Cleaning a boat: The ultimate guide

  • Cleaning a boat: The ultimate guide

Keeping your boat clean and looking good isn’t just a matter of pure vanity; it’s also an important part of basic boat maintenance. Knowing how to clean a boat is imperative for any boat owner as it extends the useful lifespan of materials exposed to the environment, improves functionality, and increases resale value. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the step-by-step process of cleaning the different pieces and parts of your boat, both inside and out.

The importance of boat cleaning

Boats are constantly exposed to harsh marine environments, such as saltwater, UV rays, and algae growth. Cleaning your boat regularly not only enhances its appearance but also prolongs its life and maintains its performance. A clean boat is more fuel-efficient, handles better in the water, and is less prone to corrosion and deterioration.

Preparing for the cleaning process

Before you start cleaning your boat, gather all the necessary supplies to ensure a thorough and efficient cleaning session. Having the right tools and products on hand will make the cleaning process more effective and save you time.

Read our top notch articles on topics such as sailing, sailing tips and destinations in our Magazine .

How to clean a boat interior

Whether you have a big cabin cruiser or a bowrider with a head compartment, each part of the boat’s interior has its own needs. Items to consider include:

Marine carpet

Marine carpet is commonly found in many cabins and head compartments of smaller boats. Use a vacuum to remove loose dirt, then scrub it with a stiff-bristle brush, soap, and water. Larger boats and inside cabins may need a wet-vac to remove remaining water.

Non-slip fiberglass

Fiberglass with molded-in non-skid is commonly found both inside and outside boats. Scrub it with a stiff bristle brush, soap, and water. Tough stains can be treated with a cleaner that has a bit of bleach, but rinse thoroughly to protect fiberglass surfaces.

Clean vinyl with gentle soapy water and a soft rag to maintain its appearance and avoid damaging anti-microbial treatments. Tough stains should be treated with a dedicated marine vinyl cleaner.

Remove cushion covers and wash them in cold water. Sprinkle baking soda on the foam, mist with a vinegar-water mix, and let it air-dry before putting the covers back on.

Clean marine heads like home toilets. Run a few cups of white vinegar through the lines monthly to prevent scale and calcium buildup.

How to clean a boat exterior

Now, let’s look at how to clean the boat’s exterior. Items to address include:

Hull and gel-coat surfaces

Apply a base coat of two layers of paste wax each spring and monthly, apply liquid carnauba wax for extra shine. Wash the boat after each use with a boat soap containing liquid wax.

Hull bottom

Treat the hull bottom like other gel-coated areas if your boat is kept on a trailer or lift. If the boat sits in a wet slip, it probably has antifouling paint.

Canvas and clear canvas

Hose down boat canvas monthly to prevent staining. For clear canvas, wash with soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge after each trip.

Boat engines need regular cleaning inside and out. For outboard engines, wax the cowl and exterior and wash with soap and water after each use. Leave inboard engine cleaning to professionals.

Clean teak with soapy water and use acid-based teak cleaner as needed to restore its appearance.

With these effective boat cleaning techniques, you can ensure your boat remains spotless and well-maintained, ready for unforgettable experiences on the water. A clean boat not only looks good but also operates efficiently and retains its value. Now that you know how to clean a boat inside and out, get ready to enjoy countless adventures on your pristine vessel.

Boat Cleaning 101 – Key Steps and Products to Use

Keeping your boat clean is important to not only make your boat look nice but also to protect your investment. In this article, I describe common boat cleaning steps and identify some of the best boat cleaning supplies based on decades of boat ownership experience and feedback from hundreds of boat owners in our prior surveys. Key topic covered are listed below.  To skip to a particular topic, just click on the heading.

How to Clean Boat Seats

How to clean boat carpet or vinyl flooring.

  • How to Clean Boat Decks (non-skid surfaces)

How to Clean Boat Windshield

How to clean hull of boat, how to wax a boat, cleaning a boat interior.

