It’s a given that catamarans are more sensitive to weight and loading than monohulls. Catamaran builders strive to build the lightest boats they can without sacrificing strength and stiffness, and have adapted new building techniques and materials to meet this target. Cutting weight allows more passengers and gear without sacrificing performance.

And the marketing materials reflect it–they load every review and website with polysyllabic technical jargon describing the design and production choices each builder made to deliver the best boat they can.

But when you’re reading a brochure and you come across phrases like “ hand laid bidirectional GRP ” or “ vacuumed bagged e-glass with vinylester resin over a Divinycell core ” do you know what that really means?

All modern production catamarans are made with “FRP” construction (for Fiber Reinforced Polymer). Composites aren’t new–it’s just using materials together to strengthen the whole assembly. Straw was added to bricks centuries ago, and steel reinforced concrete is a staple of construction over the last century. For boats, it’s the use of stranded fibers and cured resins which make FRP different.

The term “FRP” doesn’t get into the technical detail of which fibers and which plastics, and how they’re put together to build your hull. There’s a wide variety of fiber types which can be stranded, woven, chopped or sprayed in a varied of patterns then combined with several types of resins to make hulls with different characteristics.

Some FRP techniques produce lighter, stronger shapes, while others are quicker to build and less expensive to produce. The choice of technique is a function of many factors, from the number of hulls and parts to be built, the type of parts, the budget for the project, and many design specific requirements for weight and strength.

1. FRP Basics

The principle behind all FRP construction is the same – you lay our fibers in the shape you need, then saturate them with resin, removing all the air and voids you can. Resin is left to cure, then the piece is ready to finish and use.

The reality is more complex, since building a boat isn’t like making a flat board or a simple door. You’ve got a complex shape with a designed set of curves to build. “Tooling” is the set of shapes to make the boat parts; molds to cover with fiberglass to get the right shapes.

That’s what makes FRP so effective – you can make almost anything out of it. But to do so requires a lot of choices about what you need for the project at hand.

There isn’t a “best” all around material or technique choice for all jobs, and sometimes a lower cost technique or easier to work with material may be the better solution to the problem.

A. Fiber types

Fiber choices in the last few decades have expanded past the glass fibers used in the first mass produced boats in the 1960s. FRP construction wasn’t new even then, they built the first composite boats using modern fiberglass in the 1940s.

The major fibers used in marine construction fall into three categories – glass, aramids, and carbon. The primary differences are in the strength to weight ratios of the fibers, durability, elasticity, and cost. Some construction may use blends of fiber types to combine performance characteristics.

Glass – the most common material still, because of its low cost and versatility. The most common variety used in GRP (Glass Reinforced Polymer) is “E-glass” which refers to its strand size and mineral content. Other grades have different and sometimes better mechanical properties, but may be more expensive and less appropriate for boat building use. Fiber sizes run 10 to 25 microns for E-glass, though other grades may be smaller.

Brands like Leopard, Lagoon, and most higher production volume builders use E-glass.

Aramids – this includes brand names like Kevlar, Technora and Twaron. They have higher tensile strength than E-glass, and resistant abrasion and punctures. Kevlar is a common choice for bullet proof body armor, and can built a tough, lightweight hull. The materials can be difficult to work with, as it is very tough to cut the cloth. It is often blended with carbon fiber or other materials – Catana is known for using Twaron blends in hull construction.

Carbon – the ultimate in lightweight, strong construction material. Carbon fiber is the most expensive fiber, and is available in a variety of weights, grades and strengths. Fibers are smaller than glass – down to 5 Micron.

The lightest, most expensive hulls are made from carbon, but a catamaran builder may use carbon in places other than the hull to add strength and stiffness. Carbon boards, rudders, and reinforcing structures can enhance performance without driving the price of the boat beyond reach. Carbon is the fiber of choice for many custom builds, racing cats, and Gunboat.

B. Mats, Strands, Roving, Direction, and Weights

Fibers are woven into matting and cloth for construction. Depending on the application, different weights of cloth and cloth patterns and weaves may be more appropriate for the job.

