CRN Celebrates its 60th Anniversary This Year. Here are Robb Report's 10 Favorites.

Sanzio Nicolini, the founder of superyacht builder CRN, was a visionary who brought a daring energy to boat building. He pursued collaborations with the likes of other boating luminaries such as Carlo Riva, Jon Bannenberg, and Alberto Pinto to produce landmark yachts that showcased innovative design and pushed the boundaries of technology.

These include Awal , the first yacht to feature a touch-and-go helipad; Atlante , which echoed the multipurpose full-beam design found on navy vessels; and, more recently, the 197-foot M/Y 141 with a Nuvolari Lenard design that embodies the aerodynamic lines of an Italian sports car. In 1999, CRN merged with the Ferretti Group. Today, celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Ancona-based yard maintains its reputation for building creative, owner-focused yachts with authentic technical prowess.

Here are our 10 favorites from the past six decades.

SuperConero Series, 1986

crn yacht wikipedia

CRN’s SuperConero was a landmark series of 75.5-foot boats that signaled the arrival of CRN as a prestige yacht builder. The model drew a line in the sand for the design and build quality of all of CRN’s future yachts, remaining a source of inspiration even half a century later in the form of the only 164-foot model, Latona . Delivered in 2018, Latona carries all the modern CRN hallmarks, from a beach club at the stern and a balcony that can be used when cruising to a floodable tender garage and a terrace over the sea.

‘Fath Al Khair,’ 1978

crn yacht wikipedia

The 155-foot Fath Al Khair was the first CRN to exceed 147 feet. Built for the Emir of Qatar, it reflected the owner’s insatiable appetite for ever-larger yachts in what was becoming an increasingly sophisticated market. Fath Al Khair also highlights the quirky “bow chine” design that CRN became known for in the 70s. Inspired by fishing boats, it assured guest safety when cruising while providing additional room for the crew.

‘F100,’ 1983

crn yacht wikipedia

Thirty years ahead of its time, F100 was a game changer for the industry. Commissioned by Gianni Agnelli, the then-head of Fiat Group, it was the first true explorer yacht in the pleasure-boating world. It was also the first to have floating rubber supports that served as a form of soundproofing (again, pre-dating the noise-reduction technology developed 20 years later), and the first yacht of its size to have a touch-and-go helipad on the upper deck. The final flourish was a “beauty line” traced in pure gold under the rubbing strake from bow to stern, which gave an aesthetic flourish.

‘Il Vagabondo,’ 1986

crn yacht wikipedia

Built for Saudi Arabian Sheikh Hassan Enany in 1986, the 213-foot Il Vagabondo is an early Terence Disdale design with a contemporary feel. The British designer penned the boat’s exterior and interior, which included the first guest elevator aboard a yacht. Il Vagabondo also highlighted CRN’s expertise in building custom steel-hulled yachts, with the naval architecture done in-house.

‘Vanina,’ 1986

crn yacht wikipedia

The full-custom yachting phenomenon materialized in the 1980s when owners began looking to designers for one-off designs. Sensing this shift, Sanzio Nicolini collaborated with designer luminaries, such as Jon Bannenberg, considered the first modern yacht designer. The London designer completed a trio of custom designs for three Greek brothers, one of which was Vanina. At 108 feet in length, the yacht had features that the owner specifically requested, such as a mid-deck children’s room made of pine as well as an impressive 3,000 nautical mile range.

‘Maraya,’ 2007

crn yacht wikipedia

It was in the late 90s when CRN first partnered with Rome-based Zuccon International Project, but it wasn’t until the 177-foot Maraya , delivered in 2007, that the world sat up and took notice of the partnership. Now a mainstay in yachting, Maraya was the first boat to have an owner’s suite with a private terrace that opened out over the sea. Providing the perfect spot for a breakfast coffee, the master suite balcony is complemented by a private office and a Zen-like en suite.

‘J’Ade,’ 2012

crn yacht wikipedia

J’Ade is a 197-foot transatlantic yacht delivered by CRN in 2012. It was distinguished by having the first floodable garage on a yacht of its size. The hydraulically operated bay gave the owner easy access to the yacht’s 26-foot Riva Iseo, without the need for a tender lift area. When required, the multifunctional space dries out in a quick three minutes to transform into a beach club terrace with access to a saltwater pool.

‘Chopi Chopi,’ 2013

crn yacht wikipedia

When most yacht lovers hear the name CRN, they automatically think Chopi Chopi . The 262-footer remains the largest yacht to come out of the Ancona yard, even 10 years after its delivery. Personalized from bow to stern for a highly experienced owner and his family, the yacht has a dedicated owner’s deck with a 2,100-square-foot private apartment connected to a stern terrace, a helipad for a three-ton helicopter, and a customized electronics system on the bridge with all the route-planning and navigation systems required. Oh, there’s a full entertainment system for the guests, too.

‘Voice,’ 2020

crn yacht wikipedia

The 203-foot Voice is a head-turning yacht designed by long-time CRN collaborator Nuvolari Lenard. The yacht’s contoured external lines and bold bespoke colors reflect the strong personality of the owner. As the first CRN to comply with the new IMO Tier III requirements, which slashed nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust emissions by 70 percent, Voice was hailed as a step toward more sustainable yachting for the Italian builder.

