While some explorer yacht builders use steel for their hull, some believe aluminum may be thebetter choice in the case of weight reduction, higher performance speed, better fuel consumption and seaworthiness.

The expedition yacht requires lots of crew space. Expert crew members are typically needed for long-range expeditions. An excellent example - the 26 meter Octopus, is well-known as the world’s largest explorer yacht and boasts an enormous crew of 50! Want to test if a yacht is, indeed, an expedition yacht, then just zero in on the details of her maximum cruising range which translates to the distance it can travel without making a fuel stop. The majority of the yachts 40 meters and up usually have a transatlantic cruising range of around 3,000 nautical miles, but there are some exceptional expedition builds are set up to have an even longer range. And her long distance speed ranks in between 10 to 12 knots.” Ice, the extraordinary 90 meter Lürssen yacht is a prime example being able to cruise up to 6,000 nautical miles at 15 knots and never needing to make a fuel stop!

These are the bluewater, transoceanic passagemakers that can be found circling the globe safely, efficiently, and comfortably. Typically full displacement vessels large enough to carry thousands of gallons of fuel and water, these vessels can cruise at speeds up to 10 knots in most seaways and remain untethered to shoreside facilities for months at a time. They are rugged and supremely capable. The best of this breed come from the commercial and military worlds. Inspect the size and quality of the gear on an expedition yacht and that will be obvious.

These are not production boats, and no two yachts are the same. Each is a custom or semi-custom yacht tailored to the desires and cruising plans of its owners.

Most of these yachts have a single diesel engine in an engine room that is central to the design of the boat, with outstanding access to machinery and systems. Multiple generators supply electrical and hydraulic power as needed, much like a small ship. 

The engineering that goes into expedition yachts eliminates single points of failure in all systems, and redundancy is factored into all critical areas. Self-sufficiency is also a key element of the design spiral of an expedition yacht. Unlike most other categories of cruising yachts, the living space elements of the best yachts in this category, such as galley and staterooms, are secondary to the engine room where supreme reliability and accessibility of the machinery and systems is first and foremost.

As a result, most expedition yachts use commercial grade, hydraulic systems for windlass, bow and stern thrusters, stabilizers, and tender cranes for the ultimate performance. All gear is oversized and capable of operating in extreme conditions.

If a trawler is considered an SUV vehicle, think of an expedition yachts as an Earth Roamer, a crossover between a luxury yacht and research vessel. In fact, some expedition yachts do conduct research when they go on a long cruise to remote areas or during a circumnavigation, on marine life, health of reef ecosystems, and the impacts of climate change.

The layout includes a fully outfitted pilothouse like a ship’s bridge, offering the safest place to operate the vessel at sea. The latest and best in communications and navigation electronics are located in the pilothouse, including Class A AIS transponders, satellite phone, and commercial radars. Everything, in fact, that allows the owners to safely remain at sea, or meander through island chains, with enough provisions, fuel, and water to travel non-stop halfway or more around the world.

The expedition yacht is fully insulated to operate in both tropical and extreme latitudes, where it can remain for months. Larger yachts will have a captain and crew, but with today’s technology and systems, owner-operated yachts are found up to 85 feet or so. All expedition yachts are stabilized for comfort at sea.

Builders use steel, aluminum, or fiberglass to build these yachts, and all are classified for open ocean, and many rated for ice, for high latitude exploration.

Luxury accommodations are typically two or three staterooms for owner operated vessels, or more, depending on size, as larger yachts will have crew quarters. Living spaces are well appointed for full-time living aboard with all appliances, entertainment systems, and comforts of home. The galley is most often nicer than one would expect in a luxury townhouse.

These boats can cruise exotic places with little or no outside support, so are equipped with dive compressors and all the water toys and other equipment to explore reefs, uninhabited islands, as well as enjoy the most luxurious European marinas in the Mediterranean. Wreck diving in Truk Lagoon, watching glaciers in Alaska and Greenland, and following in Shackleton’s footsteps are all within the mission statement of the expedition yacht. 

Some of the larger yachts in this category carry multiple tenders and the largest expedition yachts may also carry large express boats and even a helicopter for scouting ahead for anchorages or crew transfer. 

For adventure that is hard to replicate elsewhere on this planet, while providing the ultimate in luxury living, expedition yachts represent the highest level of comfort, capability, and self-sufficiency.

