Best in class: How Hunton Yachts is creating the best performance cruising yachts

British luxury yacht builder Hunton Yachts is setting a new standard in ultra-performance cruising yachts with the introduction of two new models; the H45, an extended and reimagined version of the H43, and the completely new  game changing 16.7 metre H55 . Both models see the British brand lean on its power-boat racing heritage to create the best performance cruising yachts of its generation.

Hunton chief executive Fiona Pool explains that both models have become integral to the company’s strategy. “These two models will be the best in class in every way, epitomising Hunton’s philosophy of quality, performance and luxury.”

She drew links between Hunton Yachts and the high end of the luxury automotive industry. “When you build a Bentley or a Rolls Royce you know that every inch of it is perfection – and it’s exactly the same with Hunton,” she says.

Pool points to the builder’s newest and largest cruising model, the H55, highlighting its “advanced hull geometry.” The H55's deep V hull has a dead rise of 21 degrees, allowing it to “cut through every wave and chop”.

“The rise allows it to cut across the top of the water, which creates little drag and means you’re not pounding against the waves,” she explains. This is combined with “an extremely low centre of gravity” which gives the H55 unrivalled stability, setting Hunton apart from other builders.

The H55 combines cutting-edge hull design with Hunton’s racing DNA. The result is an eye watering top speed of 55 knots and a range of “superyacht features”, Pool claims. These include fly-by wire digital joystick and touchscreen controls.

The H45 meanwhile is an evolution of Hunton’s smaller H43 model. Pool explained how extending the H43 by “just a few feet” created 30% more volume. This allowed the yard to reconfigure the cockpit and create a “proper aft cabin”, increasing maximum sleeping capacity to four guests.

Both models are available with a number of customisable options spanning fabrics, colours and furnishings, ensuring no two models are ever the same. “If an owner wants the colour scheme to match their Aston Martin, of course we can do that,” Pool says. Both models are aimed at a client who favours exclusivity and uniqueness, Pool says, and promised that Hunton can certainly deliver in this regard.

While Hunton is keen to emphasis the universal appeal of both models, Pool believes the Asian and North American markets are ripe territory, especially for the H55. The US has also become a key focus for the company as it prepares to complete construction on the first H55 by the end of this year.

I stood gobsmacked. The swordlike profile, metallic silver topsides and teak-accented side decks and foredeck of the U.K.-built [Hunton][] XRS37 offered Bond-like sophistication. Gazing at her lines as she approached the transient dock at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was like looking at a perfectly tailored tuxedo. I soon discovered that underneath that fine form is a vessel that has a license to thrill, too. The finely pointed bow of my 37 scowled at the sea, daring the water to come at her.

A slightly scalloped ocean off the Florida coast posed no opposition. Her standard, twin 430-horsepower MerCruiser 8.2 HO ECT gasoline engines (370-horsepower Yanmar ZT370 diesels are optional) are stealthily concealed under the aft sun-pad seating for three and offered instant response from the single-lever Mercury DTS controls. Like a 3-year-old coming out of the gate at Churchill Downs, my 37 was off when the throttles got firewalled.

Her beefy V-8 motors bellowed as my test boat streaked across the water at 30 knots, then 40 knots, then 50 knots. … I looked toward the coast only to see a blur of sandy beaches pass before my sunglass-covered but teared eyes. Did we just pass Miami? I questioned to myself. The Garmin GPS displayed an average top hop of 55.5 knots, and it seemed that we were above the water and that every other blade of her propellers attached to the end of her stern drives sliced the sea, leaving a near flat wake behind her.

By the time the 37 had completed her all-out gallop, my boat’s deep-V hull had carved a scar into the sea. That was a couple of months ago, and I’d guess that the ocean is still smarting from that smackdown. I know I’m still waiting for my hair to flatten. (That is, what wasn’t blown off my noggin permanently.)

It doesn’t take too long to realize that this Hampshire, England, import, which is named for her designer, Jeff Hunton, comes from a racing heritage. Her hull form, which features 45 degrees of deadrise at the bow, 30 degrees forward and 25 degrees at the transom, descends from a vessel that was a couple of feet longer and was originally designed as a Class II diesel race boat.

Hunton successfully campaigned his missile-looking craft called the Kent Koi for years, winning the coveted Guernsey Gold Cup, which is a three-race series in the U.K. The engines in the racing version of this boat were a pair of 630 hp Sabres that saw her top out at 76 knots. The production 37 has also served as a race boat across the pond in the Cruiser Class, even winning a U.K. Championship, which is a series of 12 races. And to race that often, she needs to be durable.