‘Rio,’ 2022

crn yacht wikipedia

Yachting in the 21st century pivots around indoor/outdoor connectivity and flexible living spaces. The full-custom 204-foot Rio , which launched at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, makes the most of both aspects. Large internal and external living areas seamlessly blend. Modular furniture can be moved around to create more room for guests or impromptu dance floors. The sky lounge serves as a private owner’s salon but is equally well suited to soirées for all 12 guests. All guest areas, including two full-beam VIPs, a wellness lounge, a beach club, a pool, and a cinema, come equipped with smart-automation technology to personalize the electronics.

CRN

CRN: 60 years on the wave of success

Since beginning operations in 1963 CRN has made the cutting-edge its underlying philosophy. The founder Sanzio Nicolini was a great yacht enthusiast and visionary entrepreneur, one of those men with a talent for anticipating and creating trends. He was the first to use metal construction, moving on from fishing boats to fast personnel transport craft and then pleasure yachts. ( Here all our posts about CRN )

CRN

The yard is based in Ancona, a strategically-located maritime hub and the cradle of a naval tradition that means the yard can always draw on a highly-skilled workforce. Thanks to these advantages CRN  soon became a go-to location for the European pleasure sailing market. Its success was also driven by strategic collaborations, further evidence of Nicolini’s far-sightedness and business acumen.

CRN

But CRN was also the first brand to make bespoke yachts, craft that reflect the owner’s specifications – take, for example, Numptia and its rounded stern or Gianni Agnelli’s F100. Now the journey taken by an owner begins with a blank sheet, with the yard starting the production process by listening carefully to the owner and forming a clear picture of what he or she wants from their yacht. A general plan is then drawn up, and this became the starting point for work on the project, with elements defined and reshaped until the owner’s requests were made real.

CRN

Another of the yard’s strengths is its commitment to minimising the environmental impact of its yachts and production processes – in 2021 it launched an initiative that led to the publication of the Ferretti Group’s first Sustainability Report, a totally new development in the Italian yacht-building industry. Now CRN has become the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard, which covers 80,000 square metres and can handle the construction of yachts up to 90 metres in length.  The crew building was recently refurbished and in 2023 the new office building on via Enrico Mattei will soon be completed. The centre for owners will be opened in 2024.

CRN

CRN 1963 – 1972

When CRN was founded in 1963 Sanzio Nicolini began constructing steel and alumnium craft. This was a time when wood was the dominant material and metal builds were much less common. He achieved immediate success, especially among a demanding client base in Italy, the Middle East, the Cote d’Azur and Greece.

CRN

In the space of five years the yard’s yachts grew in length from 14 to 38 metres, and 1967 saw the launch of the first SuperConero, a 23-metre model with iconic, immediately recognisable lines. It was to mark a turning point in international yacht design and become a benchmark for yachts to come, even inspiring the 50-metre Latona, launched in 2018.

CRN

During a period of economic growth and when companies were often family-run or had a rather ad-hoc management set-up, CRN’s corporate structure was well ahead of its time. Responsibilities and procedures were strictly codified and integrated. The technical office worked in tandem with the fitting out department and the drawing office, where technicians produced full-scale drawings of the entire yacht, as well as the workshop where the pieces were prepared and cut out.

CRN

Then there were the mechanics and engineers who handled the engine parts, the fitters who did all the hydraulic pipe work and finally the joiners who saw to all the exterior fittings and decks, which were positioned strip by strip using 5 cm teak laths that had to flex to match the yacht’s movements. This took many days of work.

CRN

The team was completed by cabinetmakers, carpenters and specialist workers who created and fitted out the interiors. This decade also saw the launch of yachts like the 21-metre Papo of 1966, the 21.6-metre New Caravelle, the Micoperi line navettes and Bagheera, a 38.40-metre steel and aluminium yacht that set the length record for the time and enabled CRN to become one of the world’s most important superyacht builders.

CRN

1973 – 1982

The 1970s are remembered for the meeting of Sanzio Nicolini with Carlo Riva of the yard that bears his name. Riva was looking for someone to build a series of large steel motoryachts, and CRN was the Italian leader in this field.

CRN

The partnership between the two yards led to the construction of two craft that have gone down in yacht history – Marco Polo, inspired by the SuperConero, and Vespucci. This is also when one of the distinctive features of all CRN yachts first made its appearance – their recognisability, an important factor in a market that was expanding rapidly  and where a distinctive look was a crucial element in success. This process had already begun with the SuperConero line, which in the 1970s evolved to boast very well-defined lines.

CRN

At this time all CRN yachts had an unusual bow chine, inspired by fishing boats and making them instantly recognisable. This bow shape was chosen for greater safety even in rough seas, and provided more space for the crew area, but it became the brand’s stylistic trademark. Some of the most famous yachts from these years are Varmar, a 32.40 metre designed by Jon Bannenber and launched in 1982, the 31-metre Gazzella of 1974, the 35-metre Moneikos of 1976, the Caribe III of 1979 and the Santa Cruz Ters, a 26-metre yacht from the same year.

CRN

Not forgetting the 47-metre Awal, which was the first pleasure yacht to boast a touch-and-go helipad on the main deck. However, the yacht that made the biggest splash was the Fath Al Khair, a 47.2 metre launched in 1978 for the Emir of Quatar and created to his incredible specifications. It enabled CRN to demonstrate its ability to build large yachts and ushered in a period of growth in terms of size that would eventually result in today’s 85-metre designs.