  • The key thing to know about marine vinyls is that they are pre-treated from the manufacturer with antimicrobials.  These diminutive agents help protect against mold and mildew. Therefore, you should stay away from harsh chemical cleaners that can remove them. Instead, use a gentle soap (such as Dawn dish soap) or a cleaning product specifically made for marine vinyls.  Also use a soft rag instead of a stiff brush to avoid damaging the vinyl or threads.

yacht cleaning

  • Start by vacuuming the carpet or vinyl flooring and then rinse to remove loose dirt or debris. Next, mix a mild soap such as Dawn with warm water in a bucket and then gently scrub with a brush.
  • You can spot treat stains with a mixture of 1-part white vinegar to 7-parts water.  Apply the mixture with a sponge to the area to be treated and then let stand for 5 to 10 minutes (longer for tough stains) before scrubbing.  Vinegar is all-natural and environmentally friendly.  If this doesn’t remove the stains from your carpet, you can try regular household carpet cleaner products.
  • Rinse your carpet or vinyl flooring when you are finished scrubbing.  Be sure the surface is fully dry before covering your boat to avoid mildew.

How to Clean Fiberglass Boat Decks (non-skid surface)

yacht cleaning

  • Start by rinsing the deck with water from bow to stern using a garden hose or pressure washer.
  • Next, mix a cleaning agent such as Dawn dish soap in a bucket and apply with a scrub brush. Note: if you have some wax on your deck that you want to preserve, use a Boat Wash or a “Deck Cleaner” instead since these will not remove the existing wax.
  • Rinse with water and air dry.

After you have completed washing your fiberglass boat deck, it is a good idea to also wax it just as you do with your hull to prevent staining and oxidation.  A key difference, however, is that you will want to use a deck wax like this one from Star Brite to avoid a slipping hazard.

  • If your windshield is made of glass, then regular Windex is fine to use. Another option, and what I now use, is a mixture of 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water that you combine in a spray bottle.  Spray on and wipe down with a soft, microfiber cloth.  The advantage of this approach is that it is economical, it removes hard-water spots, and doesn’t streak.  Increase the amount of vinegar for tougher water spots.
  • However, if you have an acrylic windscreen (commonly used on bass boats and pontoons), do NOT use any detergents or glass cleaners like Windex as these may damage it.  The vinegar and water option is definitely the way to go.

CLEANING A BOAT EXTERIOR

yacht cleaning

  • Start by rinsing down your hull working from top to bottom.
  • If your hull is in decent condition (limited scum or marine growth) and you are not trying to preserve wax (or plan on waxing your boat afterwards), then you can use a regular dish soap such as Dawn in a bucket of warm water. Note, however, that this will remove any wax that was on your hull.

yacht cleaning

  • When you are all finished scrubbing your boat, give it a final rinse and then wipe with a microfiber cloth or chamois to avoid water spots.
  • Note: if you have an outboard motor, you can wash the outside at the same time and in nearly the same way you wash the hull. However, it is recommended that you use a rag or a soft (yellow instead of blue) brush to avoid scratching the surface.

Waxing the hull of fiberglass boats is important to inhibit stains, minimize oxidation (dull, chalky look that occurs with too much exposure to the sun) and help your boat look nice. You should do a regular waxing at least once or twice a year.  There are two general types of wax to use for this purpose.  Be sure to get one that is specifically made for marine use:

yacht cleaning

Note that if your hull has some defects or oxidation, you might want to treat it with a polish or compound before applying the wax (and you will definitely want an orbital polisher for this job so that your arm doesn’t fall off).  Check out my previous article on “ Washing and Waxing: How to Detail a Boat ” for a more detailed description of the different types of products to use to treat hull imperfections.

Concluding Thoughts

Many people view boating as a way to relax and unwind and enjoy time with friends and family.  Spending time cleaning and waxing your boat certainly detracts from that goal.  But, if you follow the steps above and use some of the products listed, it should make the process a little easier and remove some of the guesswork.

Please note that I provided links to many products above for your convenience.  These are things that either scored highly in my prior research or that I personally use and have had good experience with.  If you click on a link and buy the listed product or any other, I will receive a small commission that will help support BoaterInput.

