River Hamble

The River Hamble and the village of Hamble-le-Rice are considered to be the sailing centre in the UK.  It’s a marine surveyor’s Mecca, with over 5000 yachts of all types, shapes and sizes either moored or being dry sailed from here.

No less than four yacht clubs are present on the river; Hamble River SC , The Royal Southern YC , The RAF YC and the Warsash Sailing Club .

The River Hamble boasts five major marinas, with numerous smaller boatyards and river moorings from the Hamble Harbour Master and others.

Hamble Point Marina , which is the southernmost site at the mouth of the Hamble, is undoubtedly the busiest. It has every conceivable service from rigging to GRP repairs, electronic firms and steel welders, adding to the most concentrated area for new vessel sales and brokerage firms in the country.

Port Hamble Marina is a short walk from the village centre and is where you will find the Ancasta brokers and main agent for the Beneteau ranges. To the northern end of the marina is Hamble Yacht Services , which operates dry sailing and has a hoisting capability of up to 80 tonnes and 90’ LOA.

Mercury Marina is further up river in a relatively quiet and unspoiled area and is very popular with cruising yachts.

Swanwick Marina can be found at the upper reaches of the River Hamble. Previously known as Moody’s Marina, it is becoming a major concentration for power yachts. It’s home to the Sunseeker , Fairline and Princess sales offices, plus Clipper Marine for Bavaria and Walton Marine (now Sea Ventures ) for Jeanneau .

Universal Marina situated on the Eastern side of the River Hamble and owned by Premier Marinas is our favourite marina on the river. 

Other smaller boatyards on the River Hamble include the Elephant Boatyard and RK Marine , agents for Volvo Penta, who operate both on the Southern and Northern ends of the river, with the old Stone Pier Yard recently acquired.

1. Marine Surveyors Hamble, Hampshire - Swanick Marina & Boatyard

Swanick Marina is situated on the eastern bank of the River Hamble. The marina has berths for 300 boats and a good boatyard. They offer 'lift and hold for survey', usually over lunch.  They are able to lift and store boats upto 65 tonnes.

Situated on a sheltered bank on the western side of the Hamble River, Deacons has 130 berths afloat, hardstanding space and a crane capable of lifting boats up to 16 tons.

Universal Marina is one of the few remaining independent marinas offering south coast moorings. It has a 250 berths and lifting facilities (formally run by HYS). Situated on the East bank of the River Hamble.

Dear Roger, I must thank you for a very professional report on XXXXX and more so for the time you have taken over and above discussing the various issues with this yacht.

While I appreciated the issues are repairable, the cost of doing so to the correct standard soon mounts up, the turning point in the deal for me, was once I got the vendor to accept the issues reported he would not reduce the price to allow the work to be completed by Darthaven as you recommended, but wanted to repair the yacht himself!   I think this answered the questions of why there were so many issues with this yacht! If he is the marine engineer he reports to be why did he not attend to them before, this then started to raise doubt in my mind about this yacht so in the end I was relived to walk away. Following all this he asked again for your report so he could see what he needed to attend to before the next person had a survey!

I take away from this a very positive learning curve in buying a yacht and again thank you for your assistance

Hi Roger Thank you for all your hard work on that. It is an epic tome! I've spoken to the broker and discussed various ways forward. I'm putting off until Monday a decision on what to do but I got the distinct impression that there could be movement on the price based on proper in-the-water testing of the engine. Morning Roger, I trust you to are up early writing glowing things about Sea Thyme. It was a good few days wasn't it - I learnt a load thank you.   I am off to the boat today to meet the owner and to sign various things.I have completed your contract and find myself thoroughly stitched up again!   I have sent the money. Dear Roger, It occurred to me yesterday that I hadn't contacted you since we spoke or since I received the survey you did on XXXXX in Holland. Having read it through in some detail, I was generally very satisfied with the boat's condition and all that you said about it. I negotiated a hefty discount on the price which I thought was satisfactory and completed payment yesterday. I'm spending time aboard soon attending to some of the vital works, the yard in Brouwershaven are doing the lion's share. With fair winds and a bit of luck we will be bringing her back to her new berth in the UK during the Easter weekend. Hi Roger, Just a short note by way of an update since we last spoke.  We did indeed go ahead with the purchase of Mallard following your endorsement on the vessel.  We have a fortnight to sail her back to our home port, Burnham-on-Crouch, and have plans to visit a number of places around the Solent and the south coast - no fixed plan as of yet and much will depend on weather of course. I wanted to thank you for the survey you undertook for us recently, and to let you know how things are going. We are proceeding with the purchase, with the seller putting in another £15k or so of work to bring the boat up to scratch (full re-rigging, new batteries x10, bilge pump - more than 20 items in all). We have you to thank for that. And with your additional observations and suggestions for remedial work in the coming years, we feel we have a good handle on what is to come.