To ensure the 37’s strength and sustainability over the long haul, Hunton builds its boats (there’s a 43-foot version too) to handle the rigors of high-speed ocean running with a hand-laid, biaxial E-glass and Kevlar hull. The 37 features balsa coring in her hull and topsides as well as foam coring for further strengthening without added weight. All totaled, she comes in at around 11,023 pounds. If you ordered one today, she could be delivered and ready to run in about five months. She also comes with a long list of standard equipage, including electronics and a bow thruster, and only a handful of options like heat and air conditioning, making the purchase process easy for owners.

One of the remarkable things about running this boat is the comfort level from the wheel at speed. The 37 can pivot and change direction with the precision of a pro hockey player and then make for the horizon effortlessly. Her bolster-style seats, which flank a centerline entryway to the belowdecks area, hug you around the middle, offering a sense of control at all times. And keeping course at speed is made easy since the Garmin 5008 multifunction display is placed in the center of the helm console and can be checked without taking your eyes off the road.

I found that even when running this boat at 40-plus knots, I could comfortably converse with Total Marine’s John-Henry Falk, who was sitting in the passenger bolster seat across the way. (Total Marine is the U.S. dealer for Hunton.) Our third companion on this sea trial was John Cafaro, who is a director of design for Chevrolet at General Motors and knows something about sleekly designed fast vehicles. He looked completely unfazed by the speeds of the 37 as he sat comfortably in the cockpit’s U-shaped seating for four.

In fact, Cafaro had outstretched legs and sported a Cheshire-cat grin, and the scene instantly illustrated this boat’s mission as a fun-at-sea vessel. I easily pictured us shooting across the Gulf Stream for conch fritters and Kalik in Bimini, and being back for 5 o’clock cocktails.

If you wish, the 37 could do an overnight in Bimini too. Her belowdecks space is admittedly narrow because of the boat’s 8-foot-6-inch beam, and headroom will require most average-size adults to do some ducking, but there is a berth for two all the way forward plus a single head. The amidships section has cozy, opposing settees. There’s also a two-burner electric cooktop should you desire to try your hand at meal preparation. Just add that air conditioning and heat, and she’d be comfortable for a couple for an evening.

But I would not be spending the evening on board. I was at a boat show and had to get back to working the docks. As Falk deftly brought the 37 alongside to let me hop off, a crowd gathered and gazed as I had when she first pulled up. Wide-eyed kids and adults pointed, commented and stared as a late-afternoon sun glistened off that metallic-color hull. “What’s that?” many inquired enthusiastically. “A Hunton 37,” I responded. One tiny tyke and future boat owner, for sure, looked up and said, “I like it!” Me too, me too.

Hunton back in business

Hunton Yachts has the key assets of Hunton Powerboats after the previous company went into liquidation

A new company called Hunton Yachts Ltd has purchased the key assets of Hunton Powerboats after the previous company was put into voluntary liquidation late last year.

Hunton Yachts Ltd secured the moulds, the Hunton name and the intellectual property rights to the existing range of boats for an undisclosed sum but not the Romsey-based factory or its employees. MBY understands that at least five other parties were interested in buying some of the assets but were outbid by Hunton Yachts Ltd.

The new company now plans to launch a new range of luxury yachts, including the long awaited XRS 55, by outsourcing the manufacturing process to a third party boat builder. Discussions are already ongoing with a number of different yards in the UK and overseas but no decisions have yet had been made on who will get the business.

Fiona Pool, the former managing director of Hunton Powerboats, stays on as the CEO and sole director of the new company, with the backing of two other shareholders. Additional investment is also claimed to be forthcoming from a new outside source.

Speaking to MBY , Fiona Pool confirmed that Hunton Powerboats had been losing around £1million a year and that restructuring the business in order to reduce its overheads was necessary in order to attract new investment. She also confirmed that all Hunton Powerboats’ creditors and suppliers had been paid in full and no customers had been left out of pocket, although around 20 employees were made redundant.

“We are now a debt free, clean sheet company with 80% less fixed overheads,” said Fiona.

Hunton Yachts Ltd will now look to launch a new range of luxury performance boats based on heavily refreshed versions of the existing models and an all new 55ft craft built on a modified Jeff Hunton hull with twin 1,200hp engines and a top speed of more than 50 knots. Available in both hard top and fully open guises with two ensuite cabins below decks, it will set the tone for a new generation of Hunton craft.

More details and images of the XRS 55 will be released in the coming months but the finished boat is unlikely to hit the water before Summer 2018 at the earliest.

Commenting on the new business, Fiona Pool said: “This is a very exciting time in Hunton’s history. We have emerged as a leaner, healthier business with a very clear strategy for new product development, dynamic marketing and a global outreach.”

