair with controls divided into two small “peninsulas”, as if they were additional armrests. It goes without saying that the performances are excellent: thanks to an efficient hull completed by the vertical bow, Oasis 40M reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 11 knots. Excellent consumption in slow navigation, it consumes just over 100 l / h, with an autonomy greater than that necessary to make an Atlantic crossing. With great satisfaction of the owners attentive to this aspect.

The Benetti Oasis 40m is aptly named, its spectacular aft design creates an aquatic paradise and in doing so completely reimagines what is possible on this size of yacht. But this 134ft, 385GT tri-deck design could equally have been called the Benetti Future, so advanced and game-changing is it in so many key areas. From its stellar helm station to its opulent stateroom this is a yacht designed and destined for greatness.

Make no mistake, the Benetti Oasis concept from British design house RWD is the real deal, a genuine game-changing moment that will alter and advance the way all other yacht builders and designers approach a new concept.

This 385GT 40M model from the Oasis range, there is also a 34M and we will be very surprised if there are not more versions planned, is a next-generation superyacht, a tri-deck that includes every facet of cutting edge nautical thinking and then, as the greats do, goes on to create its own unique moments. 

The vertical prow, upright superstructure, raking lines and metallic finish are everything the modernist could desire. The versatile semi-displacement hull and its 4,000nm range tell you that this is also a very serious vessel for highly discerning owners.

Star Quality

These points alone would move the Oasis into the upper echelons of the 40m market. But it then adds two special features that blow the completion away. First is the namesake Oasis stern design that will surely shape many more Benettis to come. The second is a helm station so special and beyond what anyone has delivered before that we might have to come up with a new name for it. For now, we shall simply call it a glass bridge, and more on that later.

Back to the stern and those shallow tiers of open deck that run down to the waterline. The design turns the rarely successful and always underemployed main deck aft into the perfect sea view terrace, overlooking an infinity pool and hydraulic swim platform. It is a main deck guaranteed to be used and enjoyed. Then the really clever stuff happens.

The flanks of the 40M, sculpted upper works that continue the yacht’s profile, fold out to create one enormous waterside platform, over 33ft (10m) wide. The already vast and wonderful aft deck becomes the OASIS DECK (which Benetti has wisely decided to trademark). 

To create this area, the Benetti designers, pushed the tender garage forward of the engine room, allowing the deck to be dropped as low as possible and create a design that seamlessly connects to the water. 

But with so much space and design priority given to the aft deck, the initial fear is that the interior might suffer. Fully employed, with the flanks folded down, the OASIS DECK does indeed look huge, visually it seems to take up half the yacht, but with the flanks folded up the yacht’s proportions balance out, clearly delivering just as much superstructure and 370GT of internal volume as the best 40M out there.

Interior Accommodation

With so much successful design outside, Benetti has intelligently merged the salon with the aft deck, an arc of huge glass doors opening up the lounge and connecting inside to out. This curved entrance is reflected in a shapely salon design with flowing waves of sofas and. cabinetry that moves forward towards the dining area. To each side, full-height glass ensures the views are incredible, privacy is ensured by beautiful drapes. 

Layout and exact finish across the yacht is able to morph to suit the Owner’s style, but it is good to see Benetti and interior designer Bonetti Kozerski Architects continuing the trend that avoids over-specification and allows the interior to breathe with well-spaced sofas and discreet cabinetry.

Style & Separation 

From the open salon, we move forward to a more ordered Owner’s stateroom. Benetti has created a true suite with three separate areas that give us first the bedroom and lounge, then, accessed through a neat passage, a full-width dressing and then the ensuite in the broad bows. It is a design that will make 60m yacht owners jealous.

The bedroom and lounge area enjoys the broadest part of the hull and feels like a place you will never want or need to leave. The lounge area over to starboard is big enough to be actually used. As opposed to being a place you might sit, this is a place you will stay. There is no option for a balcony, but the suite is bordered by massive sections of glass.

Separating the dressing area makes so much sense, the back of the closets creating the bedroom divide and also delivering privacy and lots and lots of stowage. The ensuite follows the same his’n’hers theme with a dual entrance and room for a deep bath as well as a big shower room. 

Before we leave the stateroom, there is an additional space to starboard, off the cabin’s entrance passage. A big bright glass-lined space intended for use as a gym but equally adept as a private office perhaps.