Cloth weight refers to the weight per square yard (or meter) of the cloth. A square yard of nine ounce cloth weighs nine ounces. The heavier the cloth, the stronger it is in a laminate.

Fibers carry loads along their length, so cloth weaves have directionality to their strength. Most builders use several layers of cloth with different orientations to give good universal strength to hulls. Specific FRP applications with strict load-path requirements may have more unidirectional fiber layering – for example, a chainplate manufactured from carbon fiber may use unidirectional fiber.

Cloth – fiberglass cloth is commonly used on outer layers of composites. Cloth may have unidirectional or bidirectional strength. Bidirectional cloths have maximum load strengths in two perpendicular directions. Variations on weaves like a modified twill allow a more flexible cloth for better shaping around complex molds.

Mat – is omnidirectional strands of fiber compressed into a cloth. This is often held together with a resin soluble glue, which makes mat great at conforming to mold shapes without folding and bunching as it collapses when wetted. Because the strands do not align, fiber strength is the same in all directions.

catamaran hull mold for sale

Woven Roving – a heavier cloth made from larger bundles of strands. Woven roving allows for quicker buildup of material and strand weight.

Most FRP layups include multiple layers of different cloth and mat. Finished layers may be finer cloth over courser cloth, over woven roving and mat.

Three primary resins are in common use in marine construction – polyester , vinylester , and epoxy . All resins have materials safety concerns and require care in their use and handling.

Polyester is the least expensive and requires breathing protection because of the VOC emission (Volatile Organic Compounds…nasty, smelly fumes). It doesn’t have good bonding/gluing capability, and should only be used with glass fibers for structural building. Some polyester resins are referred to as “isophthalic” resins.

Vinylester is chemically similar to a hybrid of polyester and epoxy, and performs best with fiberglass. It shouldn’t be used in high strength applications with carbon or aramid fibers. It has some adhesive qualities which polyester lacks, it shrinks less during curing, and has better impact resistance.

The added strength of vinylester coupled with increased water resistance makes it an attractive option for many catamaran builders. It costs less than epoxy, but still has better performance than polyester.

Epoxy is the most expensive, but is three times the strength of the others. It offers the best adhesion and the only resin for building structural elements with carbon and aramid. It resists water intrusion better than the other resins, resists blisters, emits no VOCs, and shrinks less. The major drawback is it is more brittle if it takes an impact.

While epoxy is “the best” in terms of strength and ease of building, there are many applications where other resins are appropriate. Budget is a big driver – a boat made from E-Glass doesn’t need epoxy resin, and considerable cost savings to meet a construction price target may drive the choice.

They can build quality boats from all material combinations, but price and performance will drive materials choices to keep some boats more affordable.

2. Cored Construction

What’s the best way to make fiberglass strong? To a point, you can make it thicker. As it gets thicker, it gets heavier. A hollow shape can take more compressive load than a solid one of the same weight, and the same principle applies to fiberglass construction.

Consider an I-Beam used in building construction. It has the same strength (or more) as a solid rectangular beam of similar mass. The compressive load on the beam is supported by the outside edges of the material, the metal in the middle doesn’t contribute much to the strength. So we can remove metal to get the “I” shape while still keeping those sides rigid, making a lighter girder with less material.

The same principle applies to cored construction with fiberglass. Making a sandwich of two layers of fiberglass with a light core between them allows for the greater strength with weight savings.

There are drawbacks – the biggest risk is damage which breaks the skin, which can let water into the core. Earlier cored construction used materials prone to saturation and rot if they got wet. Some builders opt to do cored construction above the waterline and solid below to minimize some of these risks.

But the advantages in weight savings and increased stiffness offset the drawbacks, and there may be a few other side effects like sound and temperature insulation. Like resins and fibers, core materials offer distinct advantages, disadvantages and price points.

Most builders have adopted a hybrid approach, building solid hulls below the waterline, and cored hulls and decks above. This gives a balance of weight and safety.