CRN

CRN 1983 – 1992

The 1980s were a key period for the yard. The sartorial aspect of CRN yachts took clear shape and the owner became the main player in the entire construction process. This was also the period of the collaboration with the Cantiere Morini (acquired in 2002), George Nicholson and great names in yacht design like Jon Bannenberg, Gerhard Gilgenast, Paola Smith, Terence Disdale, Dilday, Alberto Pinto and Aldo Cichero.

CRN

This was also, of course, when Gianni Agnelli’s F110 made its appearance, one of the craft that wrote yachting history. All this propelled CRN into the international spotlight, enabling the yard to win larger and larger contracts for bespoke yachts. The portfolio of 1980s masterpieces includes those designed by Jon Bannenberg – the 32.80-metre Vanina of 1986 and the 52.50-metre Akitou of 1983 that set a new length record for CRN, plus, of course, Vagabondo, the 61,2 metre of 1986 penned by Terence Disdale.

CRN

But the key year of the decade was 1983, with the launch of the F100. Commissioned by Gianni Agnelli, this yacht can be regarded as the forerunner of the Explorer that are so on-trend at the moment. The F100 was remarkable not only for the identity of its owner but also its futuristic systems and equipment. The 32.8-metre craft, designed by Gerhard Gilgenast, had a minimal look, its only flourish a pure gold beauty line running from bow to stern beneath the rubbing strake.

CRN

It was designed for extended cruising in all weather conditions and at all latitudes, its clean lines concealing a technological heart that opened the way to a long series of innovative developments in the yacht-building industry. It was the first yacht to feature floating rubber supports to eliminate noise, the first 33-metre to boast a heliport and the first yacht with anti-vibration tiles to dampen engine vibration. In short, a masterpiece of naval engineering that CRN created in collaboration with a team of experts from NASA.

CRN

1993 – 2002

The Gulf War had profound repercussions in the early 1990s, especially for companies like CRN that had many clients in the eastern Mediterranean. The yard decided to leverage its know-how and diversify, expanding its operations into refitting and commercial products. Its yachts grew larger and it began to offer enhanced client care.

CRN

And at a time when series yacht production was increasing, CRN yachts became thoroughbred bespoke objects. This is the period of the collaboration with Walter Franchini – together with the yard he designed the lovely Aqualibrum, the 40-metre craft from 1994. Working with Terence Disdale led to the 65-metre Awal II, which set a new length record, and the 50-metre Sahab IV, for which he designed the interiors.

CRN

The 50-metre Pestifer and the 60-metre Numptia – with its famous round stern, Numptia became a bespoke yacht icon- The three had all interiors by François Zuretti. Numptia was also constructed at a time of a transformation that would shape CRN’s destiny. In 1999 the yard joined the Ferretti Group, which became one of the main international players in pleasure yacht design and construction, adding to a roster of well-known names that included Custom Line, Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Itama and Mochi, with Wally being added in Wally nel 2019.

CRN

The CRN yard was the missing piece of the puzzle, completing the group’s profile and enhancing its versatility. In 2001 CRN and Custom Line created the maritime hub for Ferretti Group super and megayachts in Ancona. This became the location for the construction of CRN’s steel and aluminium yachts and the entire composite range of CRN as well as the Custom Line models.

CRN

The first yacht of the new era was Magnifica, a 43-metre by Nuvolari Lenard. The following year saw the acquisition of Cantiere Navale Morini. The yard brought significant added value to CRN and the addition of its premises meant that the superyacht hub now covered a total of 80,000 square metres.

CRN

CRN 2003 – 2012

The increase in size of the production hub created by the acquisition of Cantiere Morini led to a proportional rise in CRN’s production and fame, with five launches in the space of a year. Kooilust Mare and Saramour were launched in 2003 and 2005.

CRN

This pair of 43-metre yachts designed by  Nuvolari Lenard marked an important stage in the CRN story – although they were bespoke yachts they used the same naval platform as Magnifica, which provided inspiration for them both. This not insignificant detail revolutionised the entire production process.

CRN

Using existing platforms provides construction flexibility, facilitates work planning and has a decisive impact on production, testing and delivery times, as well as offering owners a more reliable structure. This period also marked the launch of the collaboration with Zuccon International Project, which designed the 54-metre Ability from 2004, the first with the open stern.

CRN

Laid out over five decks, it has vertical windows and an imposing presence that was to become the CRN brand’s calling card. Less than a year later came Maraya, the 54-metre that set another record as the first yacht to have opening terraces overlooking the sea.

CRN

The collaboration with Rome-based studio resulted in the construction of six more craft that have come to be regarded as yacht-building masterpieces of the noughties, the 60-metre Givi, the 57-metre Romance, the 60-metre Tacanuyaso, Blue Eyes, which introduced the era of the beach club, Mimtee and Darling Danama, the first yacht to feature an active noise-abatement system.

CRN

Five large craft in less than four years, proof of the success of the naval platform system. In 2010 a new length record was set with the launch of the 72-metre Azteca designed by Nuvolari Lenard. As well as seeing growth in yacht lengths, this decade was marked by two more interesting developments – the first was the launch of construction on thirteen composite, six 40-metre CRN 128s and seven 43-metre CRN Navettes. The second important event the Ferretti Group’s acquisition by SHIG-Weichai group.

CRN

2013 – 2023

The first large yacht after the SHIG-Weichai Group’s entry as majority shareholder was J’Ade, a 60-metre yacht designed by Zuccon International Project. It features cutting edge design and a revolutionary extendable garage, something never seen before on a 60-metre model. A technical space on board this model has been entirely redesigned to become an unusual living area.