Good news: we sent the sails off to a local loft for cleaning and inspection - the sails have some grease stains from an over-lubricated mast, and a little Sahara sand staining from sitting in the mast “almost unused since new". Thus with the patching of the stained area, we have sails that the sail loft say are of high quality (for cruising) and fit for "maybe 10 years of careful cruising use". We couldn’t believe our luck!

Yacht Surveyor Costs

We base our yacht surveyor costs and fees on giving you value for money and paying us for the work we do and our insurance costs.  We do not charge VAT.     Travel costs are free for surveys conducted in the Solent including Portsmouth, Chichester, Southampton area.

RIBS, Sports boats and small simple GRP boats with outboard engines or no engines we start at £16 per foot for insurance surveys in the winter.

Single inboard engine GRP motor and sail boats with few systems surveyed ashore only from £16 per foot for insurance surveys in winter.

After this we take into account the length and breadth, the complexity of the boat, her systems, her location and value and quote accordingly for Pre-purchase surveys or consultancy. We will always be fair, taking account time spent working for you at a fair rate.

MCA coding examination – We code through YDSA. Certificate fees are set by them and MCA pre examination advice, preparation and survey is normally charged by the hour but quoted for before hand.

Tonnage –  fees again are set by YDSA

Please note that any Cranes/lift outs, pressure washing etc. is in addition to the above.

When travelling abroad, travel is charged at cost, always quoted in advance.

Lady Lara’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 14 guests overnight in 7 cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 19 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Lady Lara Mega Super Yacht, is a motor yacht built in 2015 by Lürssen in Schacht-Audorf. She is owned by Israeli/Kazakh billionaire Alexander Mashkevitch. With an overall length of 91.00 m (298.56 ft) and a beam of 14.82 m (48.6 ft).

An ultra modern super yacht

Built under codename Orchid, Lady Lara has a full displacement hull, aluminium superstructure and a 14.35 metre beam. Exterior and interior design comes from the boards of Reymond Langton Design, a decision influenced by the desire to create a harmonious balance between spaces inside and out.

Zero speed stabilizers, elevator, beach club, helicopter landing pad on the bow, spa, swimming platform, tender garage with tender, air conditioning, on deck jacuzzi, gym, BBQ, underwater lights.

Her on-board atmosphere is bright, with inviting interior spaces and a subtle selection of light complementary finishes enhancing the open areas. Generous exterior decks offer range of options for guests to enjoy, from sun-drenched, open entertainment areas to more sheltered, intimate formal spaces.

Sweeping, sculpted curves give Lady Lara a feminine elegance and the interior reportedly flows just as sinuously. Lady Lara is a private yacht and following her maiden voyage to Norway, she headed to Florida, the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean islands for the winter season.

Lady Lara features a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules.

This luxury yacht is also fitted with ‘zero speed stabilizers’ which work at anchor, increasing on-board comfort when the yacht is stationary, particularly in rough waters.

Who is alexander mashkevitch.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

In 2010 he was on the Forbes list of billionaires at #287. In 2017, he was on the list at #1098, with a worth of $1.9 billions. Now his worth is 3 billion dollars.

The LADY LARA yacht is a 91m superyacht with a beam of 14.82m and a draft of 4m. The vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines and has a displacement of 2,945 gross tons.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.