A. Balsa Core

Balsa is light and inexpensive. The first cored construction used balsa, but it has the disadvantage of being wood. As a natural material, if it gets wet it can rot and break down. Builders use “end grain” balsa – shorter cross cut sections – to prevent wicking of water if there is an intrusion.

catamaran hull mold for sale

B. Foam Core

Closed cell foam cores give good strength to weight savings while minimizing water intrusion. If you get water in the core, it won’t spread very far. Divinycell is a popular PVC foam core, though there are several choices with different densities and compressive strengths.

catamaran hull mold for sale

Some foam cores are not suitable for heat treatment, but infused or vacuum bagged boats like the Outremer and PDQ do well with it.

C. Honeycomb

Honeycomb cores are often the most expensive, but also give some of the best strength to weight ratios. Honeycombed cells made from resin cured aramid papers are some of the best, but also among the most costly. They offer good stiffness, but can be hard to shape. Aluminum and other resin-infused papers are other core materials builders can choose from.

3. Construction and Resin

When building a hull, there are optimal ratios of fiber to resin saturation for target strength and weight. Too little resin and you may not have enough strength (or worse, voids and gaps), and too much, and you’re just adding weight without adding strength. Resins are also a significant material cost in building the boat, so over application not only increases weight but adds cost.

catamaran hull mold for sale

There are many ways to assemble the cores, fibers and resins to build a finished laminate hull – we’re addressing the most common in boat building. Each approach has strengths and limitations, and an impact on the bottom-line cost to build the boat. Any voids or air pockets in the laminate can be disastrous; these techniques have been developed to increase saturation and reduce the risk of voids.

A. Hand Layup / Open Molding

As the name implies, this is the application of resin by hand to cloth as it’s laid into a mold. Wetting is done with a brush, and the laminate is rolled out to remove any air pockets and voids. This is the simplest way to lay up fiberglass, but also the least precise and consistent and will use the most resin.

Skilled craftsmen have built some of the finest vessels in the world this way. Though it’s more popular with monohulls, which are less sensitive to weight, many catamarans built with hand layups on open molds are still out cruising and performing well.

B. Spraying

Using chopped-strand fiber mixed with resin, a “chopper gun” can spray the mixture into a mold to lay down the composite. A consistent thickness can be difficult, but this is a low cost construction technique which makes a very resin-rich laminate. Using sprayed fibers gives lower strength in all directions compared to meticulously laid down mat and bi-directional cloth. But it is a quick technique popular with mass produced, smaller boats.

It is an excellent technique for parts with complex geometry where weight is not an issue, but you will not see it often in catamaran construction. It’s heavy with resin without any resultant increase in strength.

C. Vacuum Bagging (Wet layup)

When an open molded component has been laid up and wetted with resin, vacuum bagging takes the process a step further. After the wetting is complete, air tight plastic bagging is secured around the wetted area, and the air is pumped out of the bag. The vacuum pulls excess resin out and collapses air pockets.

catamaran hull mold for sale

The goal is to get thorough wetting and produce as strong a laminate as possible without excess resin. Knysa and Leopard are two builders that use vacuum bagging on their hulls to reduce weight.

D. Resin Infusion

For resin infusion the cloth, matting and core is laid in place dry, then sealed in an air-tight bag. A vacuum pump attaches to one side of the bag, and on the other a feed for resin. The vacuum sucks the air out of the dry cloth stack, then pulls the resin through the stack, infusing and wetting it.

Resin infusion, when done right, gives the lightest, strongest laminates with no voids and the minimum resin weight for maximum strength. SCRIMP is a variant of the resin infusion process used by some builders, including TPI which build many early Lagoon cats.

E. Pre-preg

Using pre-preg (for “Pre Impregnated”) cloth for your laminating gets rid of the resin bucket. They manufacture cloth with a partially catalyzed resin pressed into it, then it’s chilled or frozen to stop the curing process. There is no need for seperately mixed resins, and there’s no worry your resin might “go off” and harden before you’re done wetting the cloth. Instead, the cloth is assembled, vacuumed, then heated to kick off the curing process.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to using pre-preg for your laminate work. The big disadvantage is the cost; it is most expensive material to use. You also need to chill and store the cloth until you need it, though some can be at room temperature for a couple of weeks without kicking off. And you need an oven which requires some clever tricks if you’re building a forty or fifty foot boat.