what our members are saying about their boats

“This boat gives you a fast, dry, and smooth ride.”  (Overall Rating: 10)
“Wide beam and large cockpit.  Love the open feel.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“The Formula brand is a well-built boat that uses high end components and has things such as fume detection for the bilge and other items like that are not seen on other brands. The seats are very comfortable and both interior and exterior are holding up extremely well. The boat handles great and has a very solid ride.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“Not many people are very familiar with Bryant but they build a quality boat that is a bit more affordable than some of the other premium names. I have had this boat 5 years now and it looks great and rides well.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“It’s the best all-weather boat I’ve owned for lakes. Handles just about anything that’s marginal to get back to the ramp safely. And plenty of storage room, actually it could be too much room at times.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“When I bought it , it was probably the best deal one could find for a fiberglass bass boat with absolutely no wood in it. The boat and Yamaha 70 have performed flawlessly for 12 years.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“This model falls into the category that most salt water fishermen refer to as “Bay Boat”. It has a center console which provides tremendous stability and a deeper hull than a “flats” boat for smoother ride on choppy water. The boat is made for fishing and has very few comfort features for cruising. It is not my favorite hull because it draws a little more water than some of the other shallow water bay boats such as Pathfinder.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“Great boat, solid ride… great bay boat for fishing. Fast with Yamaha 300!!” (Overall Rating: 10)
“Excellent high-end Pontoon Boat with a 400hp R Mercury outboard Racing motor. Too nice to be a Pontoon Boat. Rear twin electric recliners.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“We had a lot of fun using this boat the past summer. it can accommodate nine persons, has comfortable seating for all passengers, is easy to board for both passengers and water skiers, handles well in rough water, is easy to launch and dock, looks great on the water and drew lots of compliments from all who saw it on the water.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“Great boat and a great price point. Carolina flare and deadrise makes for an exceptionally dry boat which I would expect from any Carolina boat builder that builds primarily for the Atlantic. This is not a shallow draft boat for its size, however….I would say it drafts in 12″ +.” (Overall Rating: 8)

Yacht Cleaning Tips: Detailing and Washing 101

Michael Castorino Uncategorized

Cleaning your yacht is not just about maintaining its appearance but also ensuring everything runs well and performs optimally. Not only does a well-maintained boat cruise on the seas better, but it will be safer and more reliable, which is imperative if you spend extended amounts of time at sea or love to cruise long distances.

If you are new to the world of yachting or owning a boat, learning all there is to know about their maintenance and cleaning is an essential part of life as a yachtsman. Here are several tips for detailing and washing your boat to ensure maximum performance and safety while keeping it looking neat and tidy.

The Engine

To ensure the longevity of your boat’s engine, routine cleaning, and servicing are vital. If you have an outboard engine, you can begin by waxing the cowl and exterior before using soap to clean it up after regular use. In the case of an inboard engine, you should regularly wipe away any build-up of dirt and debris but beware of any electrical wires and parts that you may accidentally damage with cleaning chemicals.

In most cases, leaving the engine cleaning in the hands of an expert is the best course of action. If you do it yourself, use microfiber cloths and avoid using abrasive bristle brushes.

The hull sides need protection to avoid oxidation and maintain their appearance. You should add two layers of paste wax every spring and give the hull an extra shine every month using a liquid carnauba wax. It will help it remain in good condition, but you should also give it a regular wipe-down with soap and water after every boat outing you make.

You should clean the canvas every month at the very least to prevent stains from embedding into the material and giving your yacht a dirty appearance to onlookers. Using a soft-bristle brush and soap, gently scrub the canvas and rinse out any dirt, but you may need to do a heavier cleaning periodically to remove more challenging and lasting stains.

For deep cleaning, you can use a mix of bleach with a quarter-cup of soap with a gallon of water, or you can try using a baking soda and soap mixture. For more specific information on the best cleaning materials, consult the manual provided by the manufacturer.

Teak is an ideal wood because it contains high amounts of silica and oil that make it durable and resistant to weather, rot, fungi, and mold. To clean and maintain your boat’s teak, scrub the surface with soapy water regularly. In some instances, the teak may begin to blacken, at which point you will need to use an acid-based cleaner for the job. If you use such a cleaner, be sure to remove the teak from the boat, as the chemicals can damage the gel coat, paint, and metals aboard your yacht.

The Interior

In addition to cleaning the exterior of your boat, the interior also needs attention from time to time. Many yachts have marine carpeting that you must clean using a vacuum to remove loose dirt before scrubbing it down with a soft-bristle brush and a mixture of soap and water.

Additionally, any vinyl components – which you will find in a lot of seating – must be treated with anti-microbial to protect them from mold and mildew. Otherwise, it is just a matter of using soapy water to wipe or scrub all surfaces and regularly cleaning any cushions and furnishing you have aboard your yacht.