CRN

In 2013 it was the turn of the 80-metre Chopi Chopi, the yard’s flagship. For the first time it offered on board the MyConcierge staff call system.

CRN

Managed in a simple, immediate way through iPads it makes it possible to interact directly with crew members and access a wide menu of services. Both craft embody CRN’s design and construction excellence and the yard’s ability to build genuinely custom projects.

CRN

A year later in 2014 two more designs marked the beginning of CRN’s contemporary story – the first was the 60-metre Saramour, a yacht that can best be described as a floating art gallery, designed by Francesco Paszkowski.

CRN

The interiors, to showcase works of art from the owner’s collection. The 73-metre Yalla from 2014, on the other hand, launched a collaboration with Omega Architects and was the first vessel to be built on the new 12.5-metre beam naval platform.

CRN

The following year saw the launch of the Atlante, a 55-metre model by Nuvolari Lenard that re-invented the layout concept. The main deck, in fact, is a versatile open area that can be transformed from tender garage into a lounge.

CRN

The yachts launched in the ensuing years trace the recent story of the CRN yard – Cloud 9, a 74-metre with interiors by Andrew Winch and Latona, a 50-metre by the Zuccon International Project, which like the 79-metre Mimtee, with interiors by Laura Sessa, threatened to rob Chopi Chopi of its flagship status.

CRN

Plus, of course, Voice, Rio and Ciao, all of which provide clear evidencxe of CRN’s expertise and reveal glimpses of a future combining sustainability, far-sightedness and setting new trends.

Inside CRN Shipyard: Bespoke Craftsmanship

crn yacht wikipedia

Over the years, the three letters CRN would become a symbol of prestige, luxury and elegance crafted in the Ancona marina and exported all over the world

It was Sanzio Nicolini, a Marche-based entrepreneur with a passion for the sea, who founded Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali in 1963. In six decades, CRN has revolutionized the nautical world with its far-sighted innovations and successes. The yard brought in the most experienced craftspeople and the top international yacht designers from the start, creating an array of seagoing gems and adding memorable pages to the annals of Italy’s modern industrial history.

crn yacht wikipedia

True to its strong values and mission, the shipyard has always risen to even the most demanding challenges, launching over 400 vessels that still sail the waves today, bringing fine Italian manufacturing and design to the waters of the world.

In 1963, Sanzio Nicolini began to build steel and aluminium yachts in Ancona, a first clear sign of the yard’s avant-garde spirit. In those days, wood was the preferred material, and Nicolini’s choice was uncommon. But in a very prolific start, 32 yachts, ranged from 15 to 20 metres in length, sporting an instantly recognisable design, were built in less than a decade, including the first in an iconic line of 23-metre yachts, the SuperConero. Honourable mention also goes 1969’s Bagheera – the yard’s first pleasure vessel of over 38 metres.

Yachting CRN Voice: Superyacht With Personality

The 1970s were the years of the partnership between Sanzio Nicolini and Carlo Riva . The result was seven historic boats: five Marco Polos, inspired by the SuperConero, and two Vespuccis, one of which became Carlo Riva’s personal yacht. The collaboration between the two great innovators was a key moment for their companies and for the Italian and international pleasure boating industry as a whole.

In the 1980s an order arrived from a passionate owner with highly sophisticated tastes, none other than the head of Fiat Group Gianni Agnelli, the ‘Avvocato’. The F100 was the first true explorer yacht in the pleasure boating world. Designed for long voyages in all weathers, her minimalist lines are far removed from the classic ideas of luxury, so much so that she has been described as almost austere.

crn yacht wikipedia

In 1999, the CRN shipyard was purchased by the Ferretti Group. The first step of this new phase of CRN was the project Magnifica, a splendid 43 metre megayacht designed by Nuvolari & Lenard. CRN acquired the Mario Morini shipyard in 2002, which, with its fleet of 280 ships built, added value thanks to its expertise in steel construction.

This period also saw the beginning of a collaboration with the Zuccon International Project. The first result is the 54-metre Ability, with four decks, vertical glazing, large interior volumes and an imposing appearance that will become CRN’s trademark. In the second half of the decade, the two composite superyacht lines were born: 40-metre CRN Custom Line 128 and 43-metre CRN Navetta 43.

CRN J'Ade

In 2012, the Ferretti Group was acquired by SHIG-Weichai Group, which became the majority shareholder, securing a 75 percent share of the entire Group.

In recent years, several symbolic yachts have been launched for the shipyard, starting with J’Ade (60 metres), revolutionary for the design of the superstructure, for the innovations in the interiors and for the first floodable garage, Chopi Chopi, the 80-metre flagship of the fleet, became the largest yacht ever built in CRN’s entire history,

Saramour (61 metres) a true ‘floating art gallery’ characterised by extremely clean and streamlined lines, and Yalla (73 metres), a design icon, as well as the first vessel to be produced by CRN on the new 12.50-metre wide naval platform.

Crn Atlante Yacht Cruising 01

The decade continues with Atlante , a 55-metre superyacht that stands out for its excellent design of spaces; Eight (46 metres) that marks a very important moment because it represents the first refit in the shipyard’s history; CLOUD 9 (74 metres) which is a spectacular and impressive combination of technical expertise and cutting-edge design; Latona (50 metres) which encompasses all the most important avant-garde and design solutions developed by CRN, including the balcony that can also be used while sailing, the terrace overlooking the sea that can be opened and enjoyed at anchor, the beach club at the stern and the floodable garage for the tender for the first time on a 50-metre; and Mimtee, a 79-metre ‘giant’ with sleek forms, well defined by the soft lines of the hull.