But the strength to weight ratio will always be perfect. High tech honeycomb cores are best suited to pre-preg lamination, and without racing against resin cure times, you can ensure perfect cloth placement and precise layout in the build process.

The primary use for pre-preg in boating is high performance race boats. With catamarans, pre-preg may be used high load parts, like Gunboat does for foils and rudders.

4. Industry Examples

Across the catamaran building industry you’ll find almost all the above techniques and materials used, though some are less common. You aren’t likely to find chopped strand sprayed layups in ocean going cats, and hand layups can lead to heavier hulls than weight sensitive catamaran designers prefer. Most manufacturers have moved to vacuum bagging or resin infusion, with a few of the highest end boats using pre-preg for key components.

Built by Robertson & Caine in South Africa, the hull material is vacuum bagged, end-grain balsa-cored E-glass with polyester.

Hand laid, bagged vinylester over an Airex foam core in the hulls.

Earlier Prout catamarans like the Snowgoose 34 featured hand laid solid FRP hulls and decks. Over time they switched to foam or balsa cores for decks and above the waterline.

Older PDQ boats were made from vacuum bagged vinylester – solid below the waterline and cored with CoreCell foam above the waterline and in decks. Newer PDQ models switched to epoxy resin.

All glass is vacuum bagged. Below the waterline is solid E-glass and vinylester. The rest is unidirectional, bidirectional, and triaxial cloths over a Nida-Core polypropylene honeycomb core with isophthalic and vinylester resins.

The Gemini cats are built with a solid hand layup of woven roving and fiberglass mat and polyester resin. Decks are cored with end grain balsa. The Gemini 3200 introduced vinylester resin into the layup to prevent blistering.

Older Lagoons were SCRIMP infused vinylester with and end grain balsa core above the waterline and in the decks.

Newer Lagoon catamarans use polyester and vinylester resins, also infused with balsa cores above the waterline and solid below.

With a carbon fiber inner skin, Catana also uses Twaron aramid fibers in the sandwiched hull over a foam core.

Fontaine Pajot

Primary hull construction is resin-infused vinylester with a balsa cored hull and deck.

Beneath the waterline, Outremer uses a single layer, solid vinylester laminate for safety. The hulls and deck are vinylester with a Divinycell foam core. They stiffen certain components with carbon for rigidity and durability.

Gunboat hulls are epoxy infused carbon fiber with a Nomex honeycomb core. They build dagger boards and other high load components with pre-preg carbon.

This project is being sold "as is where is". The hull is currently tack welded within a fully insulated and functioning shop in Clarkston Washington on the shores of the Snake River a mere 120 miles from its mouth to the Columbia River and another 345 miles to the Pacific Ocean. Since the project currently is tack welded, final weld up and more lead for ballast need to be added. After which, she'll be ready to move to a new destination via truck or water for finishing if the buyer so desires. The shop is available for lease if the buyer decides to finish the boat on location. The hard "Bimini" top is not connected due to headroom within the shop. All specifications, cut files, blueprints, and plans are included. And, all aluminum to finish the hull is reported to be onsite. Construction began in 2005. She represents the unfulfilled dream of an ambitious, hard-working entrepreneur who ran out of time to complete her - keep the dream alive! Stock #143811 One of a kind Custom Project sail boat! She is unfinished and ready for a new owner to make her all she was meant to be! 95 Foot Schooner Project This Schooner was the brainchild of its owner after sailing as a missionary in the South Pacific starting in 1985. Over the past 20 years, he has sailed over 42,000 nautical miles reaching over twenty countries and island nations. These experiences as a missionary and providing relief work were the catalyst for this project. Designed as a highly capable long range, fast and safe offshore sailing vessel in aluminum for sailing expeditions ranging from the tropics to the Arctic, the original intent was that she be capable of doing rescue work, mission work, and relief supplies delivery for troubled areas. Long range under power was also a primary requirement, thus one could legitimately refer to this as a true motor-sailor, with 100% functionality in either mode. The Schooner's lines will provide high performance in an easily driven hull, planned for maximum speed and the fastest passage times. The twin keels and rudders allow her to sit down where there is a big range with the tides. The interior layout has been planned around an extended family or a large charter party up to 20 passengers. As such, this 3 master will also make an exceptionally fine charter vessel. Displacement will vary from around 195,000# when lightly loaded, to a maximum capacity of 259,000# with tanks full, stores for twenty people, and the boat ready for a long passage, or alternately loaded with a cargo of supplies. Hull speed is predicted to achieve nearly 18 knots. Typical sailing speeds in favorable conditions should be in the range of 12 to 14 knots. In other words, built for comfort AND speed...! Reason for selling is failing health.