Boat and Yacht Interior Cleaning

Professional yacht cleaning services.

Keeping your yacht clean is more important than you might think. Just sweeping around a little bit and cleaning the dust will not do the trick - to clean a yacht properly, one must hire professional yacht cleaning services.

Neglecting to clean a yacht regularly might result in its not functioning properly. Due to a yacht's constant exposure to salt water and all types of weather conditions, processes like rusting and corrosion are common and when left unattended, they may harm the yacht's shape, and more importantly, its proper functioning. To avoid such mishaps, which can potentially lead to accidents, it is therefore crucial to have yachts cleaned regularly by professionals.

Who can you contact to clean your yacht?

The question is who can do the best job of cleaning a yacht?

Regular cleaning services do not have the high level of expertise and experience required to clean boats and yachts. One must contact a service that is qualified to do such work, as cleaning yachts and boats requires being aware of many technical issues, as well as special knowledge of materials that can aid in preventing rust and corrosion.

We can do the job

Our service has been in the business for years, and all employees are professional yacht cleaners. With our knowledge and experience, your yacht will be not only sparkling clean after each treatment, but also well-maintained to keep all technical troubles away.

For more details regarding our services and prices, call us today! We will be happy to assist you in any question and we will do our best to satisfy your every need.

A Guide to Yacht Exterior Cleaning and Maintenance

  • by yachtman
  • August 30, 2023 August 26, 2023

yacht cleaning

Yacht owners know the value of preserving their boat’s exterior. This guide gives tips on cleaning and maintaining the outside of yachts.

Clean regularly. Start with a fresh water rinse to remove dirt and debris. Then, use a soft brush or sponge and a mild, marine detergent to wash the hull, deck, and other areas. Rinse off all soap to avoid streaks.

Protect from UV rays, oxidation, and saltwater corrosion. Use high-quality wax or polish to create a barrier. Invest in covers and awnings for storage and bad weather.

Handle minor repairs right away. Water leakage through cracks or gaps can cause major damage. Inspect for issues and repair with marine-grade sealants or epoxy fillers to maintain the yacht’s integrity.

By following these steps, your yacht looks great and retains its value. Remember to clean, wax, and repair to keep it in peak condition.

Importance of Yacht Exterior Cleaning and Maintenance

The need for yacht exterior cleaning and maintenance cannot be overstated. Keeping it up-to-date not only adds to its beauty, but also keeps it running and performing well. Neglecting it can lead to paint, fiberglass, and other exterior components being damaged. This may end up costing a lot to repair .

Cleaning is important for removing dirt, salt, bird droppings, and other contaminants that may form on its exterior surfaces. Not doing so can cause staining and corrosion, which can weaken the structure of the yacht. Cleaning also helps stop the growth of algae and other organisms that can harm the hull.

In addition to cleaning, proper maintenance is key to keeping your yacht in good condition. Inspect for any signs of damage and wear like cracks or dents in the hull or deck. Quick repairs are necessary to stop further damage and keep the yacht in shape.

Polishing the gel coat, waxing the hull, and applying protective coatings help protect against UV rays, oxidation, and saltwater corrosion. These measures not only make the yacht look better, but also make it last longer.

An example of what can happen if you don’t take care of your yacht can be seen in the story of a luxurious yacht left unattended for a long time without cleaning. Saltwater corrosion damaged the metal fittings and external fixtures. The owner had to pay a lot for repairs that could have been avoided with simple preventative measures.

This shows that proper yacht exterior cleaning and maintenance is essential for both practicality and aesthetics. By cleaning regularly and taking care of maintenance tasks, you can keep your yacht operational and looking great without costly repairs.

Necessary Tools and Equipment

To keep your yacht looking great, you need the right tools and equipment. Here’s a list:

Also, use a non-abrasive cleaner to remove tough stains. Wax or polish will protect the exterior from bad weather.

Tip: Pick cleaning products made for marine use. They’re safe for your yacht and eco-friendly.

With these essentials, you can make sure your yacht looks shiny and perfect!

Preparing the Yacht for Cleaning

To clean the yacht, do these things:

  • Gather cleaning supplies like soap, brushes and towels.
  • Remove anything loose from the outside of the yacht.
  • Cover electronics and delicate surfaces with protection.
  • Rinse the yacht with fresh water to get rid of debris and salt.
  • Check the hull for any cracks or damage.