CRN Vioce exterior

Voice is the protagonist in 2020: an icon of contemporaneity with an unmistakably Italian imprint that stands out for its aerodynamic exterior lines and bold bespoke colours. Three yachts followed in 2022: RIO , 62 metres, a perfect blend of creativity, quality and tailoring, with a distinct sporty personality; CIAO , 52 metres built entirely in aluminium, which has a strongly social soul and places the exteriors at the centre and CRN M/Y 141 , a unique 60 meters project that, at the Owner’s request, had to arouse amazement and wonder in his guests, starting from the aerodynamic, taut, fluid and powerful external lines that recall the ideas of speed and fluidity, typical of an automotive project.

The continuous search for unrepeatable design solutions is one of the hallmarks of the shipyard, which accompanies CRN’s sixty-year history step by step and will accompany the next ones to come.

CRN Releases “Comfortably Numb” Details

  • By Yachting Staff

CRN Comfortably Numb

CRN , a brand that is part of the Ferretti Group in Italy, has just released details about the 198-foot custom yacht Comfortably Numb .

The yacht, which was delivered in December 2022, is a fully custom aluminum build. Its design, naval architecture, engineering and construction were all handled at the Ancona Superyacht Yard.

“The shipyard’s design and build quality blends admirably with the creativity of Italian architects Nuvolari Lenard, who developed the concept for the exterior styling and interiors,” according to CRN’s team. “The result is a totally bespoke, handcrafted ship with spaces designed to offer a fantastic cruising experience, perfect for an owner family who enjoy spending long periods on board.”

CRN says the owners’ brief called for a high-performance displacement yacht. Comfortably Numb has a reduced draft and in-line propellers for cruising in the Caribbean’s shallower areas. CRN says it also developed “a system of extremely precise strain gauges to constantly monitor the vessel’s weight and center of gravity via Wi-Fi,” and the yard used lightweight cork during the application and leveling of the teak decking.

The two MTU 20V 4000 M93L engines were the first to be fitted on a CRN yacht. They are combined with a Selective Catalytic Reduction system for a reported top speed of more than 25 knots and a cruising speed of 22.5 knots. The yacht meets IMO Tier III standards. According to CRN, there’s a reduction of up to 70 percent in harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides in the engine exhaust.

Inside, the owners wanted “generous ceiling heights” with light-filled, sole-to-ceiling windows. The yacht’s gross tonnage is 1,114 with five decks, and accommodations for 12 guests. There also are quarters for 13 crew.

Since the delivery of Comfortably Numb , CRN has also launched the 237-footer known as M/Y 179. That steel-hull yacht, delivered in 2023, has a Nuvolari Lenard interior with exteriors by Valicelli Design. CRN was responsible for the naval architecture.

When did the Ancona Superyacht Yard’s operational headquarters officially open? In December 2023. The headquarters spans more than 45,200 square feet for a technical office and space for project managers, architects, logistics specialists and more. The shipyard overall totals more than 860,000 square feet and can handle construction on yachts as large as 295 feet. CRN’s yachts are built there, along with Custom Line yachts, larger Riva yachts and the Pershing 140 .

CRN celebrates 60th anniversary

  • October 6, 2023

The historical heart of the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, CRN is celebrating 60 years and over 400 yachts built since Sanzio Nicolini founded Costruzioni e Riparazioni in 1963.

The Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona

For a shipyard celebrating its 60th anniversary, CRN isn’t giving itself much time to celebrate, despite a special pavilion at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. Founded in Ancona in 1963 and the historic heart and soul of what has been known as the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard since 2019, CRN is one of the world’s leading builders of superyachts up to 90m.

Last year, CRN staged three spectacular launches, starting with the 62m Rio (click for Review, Issue 67) then the 52m all-aluminium Ciao , both designed by Dutch studio Omega Architects and both world premieres at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Earlier that month, CRN splashed the 60m Nuvolari Lenard-designed M/Y 141, an all-aluminium yacht that has been cruising in the Caribbean this year.

In March this year, CRN launched the 72m M/Y 139, which features exterior design by Andrea Vallicelli and an interior by Nuvolari Lenard. In May, the shipyard then received the hull and superstructure of the 67m Project Maranello, another Nuvolari Lenard design.

Also in May, the CRN section on the east side of the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard launched the third hull of the all-aluminium Pershing 140 – hull one is in Hong Kong – and the third steel-hulled Riva 50Metri.

As well as Project Maranello, due to launch in 2025, CRN’s current projects include the 85m M/Y 144 – the shipyard’s biggest build to date – and the 70m M/Y 145, both scheduled for 2026. It also continues to oversee its sister brands’ metal builds such as hull four of the Pershing 140, hull one of the Riva 54Metri and the first Custom Line Navetta 50.

CRN handles the largest builds for Custom Line, which produces all its fibreglass models in sheds on the west half of the 80,000sqm Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard, which includes 33,000sqm of covered facilities. The site enjoys 250sqm of seafront on the Adriatic coast and can provide berths for fitting out and finishing up to 15 superyachts simultaneously.

Facilities include nine high-tech sheds, all fully heated, air-conditioned and comprehensively equipped. They feature state-of-the-art air-extraction, compressed-air and centralised technical-gas systems, heating and power-generation systems, and two overhead cranes for handling and installing materials on board.