Guest cabins

Moving aft, the central stairwell leads down to the lower deck guest accommodation or to the upper deck helm and lounge. We will tear ourselves away from the helm for a while longer and head down, where four ensuite guest cabins await. There is plenty of variation on the final layout but the two VIPs and two double cabins here make sense, especially if you opt for convertible twin-to-double berths.

The upper deck skylounge is perhaps the most conventional part of the yacht and none the worse for it. You won't be surprised to learn there is a lot of glass, delivering amazing views from this elevated position. The design allows the Owner to work in what they want, be that a full dining table, lounge seating, a bar and more. Given the upper deck aft is the perfect place to dine, keeping the interior more focused on lounging and a spot of TV watching, makes sense.

Helm Station

And now we come to what might be the star moment of a very special yacht, and that’s saying something given the OASIS DECK.

The often humble helm station has been given more love in recent years. Here it is given a design pedestal that elevates it to greatness. You could say it is a helm station that boldly goes where no helm has gone before. 

Walking onto the bridge from the upper deck is a moment to savour. The first hit comes from the glass that surrounds the helm, full-height and wrapping around the entire forward section. The view is extraordinary, the sense of connection with the sea and sky unmatched. Two massive doors lead out to each raised side deck, an expanse of teak covers the sole.

When you have taken it all in, and that may require some time, your gaze then falls on the central command seat and the pods that wrap around it, the controls falling neatly under the captain’s hands. The design works in two big touchscreens at eye level with three above and leaves a clear line of sight forward. In case you were wondering, the steering wheel is a discreet little thing tucked to port.

With such a display, Benetti has ensured the crew and guests can enjoy the show with seating set respectfully to one side.

Deck lifestyle

We have covered the sensational oasis to the stern, so let’s head to the sun deck which feels every inch the superyacht retreat. With the open aft deck clearly the spot to head to when at anchor during the day, the sundeck is a more private option, perfect when in port, day or night.

The sunvdeck is a superb place to dine, a hardtop covering the central area where the dining table will usually live. With so much space up here, the owner can have whatever layout they like. The example we looked at used the open areas of deck fore and aft of the hardtop for sunbathing, a spa pool and barbecue grill.

Down a level, the upper deck, running seamlessly off the skylounge, adds yet more dining and lounging options, but we can see the foredeck being a favourite retreat with guests. Walk forward along the raised side deck and you come to a very impressive, slightly recessed lounge area, perfect for social gatherings and feeling safely and securely inside the yacht. Another private in-port lounge, it will make for an exciting seat when the yacht is underway.

Value For Money

Value at this length is about possibility and promise. The final price is more about the level of fit-out and the customisation you require. 

This Oasis has huge possibilities whether you are anchored off the Costa Smeralda or voyaging across some far-flung sea. Its decks are fantastic, but the interior is as spacious and stylish as any of its rivals. The promise comes from Benetti’s expertise in delivering a true semi-custom yacht, built to the highest standards and designed by one of the world’s best in RWD.

As a combination, it is a pretty unbeatable one.

Where do you start with the Oasis 40M? It is a star amongst stars, a standout yacht in arguably the strongest ever 40m market we have seen. The Oasis Deck concept is a genuine moment in yacht design, and rightfully steals many headlines, but we also need to celebrate the glass bridge, magnificent Owner’s suite and breathtaking salon. Add in an exterior design that thrills and reassures In equal measure and a properly global 4000nm range and we might well be looking at the ultimate 40m yacht. 

There is, perhaps, one caveat. The Oasis aft deck only really makes sense if you are someone who likes to leave port and anchor up somewhere. In port, it can't and doesn't work. But that's it. So buy the Oasis 40M and make sure you leave port.

Depending on your priorities, the Benetti can either have no rivals or quite a few.

There isn't a yacht this side of 60m, or even 70m, that delivers the same spectacular helm station. And if you want a 40m yacht with a 4000nm range and its own private waterside Oasis there is still only one place to look. 

If you do not need the range, the faster Azimut Grande Trideck offers an excellent beach club and matches the Oasis 40M on interior style. The Sunseeker 42M might do the same, while the Oasis 40M stablemate, the 37M Motopanfilo , is an enthralling vessel, full of class.

If you want to forgo the Oasis deck, and for those who spend a lot of time in port and not at anchor, it really doesn't make sense, then the net widens massively.

