Man charged with arson after early morning yacht club fire, Ocean Springs officials say
Ocean Springs Police charged a man with arson after a fire broke out early Thursday at the Ocean Springs Yacht Club, the city said in a news release.
The fire ignited about 3:30 a.m. The Ocean Springs Fire Department found flames burning on the west exterior of the building at 100 Front Beach Drive. They said no one was inside the yacht club and the fire did not result in injuries.
As the fire department doused the flames, Ocean Springs Police found Cedric Jerome McCullum leaving the property, the release said.
Police arrested McCullum because he had an outstanding arrest warrant from Gautier and said evidence recovered from a Fire Marshal investigation led them to charge McCullum with second-degree arson.
The release did not specify a reason for McCullum’s initial arrest warrant. He is currently being held at the Jackson County jail.
The release also said damage was mostly contained to the outside of the yacht club, with “moderate” smoke damage inside.

Case closed after St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire
ST. ANDREWS, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The fire that destroyed the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club is now reported as accidental and the case was closed.
A Division of Investigative and Forensic Services report stated the fire’s cause was undetermined.
As to where the fire started, the report lists it likely started at or on the floor of the second-floor ballroom area, or the high ceiling level of the first floor, directly below the ballroom.
However, due to extreme safety concerns, they could not reach the area because the floor was burned away, and could not determine the cause.
After speaking with neighbors and checking out nearby cameras, detectives did not find suspicious activity.
The case was closed due to insufficient evidence and there are no further leads.

St. Andrews Yacht Club is in the process of progress
P ANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club went up in flames back in November, this week the fire was reported to be accidental and the case is closed. Now yacht club members are figuring out their next steps.
St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club members are picking up the pieces and looking toward the future.
“The yacht club burned down November 12th back in 2023,” said Michael Wynn, St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club Commodore.
With the investigation into the fire now closed they are working on plans to rebuild.
“The membership here and as well as our community partnership have been working tirelessly to try and rebuild the club for the benefit of our community and our membership,” said Wynn.
The St Andrews Bay Yacht Club is in the process of progress, the club’s commodore says they are in the works of getting back on their feet from the fire. One of the ways they are doing so is by extending onto their sailing center.
“Since day one we’ve been dedicated to making sure that our staff have a place to come back to work and our loyal members who have been here for generations have a place where they can come enjoy,” said Wynn.
Wynn says what’s left of the yacht club will soon be torn down.
“We are hoping to unveil what the future is going to look like this summer,” said Wynn.
As they rebuild the city is making improvements in the area too. Earlier this year, we reported Panama City fire officials faced challenges extinguishing the flames due to nearby fire hydrants being out.
City leaders say they are in the process of fixing that problem.
“We have almost 2000 hydrants around the city,” said Jonathan Hayes, City manager of Panama City. “You know back at the end of last year around November we had 80 to 85 that were out. By the end of year, we [have] gotten that down to the low 70s and as of today we have around 53 or 52 that are out right now we have 53 out. hydrants being out is a normal part of infrastructure in any city or county.”
As the city addresses the hydrants, yacht club members look forward to new plans, and a new building, to celebrate in the future.
Club members say there is no final date for when the new club will be built, however, they are working as fast as they can.
Ocean Springs Yacht Club holds season’s first regatta
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) - Sunday, the Ocean Springs Yacht Club hosted its first regatta of the season.
Dozens of people hopped in their boats and hit the water for the Slip-to-Ship-themed competition. It was a 14 mile race from the yacht club to Deer Island — about a 2 to 3 hour route.
“I’m so excited about this event because we have boats from like everywhere like Texas come in,” said OS Yacht Club fleet captain and sail instructor Amanda Romano. “We have about 28 boats registered for this regatta. We’ve had great weather; I mean, last year, the wind died on us and some people were getting towed in, getting in home after dark, but everybody made it back safely this time.”
The first leg of the competition, a race back to shore from Ship Island, was held on Saturday.