In total, the sheds can accommodate up to 24 superyachts under construction at the same time, while hardware includes a 670-tonne travel lift for launching metal and composite ships of up to 50m, as well as hauling out vessels for testing.

There has been a recent upgrade of the building dedicated to crews and client captains, yacht surveyors and CRN dockers, who often stay at the shipyard for long periods of time for testing, trials and delivery of the yachts.

Meanwhile, a series of renovations are underway to create more modern and functional spaces dedicated to CRN office staff, management and design team and the entire metal world.

Scheduled to be ready by the end of this year, the new building in Via Enrico Mattei will house CRN’s technical office, project and production management, project architects and engineers, ship managers, as well as the purchasing, planning and control, and logistics departments.

Furthermore, in 2024, a new building will be built dedicated to showrooms and hospitality areas, to yacht owners and their families.

BUILDING ON HISTORY

CRN’s production facilities in 2023 have little in common with the original facilities in 1963, when Sanzio Nicolini founded Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali (CRN), although the forward-thinking, innovative spirit instilled by the Marche-based entrepreneur ensured the builder’s remarkable rise. In 1956, Nicolini had set up Navalcraft, which formally became a part of CRN in 1964.

A maritime hub in the Mediterranean for 2,400 years, Ancona was then entering its halcyon days, boosted by the founding in 1959 of what would become the Marche Polytechnic University. The city’s southern quay was a hive of enterprise and along with CRN, shipyards included Castracani, Mario Morini and Vincenzo Marsili, and component maker Cooperativa Tommasi.

With a shrewd eye for the market, Nicolini used his metalwork experience to bring something new to Ancona’s manufacturing landscape. He expanded the company’s offering beyond fishing boats

and tugs by constructing new metal hulls to transport workers quickly to the Adriatic gas rigs, then a growing industry.

The 19.2m Lidymar was launched in 1965, while the 16.8m Lidymar II splashed the following year

He also began to apply his pioneering ideas to pleasure yachting. Specialising in steel and aluminium hulls, with first wooden and then aluminium superstructures, he positioned the company at the high end of the market, where it has since remained.

The yard found favour with a highly select and demanding clientele. Working with enthusiastic owners from Italy, Greece, the Côte d’Azur and the Middle East, he quickly built a solid reputation and production soon ramped up.

In a prolific start, 32 boats were built in less than a decade, including the first in an iconic line of 23m yachts, the SuperConero, whose recognisable design laid the foundations for future CRN yachts and was still providing inspiration half a century later as evidenced by Latona (2018).

CRN, Sanzio Nicolini, Costruzioni e Riparazioni, 60th anniversary

Honourable mentions also go to the 21m Papo (1966), 21.6m New Caravelle (1967) and 38.4m Bagheera (1969), then the yard’s largest pleasure vessel to date.

THE 1970s: GROWTH & COLLABORATIONS

The 1970s were the years of the partnership between Nicolini and Carlo Riva, heir to the Riva dynasty, who had been seeking a capable ally in Italy to build large steel yachts. The result was two historic boats: one Marco Polo, inspired by the SuperConero, and one Vespucci.

CRN yachts also acquired a visual motif in the form of a special ‘bow chine’ inspired by the world of fishing boats.

The yard’s emblematic creations included the 31m Gazella (1974), the famous 35m Moneikos (1976) – initiating the yard’s ongoing tie-up with Ancona-based VideoWorks, a long-time leading developer of audiovisual and home-automation systems – along with the 35m Caribe III (1979) and 36m Santa Cruz Tres (1979).

In 1978, CRN built its first 45m-plus yacht, the 47.2m Fath Al Khair , for the Emir of Qatar. This was a seminal project, as vessel sizes grew with demand from an increasingly sophisticated market.

THE 1980s: INNOVATION & CUSTOMISATION

The 1980s were the decade of ever-increasing customisation and loyal repeat clients who kept coming back to CRN for one new yacht after another. Craftsmanship and full-custom production were becoming crucial concepts.

The owners were assisted every step of the way from before the contract was signed through to delivery and beyond, putting them at the heart of a process that made them feel special and unique. This approach remains a hallmark of the shipyard’s work to this day.

CRN, Sanzio Nicolini, Costruzioni e Riparazioni, 60th anniversary

The innovative F100 was delivered to Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli in 1983

In the mid ’80s, Nicolini began to work with Mario Sardella, head of the historic Mario Morini yard. The collaboration yielded four yachts under the Cantiere Navale Nicolini brand: Yahala (1983), Luwida (1985), Alhaja (1986) and Al Menwar (1988).

Morini took care of the steel and light-alloy work along with onboard systems, while Nicolini provided the outfitting. With this joint venture, Morini acquired expertise in thin sheet metal machining as well as a fervent attention to detail and familiarity with tailor-made approaches to design and construction – a new concept of pleasure boating that would become central to the CRN story.

Growth brought alliances with figures of international renown, who joined Nicolini in running the shipyard and on the sales side. The visionary George Nicholson, a mainstay of the international yachting scene, became a CRN ambassador, and many prestigious clients arrived through his endorsement. The clientele in these years comprised mainly Greek magnates and Middle Eastern royalty, owners who demanded the highest standards.

The quest for innovation, aesthetic ideals and functional excellence prompted a series of collaborations with distinguished international designers.

Jon Bannenberg completed a trio of bespoke designs for three Greek brothers, each reflecting a different cruising experience: the 52m Akitou (1981), 43m Varmar (1982) and 33m Vanina (1986), the latter inspired by Vespucci and featuring a middeck children’s room made of stone pine.