This is a steel hulled boat project that was always operated in fresh water (Missouri River, in South Dakota, no rust) manufactured in Louisiana by the folks that made "swiftboats". Wood and fiberglass wheelhouse needs rebuilding. (We will include 11 newer style windows). Boat has twin Detroit Diesel supercharged 6-71's, one showed 900 hours, was torn down for inspection, looked good, but as long as it was apart, valve job was done, and rings and bearings replaced. This motor now has only run-in and dyno time. (dyno'd at 251 hp) Second motor showed 660 hours was not disassembled. These engines counter-rotate and have Allision 1.5:1 transmissions, and brass propellers. Included is the boats original lighting (1- mile- ray search light, nav and interior), fog horn, 4 cyl diesel generator (12k), fire suppression bottle (35#), stainless steel rudders, propeller shafts, controls and instrumentation. Boat has been in dry dock for approx. 15 years, both engines turn freely. This boat was spec'd by the Corp of Engineers in 1953, and was operated as a passenger transport. Again this boat will need a complete refit. Motors alone are worth the asking price.

Relisting do to non-paying low feedback Buyer..... Up for sale is a 32' Catamaran sailboat hull in need of a total rebuild. This open water sailboat is in poor condition but the hull is ridged and strong. I purchased this sailboat from a marina in Waukegan IL in 2008. The marina did provide me with a clear title. The hull is thick fiberglass and we considered it a good candidate for a full rebuild. The hull is the only thing we considered usable on the entire boat. Lower hull is all glass and very ridged. One thing that will need to be fixed, there is a steel skid runner that extends the entire length of the bottom of the hull, (it is a piece of like 1.5" x 1.5" angle iron that they bonded to the bottom of the hull). This runner should have been out of stainless or aluminum but it was done in steel and it is rusting. A line of fiberglass around it has split. You will want to simply cut out all of this steel skid runner and either replace it or simply remove it as it is not needed. There was an inboard engine and drive but I parted that out some time ago as it was not going to be part of the rebuild I had planned. There is also a large aluminum mast with roller furler included but the mast was damaged while in storage, (yard maintenance guy drove over it about 4' from the top). This catamaran hull will need a total rebuild and is sold AS/IS. Do not buy this boat if you are thinking you can just paint it and throw some sails on it. Transport is of course the issue. There is no trailer. Beam is a little over 14', (we permitted at 14' for transport). I personally, would think about sectioning the boat right down the center for transport. I have done this before to a 45' boat that we were reconfiguring. It can be done in a day with a common circular saw. It can then easily be pulled with a gooseneck trailer and a p/u truck. Another possible transport strategy would be to find a carrier who can haul the boat on a 45degee angle on a low deck trailer. We can crane load from our location on to your transport or you can possibly just back the trailer under the elevated twin hulls. Loading and transport is obviously at buyers expense. I am sorry, I simply do not have the time to get involved with transport estimates and logistics. Good luck bidding and please, no zero feedback or low feedback buyers unless you contact me first. ****The Ohio River is less than 50 miles away from our location. There have been Ebayer's suggestions that possibly some basic hull repair is done on location and then the cat is towed down the Ohio River. This is a possible transport solution.

