Protecting your investment in your yacht is a necessary part of owning a luxury vessel.  Harsh saltwater conditions require a regular painting and coating treatment to keep your boat sailing on clear waters.

Painting/Maintenance options for your vessel include:

• Marine Paint (single or two-part)
• Gel Coating, Ceramic Coating, Bottom Painting, Varnishing and Carpentry

Prop Speed Painting

Painting and Coating will breathe new life into your vessel. It will prevent damage to the hull and arrest the growth of marine organisms that attach to fiberglass and metal.  Barnacles, algae, seaweed and other marine organisms accumulate on hulls and eventually lead to surface drag, lower performance, decreased speeds, higher fuel costs and even damage to propellors and other underwater mechanics. 

Our painting and coating solutions include modified epoxies, ablative, thin-film, soft and vinyl.  Here is a rundown on the most popular options:

Marine Painting

When determining what paint/coating system is best for your vessel, the decision will come down to three elements: time, level of finish, and budget. 

Traditional one-part paint (alkyd enamel) applies right from the dispenser and evaporates quickly. It has good weatherproofing qualities, and the base can be modified for gloss, hardness, or longevity by using various additives. 

The two-part polyurethanes are formed by mixing components. That mix triggers a chemical reaction that forms the cure surface. When comparing the two processes, the two-part product dries quicker and offers a higher level of finish, a shinier gloss, color retention, hardness, longevity, chemical and abrasion resistance, and overall compound integrity. Consequently, the two-part process costs more and requires more time and labor.

Gelcoat Painting

A gel coat treatment is resin-based on often used on newly manufactured boats. Once applied, it dries into a hard, shell-like casing. Gel coating is designed to be UV protective and resistant to harsh chemicals. Since yacht hulls are often exposed to chemical vapors, this protection proves invaluable. A gel coat finish is durable and, when properly maintained, can last for decades without major repairs.

Ceramic Coating

Marine-grade ceramic coating is highly resistant to wear, scratching, and hull damage. The ceramic layer of protection protects paint and fiberglass. Ceramic coating protects at the molecular level with a comprehensive seal. Contaminants do not penetrate the surface, and any residue can be removed with a pH-neutral cleaner.

Bottom Painting

The bottom of a vessel, usually submerged in saltwater, is vulnerable to sea organisms, including acorn barnacles, zebra mussels, and microscopic bacteria that can cause hull drag, higher fuel costs and repair costs associated with the hull drag.

The correct yacht bottom painting treatment increases the longevity and performance of the vessel. The key ingredients in antifouling bottom paints include copper, biocides, algaecides, Teflon, vinyl, and proprietary two-part bottom coatings that create a hard, slippery biofilm that prevents organisms from attaching the hull.

One of the best ways to keep your props and other underwater metal in working order is by protecting them. One of the best ways is a professional application of Propspeed.

Propspeed uses a super slick “foul release” film that is safe for marine life. It is meant to last at least a year and keep running gear and any other underwater metals free of marine growth and protected against corrosion.

Vessels that sit in the water for extended periods have the greatest need for this type of protection. Our expert technicians can provide a professional application to protect your underwater metal.

Much a luxury car, your yacht boat needs regular detailing and maintenance work to keep it sparkling on the seas and humming along the waves. Detailing and maintenance include exterior boat detailing, washing, boat waxing, buffing, polishing, interior detailing, and monthly systems check.

Buffing & Waxing vs Polishing

There is an ongoing debate on buffing and waxing your yacht versus polishing it. Though similar, the processes are different. In the trade, professionals use polishing compounds, manual polishing, and rotary machines to buff out scratches. Most craftsmen use powerful buffing and polishing tools to remove blemishes, scuffs, oxidation, and other imperfections. Waxing usually follows the buffing process. Polishing a vessel restores the “good as new” finish. Using a high-gloss polish delivers a brilliant shine.

Additional Options

Other options include wet sanding and high-speed buffing to give your vessel a showroom look and erase oxidation stains and minor scratches on fiberglass and Gelcoat surfaces. While we are making the vessel’s exterior shine, we also inspect the vessel from top to bottom.

Famed battleship USS New Jersey floating down Delaware River to Philadelphia for maintenance

A famed battleship floated down the Delaware River on Thursday as the USS New Jersey left its dock in Camden, New Jersey, on its way to the Philadelphia Navy Yard for extensive maintenance work.

The vessel, guided by tugboats, was first headed to the Paulsboro Marine Terminal, where it will be balanced to prepare for dry docking and will then go to the navy yard in six days.

The maintenance work is expected to take about two months to complete, officials said. Three major repair projects are planned, including repainting the ship’s hull, fixing the anti-corrosion system underneath the ship and inspecting through-hull openings.