Wear safety gear such as gloves and goggles. Safety is key . Follow these steps to ensure a good clean without any harm.

Steps for Cleaning the Yacht Exterior

Maintaining a yacht’s exterior is key to keep it looking great and ensure it lasts. Here’s a guide to help you effectively clean your yacht:

  • Rinse the whole yacht with fresh water to remove any debris or dirt. This will stop any scratches during the cleaning.
  • Rub the hull and deck surfaces with a marine-grade boat soap using a soft sponge or brush. Pay extra attention to the waterline and stainless steel fittings.
  • Make sure to rinse off the soap completely. Leftover soap will cause streaks or damage over time.
  • For tough stains or grime, use a specialized cleaner or mild abrasive that is compatible with your yacht’s materials. Test it in a small area first before applying it to larger surfaces.
  • Finish by applying a protective wax coating to seal and protect the yacht’s exterior surfaces. This will help preserve its shine and make future cleanings easier.

Remember to inspect and maintain other exterior components of your yacht like stainless steel hardware, teak decks, and canvas covers. Keeping them in good condition will boost the look and extend their lifespan.

Clean and maintain your yacht regularly to keep it in top condition. Doing so will not only keep it looking good but also safeguard its structure for years of enjoyable sailing.

Don’t miss out on giving your yacht the care it needs! Follow these steps to make sure your investment stands out among the others on the water.

Regular Maintenance Practices

To maintain the exterior of your yacht in pristine condition and optimal performance, regular maintenance is key. Here are some important points:

  • Wash and wax: Use a mild detergent and wax to protect surfaces from saltwater, UV rays, and other environmental factors.
  • Inspect and repair the hull: Check the hull for cracks or blisters, and promptly repair them to prevent further damage.
  • Maintain the teak deck: Clean with a special cleaner and seal with teak oil for its appearance and durability.
  • Monitor and maintain metal surfaces: Examine stainless steel fittings, railings, and metal surfaces for corrosion. Protective coating can prevent rusting.

Other areas need special attention too. For instance, propellers should be well-maintained for optimal performance and less fuel consumption. Additionally, keeping proper ventilation in enclosed spaces helps avoid humidity and mold.

To ensure the effectiveness of these maintenance practices, consider the following:

  • Set up a schedule: Create a maintenance schedule according to manufacturer recommendations and keep track of tasks.
  • Use good-quality products: Invest in marine-grade cleaning products, waxes, sealants, and coatings for maximum protection.
  • Consult professionals: Consult yacht maintenance professionals for advice on specific issues or product recommendations.

By following these regular maintenance practices and strategies, you can extend the lifespan of your yacht’s exterior while keeping it aesthetically pleasing and functioning optimally.

Safety Considerations

Safety is a top priority when it comes to yacht exterior cleaning and maintenance. Let’s delve into some key considerations to ensure a secure environment for both crew and passengers.

What safety precautions should be taken? Here’s a table that outlines them:

In addition, other unique factors, such as weather, wildlife, and technical failures, can affect safety onboard yachts.

Yacht exterior cleaning and maintenance has come a long way, with safety standards constantly improving. In the past, crew members were more vulnerable to accidents due to inadequate safety measures. But nowadays, yacht owners can rest assured that their vessels are maintained with a focus on security.

Hiring Professional Cleaning Services

Hire professional cleaners for that stunning look of your yacht! Pros have the know-how and expertise to tackle even the hardest-to-remove stains.

  • They are familiar with the different types of surfaces and materials present on yachts.
  • You save time that can be spent enjoying the yacht – instead of hours spent cleaning.
  • Not only do they clean the outside but also inspect it for any signs of damage or wear.
  • Most offer a satisfaction guarantee.

Plus, they get access to special equipment such as pressure washers and quality cleaning agents that you don’t get with DIY cleaning. When hiring services, ask about their experience with yacht exteriors. Choose a company that knows the unique needs of yacht maintenance.

Exploring the ins and outs of yacht exterior care is clear: regular cleaning, protection from elements, and attention to areas like the hull and deck are essential.

Using suitable cleaning products is key. Gentle yet effective solutions prevent damage to surfaces while removing dirt, grime, and salt residue. Wax or protective coatings offer extra defense from UV rays and other environmental factors.