I got this boat a couple of years ago as a project boat to restore and re-power. Has extended bracket and nice hard top with canvass.. Needs engines, rigging, controls, and has a few soft spots on floor. I ripped out old wall carpet and removed the head from the cabin. Sanded and painted the interior walls to make it easier to maintain. Just don't have time to get finish her. Would make a great Gulf boat. A single 250 would be enough to power this boat. Proline put single 250's on them or twins 130's. Trailer is in good shape with new tires. Asking 4500 Or best reasonable offer. 251- Three zero zero- zero two eight seven

Make Cape Dory

This is a 1983 Cape Dory 24' Trawler Project Boat. Cape Dory Yachts was founded in 1963 in East Taunton, Mass. Originally a sailboat company, by the end of the 70’s fuel crisis, Cape Dory decided to explore the powerboat market. They ended up being enormously successful, and built hundreds of powerboats of many sizes and configurations. Widgeon is the factory prototype, hull number 1, the first powerboat they ever built. Built in Taunton Mass, I have seen some evidence that she spent part of her life in Canada, then in Texas, and finally has been in Florida for many years. Although she has the lines of a Maine lobsterboat, she also comes with a mast and boom so that she can sail (all original). You will find more information, including a downloadable original sales brochure at the cape dory website: capedory.org/specs/cd24pwr.htm She has her original engine, a Yanmar 3HM 27hp, and uses about ½ gal/hr at a cruising speed of approximately 8 knots. She is the only CD24 trawler to have a Yanmar, as the general arrangement was changed by hull 002, and only a Westerbeke would fit in the new engine location. The engine does not have an accurate hour log, but starts and runs well, uses little oil, and has had much love since I have owned her, including a new injection pump, exhaust system, s/w pump, all hoses and much more. Even though her engine is in storage, I would be able to run the engine on blocks (demo) prior to a sale. I have owned her for five years, and have had her both in Pompano FL and Merritt Island Fl. When I bought her I surveyed her and knew she was going to need all of her interior wood replaced eventually because of rot. Her hull and house are fiberglass (very heavy layup) but her cabin, bulkheads and platform framing were all wood. Her platform deck is glass over plywood. I have removed her engine and systems, and nearly completed all demo of the framing and ply. During the process detailed construction pictures were taken of everything as well as measurements. All tabs were left in place for alignment. All she needs now is new wood put in, her platform deck glassed over, and to be fitted out. Her engine and all equipment have been stored, and go with the boat, and I can provide endless advice as I used to build and restore boats professionally. I am presently continuing to restore her even as I list her for sale, but the reason for selling is that my wife and I are selling our home on the water, and in moving inland I no longer want to keep a boat.

Category High Performance Boats

1995 Cougar Offshore Racing Hull  (LOCATION: Clearwater FL)  OWN A SERIOUS OFFSHORE MONOHULL RACING BOAT - This 46' Cougar Custom Offshore Racer is available now. Hull only with 53’ trailer included.  This boat's story is described below.  In 1994 Great Lakes Power’s President Harry Allen made the decision to build a state of the art diesel powered endurance racer that would be the ultimate signature for the quality and reliability of the marine products Great Lakes sells and services worldwide.  It started with a special composite 46’ English built Cougar hull which was modified to accommodate triple Caterpillar diesels and Twin Disc Arneson surface drives. Great Lakes Power’s management team assisted Richard Quandt, the project’s engineer and crew chief in designing and specifying the 18,500 pounds of engines, hardware and equipment that would be added to the 5000 pound hull. It incorporated several first time design features many of which are used in high performance boats 15 years later. John Cosker, Conner Marine and John Pompi, Marine Performance were also key participants in the vessel design, construction and upfit.  The Spirit of America project was a culmination of Harry’s long time interest in offshore power boat racing which started with Cummin’s Engine Company in 1965 along with his dream of piloting the fastest boat from Miami to Nassau and back. The team’s first record was set on a 3 hour and 3 minute run from Toledo to Buffalo in 1996. Dave Bell, Great Lakes Executive Vice President was in the drivers seat with Harry at the throttles, Rich Quandt crew chief and navigator, and Eric Lavine as the onboard technician.  Bob Hallengren of Caterpillar and Bobby Chan of Ringhaver provided valuable assistance in preparing standard production engines for their extended duty. They were also on board when the Sun Coast to Gold Coast record (originally established by Kyle Petty) was broken in 1998. That record would be a precursor to the Miami to Nassau to Miami record run which is documented in this video.  On Monday morning, June 15, 1998 the crew of Harry Allen, throttle man, Steve Kildahl, driver, Kevin Brown, navigator and Rich Quandt, crew chief left the Marriot Miami Marina and headed out Go