The battleship, which was built in the 1940s in Philadelphia, served for about 50 years before its retirement in February 1991. It has been a floating museum since 2001. The ship was built at the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and was launched there on Dec. 7, 1942, the first anniversary of the Japanese air attack on Pearl Harbor .

The ship is the most decorated battleship in Navy history, earning distinction in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and conflicts in the Middle East, according to its website . The ship steamed more miles, fought in more battles and fired more shells in combat than any other battleship.

Thursday's ceremony was attended by veterans who served aboard the ship, including Capt. Walter M. Urban Jr., who was a public affairs officer from 1970 to 2000, serving with both the Army and Navy Reserve. He worked aboard the battleship in February 1985 and February 1991 and remembers those times fondly.

“You always felt the presence of those who walked the decks before you,” Urban said. “She was born in a time of war, was a symbol of our great country at that time ... to be part of that history and see her today about 81 years later is fascinating.”

Ryan Szimanski, the battleship's curator, said moving the ship could be “a once in a generation occurrence." He described the ship as ”one of the most impressive man-made objects ever," noting it's the size of a 90-story office building, can displace 57,500 tons and can move through the water at about 38 mph (61 kph).

Szimanski said there are some concerns about the move, mainly due to the ship's age, but believes things will go smoothly.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said early Monday that he supported an idea to release opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a prisoner exchange just days before the man who was his biggest foe died.

In his first comments to address Navalny's death , Putin said of the dissident's demise: “It happens. There is nothing you can do about it. It's life.”

The remarks were unusual in that he repeatedly referenced Navalny by his name for the first time in years — and that they came at a late-night news conference as results poured in from a presidential election that is certain to extend his rule.

Early returns showed him leading with over 87% of the votes in a race with no competition, after years of ruthlessly suppressing the opposition and crippling independent media.

Navalny's allies last month also said that talks with Russian and Western officials about a prisoner swap involving Navalny were underway . The politician's longtime associate Maria Pevchikh said the talks were in their final stages just days before the Kremlin critic's sudden and unexplained death in an Arctic penal colony.

She accused Putin of "getting rid of" Navalny in order not to exchange him, but offered no evidence to back her claims, and they could not be independently confirmed.

Putin said Monday, also without offering any evidence, that several days before Navalny's death, “certain colleagues, not from the (presidential) administration” told him about “an idea to exchange Navalny for certain people held in penitentiary facilities in western countries." He said he supported the idea.

“Believe it or not, but the person talking to me didn't even finish their sentence when I said: ‘I agree,'" Putin said in response to a question from a journalist about Navalny's death. He added that his one condition was that Navalny wouldn't return to Russia.

“But unfortunately, whatever happened, happened,” Putin said.

Navalny, 47, Russia’s best-known opposition politician , died last month while serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges that he rejected as politically motivated. His allies, family members and Western officials blamed the death on the Kremlin, accusations it has rejected.

The politician's associates said officials listed “natural causes” on paperwork Navalny's mother was shown when she was trying to retrieve his body.

Navalny had been jailed since January 2021 , when he returned to Moscow of his own accord after recuperating in Germany from nerve agent poisoning he blamed on the Kremlin. He was immediately arrested. The Kremlin has vehemently denied it was behind the poisoning.

Pevchikh claimed that there was a plan to swap Navalny and two U.S. citizens held in Russia for Vadim Krasikov . He was serving a life sentence in Germany for the 2019 killing in Berlin of Zelimkhan “Tornike” Khangoshvili, a 40-year-old Georgian citizen of Chechen descent. German judges said Krasikov acted on the orders of Russian authorities.

She didn’t identify the U.S. citizens that were supposedly part of the deal. There are several in custody in Russia, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich , arrested on espionage charges, and Paul Whelan , a corporate security executive from Michigan, convicted of espionage and serving a long prison sentence. They and the U.S. government dispute the charges against them.

German officials have refused to comment when asked if there had been any effort by Russia to swap Krasikov.

Putin had earlier said that the Kremlin was open to negotiations on Gershkovich. He pointed to a man imprisoned in a “U.S.-allied country” for “liquidating a bandit” who had allegedly killed Russian soldiers during separatist fighting in Chechnya. Putin didn’t mention names but appeared to refer to Krasikov.

The international Repair Café slogan is “Toss it? No way!” The Moscow Library wants to help our community put that idea into action — so we offer four free Repair Cafés a year. Community members can save money, learn new skills and keep as many things out of the landfill as possible by bringing items in need of repair to the 1912 Center Great Room. Volunteer experts will share their repair skills in such areas as clothing and textiles; book mending; small appliances; knife sharpening; jewelry; and gluing options. We make no guarantee that items will be fully repaired, and it’s understood that you bring items at your own risk. But hey, you can learn a repair skill, it’s free, and it’s a fun way to socialize with your community. Bonus: light refreshments are provided.