Hunton XRS43

  • By Michael Verdon
  • Updated: June 17, 2014

hunton yachts

The Hunton XRS43 is right out of a James Bond movie, a gentleman’s speedboat that would make the perfect escape craft from Dr. No’s island lair or a chase boat in Casino Royale. It’s a sprinter dressed up in a tuxedo. Imagine the build quality and near-flawless fit and finish of a Chris-Craft Corsair 36 coupled to a double-step hull and twin Mercury Racing 600 SCi sterndrives. You get “performance with panache.”

The XRS43 looks particularly at home on the French Riviera, where we tested it, with the oversize teak swim platform, rear-facing transom sun pad, and L-shaped lounge. The teak rolls forward from the swim platform into the cockpit and along the side decks, and even covers much of the bow. The $999,000 price tag might sound alarm bells, but most of the big-ticket extras like the teak, bow thruster, hydraulic helm seats and full Garmin electronics are standard. Belowdecks amenities are as thoughtfully designed as in the cockpit, with a forward berth, a large galley (Isotherm fridge, two-burner Kenyon stove, microwave) and a lounge that has a white tweed cover instead of vinyl.

Headroom in the full head is 6 feet 3 inches. For a go-fast boat, the cabin feels big.

But once the Mercs light up, this British gentleman turns into a street fighter. The double-step hull planed in five seconds, reaching 30 mph in seven seconds. At our top end, 65 mph, the Mediterranean coastline blurred. Hunton designed the hull to be stable in rough water, and it landed softly off the 3-footers, carving into turns. No shudders, shakes or chine-walking. Dual throttles are perfectly positioned at elbow level. There’s a Star Wars hyperspace leap from 3,000 to 3,500 rpm, when the XRS43 sprints from 15.7 mph to 39.5 mph. But the ride from one end of the speedo to the other felt safe. Hunton already has its XRS37 in the United States and expects the XRS43 by the end of summer 2014. We suggest a sea trial: It will leave you stirred, not shaken.

company History

the Builder Hunton Yachts was founded in 1979 Jeff Antonom (Jeff Hunton) . Sam Hunton at the time was racing on motor yachts and came up with the idea to build their own high-speed vessels.

a year after the founding of the shipyard, which then became known as Hunton Powerboats , her first boat, Gazelle 23 , won the championship British Offshore Powerboat Championship that became a significant event and proof of the correctness of the chosen course.

In 1982 Antono joined by Philip Warner that their investment gave a new impetus to the development of the shipyard. In subsequent years, we developed 14 different designs of yachts and boats, from 7 to 13 metres and also 14-meter high-speed patrol boat.

Despite the fact that the boat was never intended for racing, they fit into the new class of the RYA, presented in 1980, and subsequently won more than one race, including 10 British Championships.

In 2009, the brand Hunton Powerboats was sold to a new group of investors financial crisis. Jeff Hunton was appointed Director of the new company, but resigned the position in 2013.

Hunton Powerboats was liquidated voluntarily in 2016. However, the brand with 40-year history revived in the face of new company Hunton Yachts Limited .

CEO Fiona Pool (Fiona Pool), who previously held the post of Executive Director of Goldman Sachs, explains the strategy Hunton Yachts "Yacht of the individual assemblies make up a significant portion of our production, and we are one of the few production sites, which can offer it."

Manufacturing

All models Hunton Powerboats were built at a private shipyard in Hampshire . After the transition of the brand and intellectual property of the newly formed company Hunton Yachts, the production was transferred to the shipyard companies Fibre Mechanics to Leamington Spa and Rib-X Ltd Leicestershire .

the Company is building >and design >high-speed motor yacht and boat >outboard motors >inflatable cushions, >racing and speed boats, as well as >tenders. Boats of new generation, for example, 16, 7-meter Hunton model H55 (XRS55), used epoxy and composite vacuum infusion method, ensuring durability and strength.

New boat company lovers combination of speed, luxury and modern design.

Updated Hunton Yachts collaborates with design studios, for example, with the London Quarterre , and other shipyards to offer cutting-edge solutions along with elegant British style. Thus, the models retain the original body shape developed by the founder of the shipyard.

Ultimate Luxury Yacht: Hunton Yachts H55

Joshua Gray

Bobbi Brown Makeup Set

For the past year, Hunton’s teased us relentlessly about the release of its H55 yacht. And how could anyone not feel hype about this watercraft? It’s the perfect and seamless combination of speed and luxury—something that you’ll almost never find on water. So, if you’re ready to explore everything known about one of the coolest boats ever, continue reading along with us as we take a look at the Hunton Yachts H55!

The Engines: Fulfill your Speed Needs on Water

At the moment, the Hunton yachts H55 promises to be one of the fastest yachts you’ll ever drive. After all, this is the brand known for its race boats. So how could anything go wrong here?