With the yachts growing bigger, other large builds included the 47m Awal (1980) – CRN’s first yacht with a touch-and-go helipad – 53m New Santa Maria (1984) and 45m Abdulaziz (1987). CRN also designed and built the 33m F100 (1983) for Gianni Agnelli, the high-profile head of Fiat, one of Italy’s largest companies.

Featuring exterior lines by naval architect Gerhard Gilgenast, this extremely innovative yacht has been described as the first true explorer yacht in the pleasure boating world, foreshadowing a style that would be all the rage three decades later.

CRN, Sanzio Nicolini, Costruzioni e Riparazioni, 60th anniversary

Azzurra features exterior design by Gerhard Gilgenast and interiors by Paola Smith

In 1988, the 47.5m Azzurra was built for American owner Edward Sacks, who came to CRN at the behest of Gilgenast, who would go on to design her. The interiors were by Paola Smith, the first woman to win a prestigious international yacht interior-design award, of which she went on to claim many. Azzurra became a sought-after worldwide success, as her charter price eloquently shows.

Over the years, the list of prominent designers who bestowed their signature touch on CRN’s boats grew longer. In 1986, Terence Disdale designed both the exterior and interior of Il Vagabondo , leaving his mark on an exclusive yacht inspired by a more traditional concept of luxury, including the first-time use of lifts inside a yacht.

Other outstanding yachts built in the ’80s included the 44m Jameel (1985) and 41m Nourah of Riyad (1987), while 11 ferries of 32-54m also hit the water. The last yacht of the decade, Maracunda 50 (1990), featured interior design by Alberto Pinto.

During a decade that shaped the history of Italian yachting, construction began on the shipyard’s new headquarters, which has been CRN’s home since 1986. The company also restructured with an ever-keener eye on the North American market.

THE 1990s: LESS BUT BIGGER YACHTS

The Gulf War broke out in 1990 and deeply affected the following decade for CRN. The company’s clientele was heavily concentrated in the Middle East and the conflict undermined the market, so the decision was made to diversify, extending activities to refitting and the purely commercial side.

Production slowed down and only seven yachts touched the water in this decade. However, the dimensions can be considered remarkable, while important names continued to collaborate with the shipyard, with Terence Disdale designing the 65m Awal II (1991) and 50m Sahab IV (1997).

CRN, Sanzio Nicolini, Costruzioni e Riparazioni, 60th anniversary

Francois Zuretti designed three other historical yachts: the 48m Pegaso (1996), 50m Pestifer (1998) and 61m Numptia (2000), distinguished by her round stern.

Numptia was also an expression of CRN’s continuous focus on devising innovative methods for hull transport. For the first time, three sections of the ship were transferred from the shed to the launching yard by means of trolleys – a fast, efficient method that paved the way for today’s handling methods.

In 1999, the decade ended with a significant boost for the CRN shipyard after it was purchased by the Ferretti Group, which stemmed from Ferretti Yachts and Custom Line, and also includes Pershing (acquired in 1998), Riva (2000), Itama (2004) and Wally (2019).

THE 2000s: NEW CENTURY, NEW START

The first landmark of this new era was Magnifica , a splendid 43m yacht designed by Nuvolari Lenard and launched in 2001, the first of a successful range. CRN and Custom Line also merged that year, making Ancona the hub of megayachts within the Ferretti Group.

CRN, Sanzio Nicolini, Costruzioni e Riparazioni, 60th anniversary

In 2002, CRN acquired the Mario Morini shipyard, which had built 280 ships and brought expertise in steel construction. The union between CRN and the Mario Morini shipyard gave rise to the current, almost 80,000sqm site. Variations of yachts followed one after the other until there were five in a year, with the CRN fleet again growing rapidly.

Inspired by Magnifica , the 46m Kooilust Mare (2003) and Saramour (2005) designed by Nuvolari Lenard introduced the concept of ‘fully customised’ megayachts built on the same naval platform, an important step in CRN’s development. The shipyard’s articulated naval platform system guarantees flexibility and reliability in yacht construction, facilitates the planning of field work and has a positive effect on production, testing and delivery times.

A collaboration began with the Zuccon International Project architectural firm, resulting in the 54m Ability (2006), with four decks, vertical glazing, large interior volumes and an imposing appearance that became CRN’s trademark.

CRN, Sanzio Nicolini, Costruzioni e Riparazioni, 60th anniversary

The 54m Maraya (2007) was the first yacht with an openable sea deck and was followed by the 60m Givi (2007), 57m Romance (2008), 60m Tacanuyaso MS (2008), 60m Blue Eyes (2009), 60m Mimtee (2010) and 60m Darlings Danama (2011). Nuvolari Lenard again collaborated with CRN on the 72m Azteca (2010), formerly Clarena II .

Also in the second half of the decade, CRN expanded its portfolio and diversified its production by adding composite construction to its traditional steel and aluminium production. Thus, two composite superyacht lines were born, leading to six units of the CRN Custom Line 128’ (40m) and seven of the CRN Navetta 43 (43m).

FROM 2012: CONTINUED GROWTH

In January 2012, the Ferretti Group was acquired by China’s SHIG-Weichai Group, which became the majority shareholder, securing a 75 per cent share of the entire company.

Later that year, CRN launched the 60m J’Ade , notable for its revolutionary superstructure design, interior innovations and first floodable garage, a worldwide unicum for this type of boat, in which a technical space is transformed into a living area.