Pay special attention to the hull. Applying antifouling paint boosts speed and fuel efficiency, and guards against corrosion from marine growth. Inspect and maintain deck fittings regularly to prevent leaks.

Unique details must also be addressed. Check exterior lighting fixtures for proper nighttime navigation. Inspect safety equipment such as life rings and fire extinguishers frequently.

To exemplify the importance of exterior maintenance, here’s a story: a sailor neglected cleaning procedures over several seasons. This caused fiberglass deterioration and cost him a lot. He had to wait weeks to enjoy his hobby.

10 Best Boat Cleaning Products

  • By Brittany & Scott Meyers
  • Updated: July 25, 2019

cleaning products

I know I have said it before, but for those who didn’t know – I am a bit of a neat freak. Not OCD, but I definitely like where I live to be clean, organized, and tidy. This is especially important when you live on a small boat where leaving, say, a stack of magazines on the table can make the space look messy. In addition to being very tidy, I like to keep the boat clean. That way, it smells nice and we avoid germs and bug infestations. Here are our 10 best boat cleaners and tips:

1. Simple Green – This is my go-to every day and everywhere cleaner. There’s nothing this stuff can’t do and it has such a nice, fresh scent that I love. It’s also non-toxic and environmentally friendly, which makes us happy.

2. Fantastik – This stuff is similar to simple green, but seems to work a bit better on wood and on grease. Plus it smells lemony good and I like to change things up from time to time.

3. Bleach – I know, I know. I am going to get some flack from people for using bleach but it really is one of the best cleaning agents out there. We disinfect our water bottles with it, we’ll put a tiny bit into our water tank to keep the water from spoiling, and it’s great in a spray bottle with water to clean and disinfect the toilet and sinks.

4. Amazing Roll Off – It really is amazing! This cleaner is used above deck and is great for stains on fiberglass and on the deck. Just wet the area with water, spray it with some roll off, let it sit for a few minutes and scrub. This product, coupled with some generic boat soap is all we use on our deck. We love the it and have over a gallon on board. Did we mention it’s non-toxic and biodegradable? Well it is!

5. Lemon oil – the interior of our boat has a lot of wood in it and wood, if not cared for properly, does not age well. Making sure to wipe all our wooden surfaces down with a little lemon oil makes our interior look brand spanking new.

6. Ecover toilet bowl cleaner – We try to keep toxic chemicals out of our toilet. Boat “heads” are famous for being stinky but not ours! Oh no! We smell fresh and clean over here – trust me, I make sure of it!

7. OxyClean Powder – when all else fails, we turn to OxyClean. Great for laundry but has loads of other uses as well. When Scott hacked open a coconut on the boat and left the skins overnight on our deck, they left stains all over the place the color of tea. I almost died and just said calmly “fix it.” After trying soft scrub, bleach, spray cleaners and more – he finally tried OxyClean – and it worked, like a charm. It became a top tenner at that moment for me.

8. Non-Ultra Joy Dish Soap – This lemony goodness will actually suds up in salt water which means we actually wash our bodies (and sometimes even hair) with it when we’re at anchor. Of course we’ll also do our dishes with it (in a bucket of salt water). It smells wonderful and they practically give it away it’s so cheap.

9. Dr. Bronners Castile soap – we have been huge fans of this stuff since day one. We love it. Not only is it great to wash your body with (and leaves you with a cool, tingly feeling of freshness) – there are TONS more uses for it as well. It can be a shampoo, an everyday cleaner, and even a laundry soap.

10. Vinegar – This is numero uno in my book. Vinegar, I am convinced, is pretty much the most versatile liquid out there. Not only is it natural and environmentally safe, it has about a hundred different uses. Wipe down your interior wood work with a water/vinegar solution to retard mold growth, coat your veggies in it to make them last longer, pour a little in your toilet to break up any calcification, use it as a disinfectant and so much more. It’s amazing.

Those are the best cleaning supplies aboard our boat and they certainly keep Rasmus looking good. What boat cleaning tips or products have I missed that you love to use in your boat or home?

Optimistic About the War in Ukraine, Putin Unleashes a Purge at Home

Despite years of criticism, President Vladimir V. Putin has only now changed his defense minister and allowed high-level corruption arrests.