But, perhaps, the main competition to the Oasis 40M is logistics. Benetti can only build so many of these enthralling vessels so fans of its design may be forced to look and compromise elsewhere.

Scheduled for a summer 2020 delivery, Italian shipyard Benetti has sold the first Oasis 40M superyacht (hull No. BO101) to an American owner. Craftsmen and engineers at Benetti ‘s Livorno yard area already on it—outfitting the 134-foot, 28-foot-beam and 385-gross-tonnage yacht with fiberglass hull and superstructure with features such as tons of windows to naturally light up the high-ceilinged interiors, a ginormous beach club with fold-out stern platforms that extend the space and an infinity-edge pools just steps from the water.

“I’ve been going fast my whole life,” says the new owner Tim Ciasulli, former World Champion offshore powerboat racer with four World Speed records. “So when it came time to build a yacht, I wanted to collaborate with a shipyard that shared the same core values that my wife and I believe in: integrity, passion and accountability. Plus, we didn’t want (another) job, so it had to be quick, easy and fun.”

Brokered by Merle Wood & Associates in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., this first Oasis 40M yacht is the result of British design firm RWD and Benetti joining creative forces with New York–based Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture. The architecture firm has designed everything from furniture and events to department stores, galleries and hotels (such as Miami’s Shore Club)—and now yachts , in the form of this vessel’s elegant interior.

“On this yacht you experience the sea in an entirely new way,” said RWD’s team principal Adrian Chisnell. “The wide spaces, the hydrotherapy pool and easy access to the water present guests on Oasis 40M with an onboard lifestyle that is both dynamic and relaxing.”

Like many superyacht designs today, the creatives behind the Oasis 40M aimed to remove the differentiators between indoors and out, effectively evoking the feel of a water-borne loft, as explained by Enrico Bonetti, noted architect and partner of Dominic Kozerski in their eponymous firm: “On this yacht, we wanted the settings to have an unprecedented fluidity, which is why identical materials and colors are used for both the interiors and exteriors, giving a sense of apparent informality to what is in fact an extremely elegant and sophisticated yacht.”

First revealed at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival as the Oasis 135 , the yacht offers up five staterooms for a total of 10 travelers, including a main-deck master suite with marble bathroom (and tub!), separate sitting area and a large balcony; two lower-deck VIP staterooms and two twin cabins. A captain’s cabin is off the wheelhouse and four crew cabins are housed forward on the lower deck.

Throughout the yacht, the natural light combined with light-colored leather and rosewood create a casual-chic ambience. The main-deck saloon is a great example of this, and even includes floor-to-ceiling windows that fully open and disappear on three sides, creating a true indoor/outdoor space.

Two MAN V12-1400 engines give the yacht a top speed of 16 knots, cruising speed of 14.5 and a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots.

Benetti Oasis 40M Charter

The Benetti Oasis 40M is quite possibly the finest and most spectacular charter yacht in its class. Put simply, if you like to spend time on deck, dining, lounging or partying, this is the yacht for you.

Then again, with five excellent cabins, two vast and luxurious lounges and, uniquely, a glass helm station you will actually want to spend time in, the Benetti Oasis 40M is a yacht to enjoy and cherish inside and out.

But we have to start on the deck and the incomparable Oasis design that flows down to the water's edge from the main salon. The aft deck lounge looks aft, over the water, with an infinity pool at your feet, leading down to a deep, wide waterside terrace and hydraulic swim platform. 

The Oasis deck is superb but it can be made even better. When at anchor, the two aft deck flanks will fold down to each side, creating, even more, space and spectacle.

But the aft deck design is only part of the Oasis 40M story. Above there is a private upper deck, running off the skylounge, the yacht is topped off with an enormous sundeck with full dining, a bar and an outside galley. When in port, or for a fun ride at sea, a long forward lounge stretches to the bows.

It is easy to focus on the Oasis 40M’s decks, they are like nothing else on the water at this size and make for an unbeatable charter experience, but this yacht’s interior is equally impressive, the mix of inside and outside space and splendour making this yacht such a charter star. The Owner’s stateroom is quite possibly the finest cabin you will find under 50m, with a separate lounge and dressing. Four excellent guest cabins lie on the lower decks with two breathtakingly-designed curvaceous salons on the main and upper decks.

With so much style and luxury on offer, the story of the Oasis 40M could easily end here. Instead, it moves on to the yacht’s performance and ability as a passage-making superyacht. With a 4,000nm range and a smooth, serine displacement hull, this Benetti is also one of the most capable yachts in its class, making it a superb yacht to own as well as charter. 