Overall, you’ll get two Man V8-100 engines. And these allow for an incredible top speed of 55 knots. In other words, you’ll be living more than the lux on board this yacht. That speed allows for plenty of fun. Plus, you’ll even get that reliable Jeff Hunton Hull shape. So it’s always a smooth and stable ride at any speed.

Sporty on the Outside, Comfy and Luxurious on the Inside

Again, you can’t hear enough about how this boat combines speed and luxury in one fine package. In fact, it’s almost worth repeating another 20 times seeing as these two worlds hardly ever coexist.

According to the designer, the H55 offers the “power of a classic British car” with “gentlemanly swagger.” We already know how this yacht provides the performance of a British supercar . So let’s jump on board to learn more about this gentlemanly swagger.

As a whole, you’ll get one of the world’s best-designed yachts. Quarterre Design studio even lent a hand with some of the interior as well. So you already know to expect some stellar design.

Starting off in the master suite, you’ll get a pretty sizable room filled with slide doors and wooden panels for that nice modern touch. There’s even a large window to catch some natural rays of sunshine and get some pretty epic views of the water.

There’s also a separate side room that easily transforms into a guest-room should you decide to take some friends or family along for the ride. So that means you could easily fit 4-5 guests on this yacht with you.

Speaking of fun with guests, step out on deck for some super comfortable couches. You can even turn this into a dining area to eat an invigorating breakfast while watching the sunrise. Or make it a romantic dinner by sunset. The options are limitless for setting the scene aboard this yacht. And when you’re done relaxing, there’s plenty of fun to be had on the swim deck.

Be The Captain of Your Own Ship

Overall, Hunton made piloting the H55 one of the easiest tasks ever. So you won’t need to worry about hiring a separate captain. Everything from the digital throttles to the joystick controls will undoubtedly allow you to get wherever you need to go on water.

What’s the Price of the Hunton Yachts H55 and When Can you Get it?

So far, Hunton has yet to unveil a price on this luxury yacht. But you’ll be able to purchase one in the spring of next year. You’ll even get to choose from some personalized options as well. These include a panoramic hardtop and an added Seakart 285 for even more fun.

Final Thoughts

Speed and luxury seamlessly blend aboard the Hunton Yachts H55. In fact, anything you could ever want from a yacht, you’ll find aboard this watercraft. The engines give you more than enough power to reach some incredible speed. Meanwhile, lounging aboard this yacht will offer you one of the most comfortable experiences ever. So there’s plenty to feel hyped about when this watercraft hits the market next year.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography

April 30–june 21, 2003.

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography , an exhibition of 20th-century photographs of Moscow, opens at Columbia University's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and remains on display through Saturday, June 21, 2003.

Moscow has been a powerful magnet for many Russian photographers of the 20th century. Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography presents the work of 31 photographers, whose images have defined the visual experience of Moscow from the 1920s to the present. Diverse in form and strategy, the 90 photographs chosen for the exhibition trace the history of Russian documentary photography and offer insight into individual practices. From Aleksandr Rodchenko's constructivist visions and Evgenii Khaldei's humanist landscapes to Igor Moukhin's scenes of urban spectacle and alienation in the works of Russia's key 20th-century photographers, Moscow ventures beyond the expected image as a site of famous landmarks, architectural treasures and dramatic lifestyles.

Early 20th-century photographers Boris Ignatovich and Arkadii Shaikhet saw themselves in the vanguard of an emerging mass-media culture, defining with their cameras the visual experience of Soviet modernity. For nearly 70 years, Soviet photography was assigned the duty of maintaining the ideological rigidity of the Soviet State. Yet, as examples of the work of Iakov Khalip, Anatolii Egorov, Mikhail Savin, and Mark Markov-Grinberg show, Soviet photographic practices were much more complex than has been previously acknowledged. The works of these photographers remain intensely compelling to a modernist eye.

Contemporary Russian photographers, such as Lev Melikhov, Valerii Stigneev and Sergei Leontiev, engage with the legacy of the Soviet documentary photography. But for them the documentary is a complex and multivalent genre, which incorporates subjectivity, ambiguity and reflexivity and comments on social and cultural issues without losing sight of the position from which that commentary is made. In the recent photographs by Vladimir Kupriyanov, Igor Moukhin, Anna Gorunova and Pakito Infante, the "real" space of Moscow is replaced by an imaginary and optical spaces of virtuality.

The works in the exhibition are on loan from Moscow's Cultural Center Dom, and many are being shown outside Russia for the first time. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Wallach Art Gallery is publishing an illustrated catalogue with a scholarly essay by the exhibition curator, Nadia Michoustina, a Ph.D. candidate in Columbia University's Department of Slavic Languages. The essay presents a nuanced history of Russian photography of the 20th century, and contributes to an interpretation of extraordinary images.