The 80m Chopi Chopi (2013)

Delivered in 2013, the 80m Chopi Chopi became the largest yacht built by CRN and will remain so until the 85m M/Y 144 is completed. Other notable builds included the 61m Francesco Paszkowski-designed Saramour (2014), a true ‘floating art gallery’ characterised by clean lines.

The 73m Yalla (2014) designed in collaboration with Omega Architects was the first vessel to be produced by CRN on the new 12.5m-wide naval platform.

Garage-cum-living area on the 55m Atlante (2015)

In 2015, CRN launched the astonishing, military-inspired Atlante (55m), whose aft main deck features an innovative, multi-purpose area that can transform from a full-beam tender garage into an openair living area. The year also marked the launch of the 46m Eight following a refit, the first in the shipyard’s history.

The decade continued with the 74m Cloud 9 (2017), a spectacular combination of technical expertise and cutting-edge design, with refined interiors by Andrew Winch.

The 50m Latona (2018), designed by CRN’s Technical Department with Zuccon International Project, includes a balcony that can be used while sailing, a terrace overlooking the sea that can be opened at anchor, a beach club and a floodable garage for the first time on this size of yacht.

CRN, Sanzio Nicolini, Costruzioni e Riparazioni, 60th anniversary

The 60m Voice was the first CRN yacht to achieve IMO Tier III certification

Zuccon also designed the 79m Mimtee (2019), which features interiors by Laura Sessa, while the 60m Voice (2020) was the first CRN yacht to achieve IMO Tier III certification and was also notable for its aerodynamic exterior and bold colours.

With three yachts ranging from 52-62m delivered last year, a 72m superyacht splashing this year, and three projects from 67m-85m in build, the only way is up as CRN looks forward to its seventh decade in Ancona.

crn motor yacht rio exterior

First look: Inside 62m CRN superyacht Rio

Italian shipyard CRN , a brand of Ferretti Group, has unveiled the first images of its 62 metre superyacht Rio ahead of her premiere appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022.

Delivered in May , Rio was designed by CRN in partnership with Omega Architects and is the first collaboration between the pair since the 73 metre Yalla in 2014.

The yacht was built under the management of TWW Yachts and is a full-custom build with a steel hull, aluminium superstructure and  "supremely sporty" exterior that’s defined by a near-vertical bow, gentle arches in the superstructure and long lines of glazing.

Pulina Exclusive Interiors has helmed the yacht’s interior styling. Natural light is a key design point on board, and the Italian design studio ensured a bright and airy ambience with far-ranging views available across her decks.

This is particularly notable in the “luminious” main saloon, which the yard has described as a "single eye-catching space encapsulating all the elements of style that define the yacht's design."

The yacht follows a contemporary, yet playful theme that appeals to all generations. The designers haven’t shied away from vibrant colours and tropical patterns, fulfilling the owner’s request for  “bright, colourful spaces and a happy atmosphere for the younger family members to enjoy”.

A high level of detail is evident across the yacht's spaces, with hand-painted panels in the owner’s lobby, custom artworks in the saloon and a bar made from a slab of highly sought-after Azul Macauba marble that welcomes guests as they step in from the exterior decks.

Elsewhere, the design team has used a mix of white lacquered oak, delicate cotton wallpaper and warm Crema d’Orcia limestone to add character to the contrast. In the central lobby, a staircase made of bleached pickled oak and ice-white leather takes pride of place.

Pops of seafoam green and fuschia pink make an appearance on board Rio , but crisp blues and sharp navy maintain an air of sophistication throughout.

Alongside the “palatial” main saloon, guests will find a bespoke round drum table that seats up to eight and an American bar that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Accommodation is for up to 12 guests across one owner’s suite and five guest cabins. These are comprised of two full-beam VIPs – one on the main deck forward, the other on the lower deck - and three suites on the lower deck. There are also nine cabins for the 15 crew.

The owner’s suite has been conceived as a “haven of privacy”, which offers 180-degree views and private amenities including a study area with a desk that can be rotated 90 degrees. The suite also benefits from a freestanding bathtub that allows the vistas to be soaked up from the comfort of a bath.

At the bow, an open-air lounge, spanning 115 square metres, is directly accessed from the master cabin. Here, the owner or principal charterer can make full use of a recessed dip pool during the day, or turn it into a dancefloor by nightfall.

One of the yacht’s clever design twists is the mooring area below the owner’s deck, which has been created so that crew completely avoid the owner’s private spaces when they require access.

Tender storage is located in the foredeck, where there is space for two jet skis, a collection of toys and an 8-metre 8-metre Pascoe Beachlander tender. A second tender of almost 5 metres is on hand for the rescue, and there is also a 14 - meter SACS Rebel 47 tender chase boat in her arsenal.

In terms of wellness, Rio plays host to a Hamman, shower and fully-equipped gym. Adjoining this area is a multi-purpose waterfront lounge area with a TV that doubles as a whiteboard for games and other entertainment.

The yacht has a top speed of 15 knots and cruises at 12 knots, powered by her twin Caterpillar engines. The yacht is IMO Tier III-certified1, assuring drastic reductions of 70% in harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the engine exhaust, according to the yard.

Four fully custom yachts are currently under construction at the CRN shipyard: the 72 metre CRN 139 , 60 metre CRN 141 , 52  67 metre CRN 143, and the recently launched 52 metre superyacht Ciao .