Beautifully designed and built, with at-anchor stabilization for the smoothest of onboard experiences whether overnighting in a bay or undertaking a longer cruise, the Benetti Oasis 40M is one of the most desirable superyachts on the market. On Board the Benetti Oasis 40M: The Yacht Changer

We were very lucky to be able to ‘jump’ on board before the official presentation of the Benetti Oasis 40M, and see that magnificent creation finally in the water

The wordplay with the phrase ‘the game-changer’ properly describes our opinion about the new Benetti Oasis 40M. As the first yacht of the stunning new 40 meter series, she is going to turn many heads because this yachts simply has so many cool features (like the unmistakable design of the stern) put in the right place.

Benetti is well known for their serial production of semi-custom luxury yachts with sizes up to 45 meters, but this is simply a giant step forward for the Italian builder and this yacht deserves the throne even on the first sight. Invisible decades of experience in developing yachts of similar sizes are sublimed in the Oasis, mixed with fresh and very well done new design features.

Her modern silhouette is ‘upgraded’ with amazing stern dominated by infinity pool (we counted that it could fit ten guests) and openable sides – creating a vast beach club simply ideal for spending time ‘millimetres’ from the sea.

Charter a Benetti Yacht and Elevate Your Croatian Adventure

Benetti Classic 115′ “TO JE TO” is a classic yacht built by the Italian shipyard Benetti. She had an extensive refit in 2012, 2020 and April 2022 and now shines in full splendor, making her an ideal charter yacht. “TO JE TO”, a classic luxury 3-deck yacht has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 ensuite cabins and she can carry up to 5 crew onboard.

The ‘transformer’ on the platform can also carry extra jet ski, be used as a ‘stairway to swimming’ or as a wide gangway when the yacht is moored ‘stern to’. The touch of designers from British studio RWD responsible for the exteriors can be seen on every step further, and for us, a very recognizable signature is the famous Benetti fin made of glass at the end of the side corridors.

This design has a perfect match with interior designers, Benetti chose US-based designers Bonetti/Kozerski who created the atmosphere of a modern villa in the interior that complements with a fresh exterior look.

This is very well understood at the entrance to the teak covered main salon through ‘disappearing’ around the door and this feeling is present through the whole yacht which enjoys generous master cabin on the main deck and four cabins on the lower deck.

There are many more features like an extra jacuzzi on the sundeck or big storage for water toys in the bow which we will describe when we run a proper review.

The Main and Upper Deck have large windows enabling natural light to be used as a design element. This characteristic and the unconventional layout of the spacious interiors are intended to underscore a desire for symbiosis with nature. The three external decks are designed to guarantee a strong sense of continuity between exterior and interior spaces thanks to the prevalent use of pale materials and colours.

What we have also found out is that from engineering and seaworthiness point of view Captain is extremely pleased, with consumption at 12 knots in very low numbers. Featuring an excellent hull efficiency supplemented by a vertical bow, the yacht’s top speed is 18 knots. At 11 knots it consumes just over 100 l/h, with a range greater than the necessary to cross the Atlantic.

What we see as the only real downside of this model is that it is so good that other Benetti yachts could see a stall in the demand, while Oasis 40M will be steaming ahead. With satisfied builder and clients whose number is not less than eleven, just days after the presentation of the first yacht. Maybe that speaks the best about this ‘game-changer’.

New Benetti Oasis 40M launched and named Oreos

Italian shipyard Benetti has sent the latest unit in its Oasis 40M series into the water at its Livorno yard. The 40.8-metre yacht has been christened Oreos , which is a diminutive of a Greek word meaning "nice" or "attractive". 

According to BOATPro , the hull was sold in November 2020 by Spanish brokerage firm Yacht Moments.  

The launch ceremony was held on 12 April and attended by the owners, the shipyard team and Kurt Lehmann of Yacht Moments. The yacht was rolled out of the shed and lowered into the water showing off a modern profile courtesy of RWD , with a glass-fronted aft deck dip pool and unfolding bulwarks that form overwater balconies.

Like all the models in the Oasis 40M series, Oreos has an interior by New York-based studio Bonetti / Kozerski architecture .

The yacht joins ten other Oasis 40M series on the water, including Joy and Phoenix . There are a further 12 units in this series on order or in build.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