ALLMAND BOATS BOAT MOLD DESIGN AND FABRICATION

Nature

Fiberglass boats are made from boat molds. Many small start-up companies will purchase used boat molds then go into production making fiberglass boats. That is one way and probably the cheapest boat molds to be found. Buying used boat molds is the lowest cost because most boat companies do not want to store older models and are looking to practically give them away. Another way to start boat manufacturing is to find a used boat hull then make some modifications to it then cast a mold from the modified hull. This strategy is not too expensive and will make the new boat semi unique. Buying a used hull, then modifying, then making a mold will add some distinction but still the original brand is usually still recognizable. The ultimate strategy and most expensive way to begin new fiberglass boat production is to make a completely new design then make new molds that are yours and unique. The advantage is obvious. If you did a good job in the design then chances are there will be some demand, and, the only source will be to order from you. This is the best scenario for making boat molds for boat production. This leads to two ways to proceed with making your molds. If you are a hands on person with a small budget you can build the plugs and molds in stages as follows. First draw your design on paper assuming you have some hull design experience. Once you have a drawing that makes sense you put some scale to your drawing. The next step is to make a life size model from 2x4s, planks, plywood bulkheads then cover with plywood, then final finish shaping your newly designed hull with body filler. Once you have feathered out the shape it is best to hire a professional finisher like a vehicle body finisher and painter to get the look, contours, lines, surfaces and finish sufficient for mold casting. OK, you made your plug or life size model from scratch according to your drawings on paper. Now you are ready to start the boat mold casting phase. Before you can cast your mold from the plug needs to be waxed with mold release wax, McGuires is the best and most common mold release wax used that I know of. I have used it since the Stone Age. The waxing phase takes many coats; when you think you have waxed it enough, wax it again as many times as you did the first time, then three more times after that. Now the next point some may debate. I say better to be safe than sorry. If your mold casting does not release from the plug, you are in serious trouble and could add a significant amount of cash to recover. I suggest the next step be to spray on PBA or PVA which stands for Ploy Butyl Acetate or Poly Vinyl Acetate. A half dozen of one or six of the another. The main idea is to ensure proper and clean separation from the plug. After the PBA is applied then the gel coat can be applied. The gel coat can be applied two ways. One way is to apply by brush and roller. The other way is to apply with a spray gun. It all depends on your skill, budget and a few other factors. So now apply the gel coat and cast the mold by following the lamination schedule drawn up at the same time the design was drawn. OK, so now you cast your mold and it is time to release. If you followed the steps and did not forget any of the 1000 minute details involved than you should now have a great set of molds. Congratulations on a job well done; but hold on the job is not finished. Now it is time to figure out how many boats that will make from the new boat molds, and what kind of finish is expected from the boats made. If the plan is to make a few hundred boat hulls then one method is followed. If only a handful of boat hulls is to be made from the molds then another method is followed. The kind of finish expected will determine the next phase of mold finishing, as well as how the boat hulls will be cast from the new boat molds needs to be decided. Time to look at that pesky budget again. Want to make plenty of boat hulls with a nice finish and use the best method for casting hulls? Then the budget for the mold finishing phase needs to be 70% more than the cheaper way in the boat mold finishing process. If you are smart, then you have the budget to do this thing right and will opt for the better option. In this phase several more layers of material are applied then the last few layers will wrap around the turn table frame. If you don’t know what a turn table frame is, then when you get to this point email me and I will tell you. Next after the frame is set up and the boat mold is fixed to the turn table, swing frame, pivot or the whatchamacallit mold turning thingy, the final finish sanding phase is performed. At this point the person who is paying for this thing is either thanking God he did a good job on the plug phase and waxing phase and did not cut corners, or he is throwing a fit yelling at everyone because if corners were cut and shortcuts were taken these mistakes will rear their ugly head at this stage after thousands have been spent. One reason is that is at least ten times harder to correct imperfections inside the boat molds than they are to correct on the outside of the plug. Let’s assume the plug and waxing was performed correctly. Now is when the vehicle body finisher is brought back to sand and apply a mirror finish to the new boat mold. After the final mold finishing the boats are ready to be made. The level of quality and care put into the mods will be evident when the first hull is cast. Now let us assume you are not a hands on guy. Then you need to have at least ten times the budget to make new boat molds the hands on method, with the carpenters, plywood, fiberglass laminators and vehicle body finishers method. Assuming you do have the budget then you probably are not reading this and have already met with your board members to hire a naval architect consulting firm that has located a 3D CNC router to cut your plug from a house sized block of specialized structural foam. If that is the case then you already have the millions or at least a million to start your boat building business. In the end, the product made will be comparable either way. It is the uniqueness, quality of finish, contours and surfaces that counts.