1962 Romsdal 100 Expedition The name ROMSDAL has always been synonymous with North Sea trawlers, yachts built for research, and strong North Sea fishing boats.  Originally built in 1962 as a research vessel, DISCOVERY underwent a complete rebuild and refit from 1998-2000.  The refit was massive and reported costs exceeded 12 million dollars.   DISCOVERY is an esthetically pleasing yacht that shows outstanding workmanship and stunning craftsmanship throughout the yacht.   The interior wood is exquisite and the layout is perfect for luxurious accommodations. Refit to be a gentlemans expedition yacht the hull was flared and painted with Sterling Flag Blue paint. During the refit a new rolled aluminum superstructure was built and installed using bimetal transition inserts.  The superstructure is white.  Teak trim was added producing the true yacht finish one would expect.  The decks were covered with teak and show little wear.  The interior design and layout was designed by an architect while the interior workmanship was overseen by an interior designer.  The results are simply stunning.  With the finest craftsmanship available, the interior has varnished mahogany wood work and trim, madronal burl woodwork and trim, granite, marble, jade, and exquisite fabrics. DISCOVERY is now available as the owner has finished cruising and is concentrating on business ventures.  At this time, DISCOVERY needs exterior paint and some interior soft good rejuvenation to be as spectacular as she once was.  Easy to see in Portsmouth. 1995 Real Ships Island Expedition This 1995/2012 Real Ships was designed by Jay Benford Design Group of Easton, Maryland and fabricated at Custom Steel Boats of Merritt, NC, located on the Bay River in North Carolina. Jay Benford Design has been in business since 1969 and is a highly regarded Naval Architect. Custom Steel Boats has been a family owned, multi-generational business since 1981 and is well known for both commercial and recreational steel and aluminum construction. Additionally, the 8' hull extension completed in 2012 was accomplished with design drawings from Jay Benford Design Group with the goal of enhancing their original design while maintaining the vessels unique profile.  For the past twelve years, IMPERVIOUS has been the private yacht belonging to the owner of a successful marine repair facility in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Impervious features all the luxury and modernization of a new boat.  After initially buying the vessel and cruising for two years, the owner knew exactly what he wanted to make "Impervious" the perfect "Island Expedition" vessel. This was accomplished over a 4-year refit period completed in 2012 with the hull extended 8'. During that time the owner continued using the boat and subsequently upgrading systems to improve performance and functionality with an emphasis on serviceability and ease of maintenance.  IMPERVIOUS is unique in its design and layout with multiple decks providing the space of a much larger yacht.  This spacious vessel is simple to own and operate for a yacht of this size and class.  From the bilges to the boat deck fore to aft this boat shows like new. The refit included installation of a second generator, upgrading stabilizers, re-engineering the exhaust system, new electronics suite with NMEA 2000 integration to original analog system, new watermaker, aft deck refit with integrated fiberglass seating with storage underneath and expanded barbecue grill and rotisserie area. The Salon and Pilothouse had new "African Teak" wood floors installed and "New England Beadboard" ceiling with improved LED lighting. The laundry facility was expanded and crews quarters improved, all new fresh water system, batteries upgraded to AGM type.The galley was modernized with new cabinets, counter surfaces, appliances, and improved seating. Also completed in 2012 was painting the entire hull and superstructure, and most significantly, the 8 foot hull extension from designs provided by the original architect, Jay Benford, which added another 500 gallons of fuel capacity. This 8 foot hull extension created a very spacious aft deck entertainment area and very easy access to the now enormous lower aft deck via a custom stainless steel staircase. The present owner tows a 26' Mako center console when traveling the Bahamas and this lower aft deck created by the hull extension makes towing, rafting the tender

Rebuilt 46m hybrid-propulsion expedition yacht Scintilla Maris joins market

The 45.6-metre "full-custom" expedition yacht Scintilla Maris has joined the market with Eleonora Pitasso of Burgess.

Originally an ocean-going trawler, built in 1988, she was rebuilt in the Netherlands by Damen Maaskant and delivered in 2023. A finalist in the upcoming World Superyacht Awards 2024, she is described by the broker as "like new", having been stripped down to bare steel during the four-year project.

Scintilla Maris’ new interior is by Vripack while naval architecture and exterior design is by Damen Maaskant. The hull is constructed of thickened steel and the superstructure of aluminium.

Accommodation is for 10 guests in five cabins and there are quarters for a crew of nine. All cabins are positioned on the lower deck, with four guest cabins forward and a full-beam owner’s cabin aft featuring huge ceiling heights and large skylights, bringing in plenty of natural light.

The main deck has a welcoming open galley, conceived "as a relaxed gathering space for meals and post-exploration lounging". Forward, the main deck lounge provides an inviting seating area for guests with views ahead. Midships on the main deck the hull plating was "reconfigured to provide direct access to the water" on both port and starboard sides, "giving guests an intimate connection with the ocean and ease of access to and from the water".

Up on the bridge deck is an intimate lounge with U-shaped seating and direct access to the wheelhouse. The completely reconfigured bridge has been fully modernised and serves as both a technical operating space and a comfortable place for guest observation and involvement during long cruises. There is a heated Portuguese bridge forward of the wheelhouse with a "thermostatic seating area" that uses heat recovered from the generators, and aft there are teak-laid banquettes facing fore and aft. Up on the sun deck is an al fresco dining area complete with barbecue station and full-service bar.

The RINA-classed, 499GT explorer yacht for sale is powered by a single 2,000hp Marelli hybrid-electric propulsion installed to comply with Tier-III regulations, reducing the yacht’s footprint and minimising noise and vibration. She has an ocean-straddling range of 9,000 nautical miles at 9 knots.

Scintilla Maris is asking €19,250,000 and lying in the Netherlands.