Where to Buy a Home in Moscow in 2024

The growth in suburban house prices in 2021 can be as high as 15%. This prognosis was voiced by the participants of Moscow’s real estate market. Housing near Moscow has already gone up in value by 7%, and before the end of the year, this number is quite likely to rise by another 2–3%. The pandemic has changed the trends on the suburban real estate market – the current demand for detached houses is noticeably higher than before the global outbreak of Covid-19, and this naturally influences the cost of residential homes, say the experts. They also note that traditionally, the fall-winter period has always been considered a time of low demand for houses for sale in Russia; however, the opposite is now the case.

Here are the Moscow real estate categories to consider when buying a house in Russia:

  • By direction and location (Rublyovka, Novaya Riga, Barvikha);
  • By classification ( luxury , business class, economy);
  • By development format (townhouses, detached private homes).

When purchasing homes in Moscow, Russia, a good rule of thumb is to select houses within an 18.6-mile (30 km) radius from the center of Moscow. This ensures you will get a well-developed infrastructure, and that the chosen location will be replete with hospitals and schools.

We recommend considering the West, South and North directions just out of Moscow. You may notice that country houses are noticeably cheaper on the capital’s Eastern side. However, this is due to poor environmental conditions – the result of the presence of a number of industrial facilities in the entire East area.

Best Cottage Communities in Moscow

Muscovites with high incomes live in closed elite cottage communities that have their own full infrastructure. Such cottage communities are usually designed by Europe’s best architects, especially contracted for the job. These locations have everything: private English schools, restaurants, shops, pools and gyms, beauty salons and equestrian sports clubs.

The most expensive houses up for sale are located in the Barvikha Hills area (Rublevka direction). This elite location near Moscow even has its own famous brand boutiques: Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Bentley, Ferrari and Harley-Davidson. The least expensive house here costs 1.5 million US dollars and has a floor area of 656 sqft (200 m²). This gated community is just 10-20 minutes by car away from Moscow itself.

We encourage you to consider some of the following elite locations as you decide where to purchase your ideal property: Etude Family Club, La-Mansh, Western Residence, Yusupovo Life Park, Odintsovo, Novaya Riga and Pirogovo. There you will find everything one requires for a comfortable life, at the price of 300 to 500 thousand US dollars for a residential home.

As you choose your future home, make sure to take into account the category of the land on which it is built. Each category has its own taxation rate. Our lawyer can explain all the details on property taxes in Russia to you at your request. Contact us to get your consultation!