Russian soldiers marching in formation in Moscow.

By Paul Sonne and Anatoly Kurmanaev

Reporting from Berlin

Periodic outcries over incompetence and corruption at the top of the Russian military have dogged President Vladimir V. Putin’s war effort since the start of his invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

When his forces faltered around the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, the need for change was laid bare. When they were routed months later outside the city of Kharkiv, expectations of a shake-up grew. And after the mercenary leader Yevgeny V. Prigozhin marched his men toward Moscow, complaining of deep rot and ineptitude at the top of the Russian force, Mr. Putin seemed obliged to respond.

But, at each turn, the Russian president avoided any major public moves that could have been seen as validating the criticism, keeping his defense minister and top general in place through the firestorm while shuffling battlefield commanders and making other moves lower on the chain.

Now, with the battlefield crises seemingly behind him and Mr. Prigozhin dead, the Russian leader has decided to act, changing defense ministers for the first time in more than a decade and allowing a number of corruption arrests among top ministry officials.

The moves have ushered in the biggest overhaul at the Russian Defense Ministry since the invasion began and have confirmed Mr. Putin’s preference for avoiding big, responsive changes in the heat of a crisis and instead acting at a less conspicuous time of his own choosing.

“We have to understand that Putin is a person who is stubborn and not very flexible,” said Abbas Gallyamov, a former Putin speechwriter who now lives outside Russia. “He believes that reacting too quickly and rapidly to a changing situation is a sign of weakness.”

The timing of Mr. Putin’s recent moves is most likely a sign that he has greater confidence about his battlefield prospects in Ukraine and his hold on political power as he begins his fifth term as president, experts say.

Russian forces are making gains in Ukraine , taking territory around Kharkiv and in the Donbas region, as Ukraine struggles with aid delays from the United States and strained reserves of ammunition and personnel . Top officials in the Kremlin are feeling optimistic.

“They likely judge the situation within the force as stable enough to punish some in the military leadership for its prior failures,” said Michael Kofman, an expert on the Russian military and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Demand for change at the top of the Russian military has been pent up since the invasion’s earliest days, when stories circulated about Russian soldiers going to war without proper food and equipment and losing their lives while answering to feckless military leaders.

The anger crested with an aborted uprising led last year by Mr. Prigozhin , who died in a subsequent plane crash that U.S. officials have said was most likely a state-sanctioned assassination .

Mr. Prigozhin , a caterer turned warlord who grew rich on state contracts, was an unlikely messenger. But he put high-level corruption on the minds of Russia’s rank and file and the public more broadly, releasing profanity-laced tirades against Sergei K. Shoigu, then the defense minister, and Russia’s top uniformed officer, Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov. At one point, Mr. Prigozhin filmed himself in front of a pile of dead Russian fighters and denounced top officials for “rolling in fat” in their wood-paneled offices.

His subsequent failed mutiny showed that the problems festering in the Defense Ministry under Mr. Shoigu for over a decade had boiled over and that the populace craved renewal, said a person close to the ministry who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive topics.

The Russian leader now appears to be moving against the very officials that Mr. Prigozhin had been attacking.

The first harbinger of change arose last month with the arrest of Timur Ivanov , a protégé of Mr. Shoigu and the deputy defense minister in charge of military construction projects whom the Russian authorities have accused of taking a large bribe. He has denied wrongdoing. Mr. Ivanov previously attracted the attention of Aleksei A. Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation for his and his wife’s conspicuously lavish lifestyle, including yacht rentals on the French Riviera.

Then, this month, days after Mr. Putin began his new term as president, the Kremlin announced that he had replaced Mr. Shoigu and chosen Andrei R. Belousov, one of his longtime economic advisers, as the new defense minister. Mr. Shoigu was moved to run the Russian Security Council, where he would still have access to the president but would have little direct control over money.

Mr. Belousov has no military experience . But he boasts a relatively clean image and a long government career untainted by large corruption scandals.

“If you want to win a war, corruption at a larger scale impacting the results on the battlefield is, in theory at least, not something you want,” said Maria Engqvist, the deputy head of Russia and Eurasia studies at the Swedish Defense Research Agency.

Still, Ms. Engqvist called high-level corruption in Russia “a feature, not a bug.”

“Corruption is a tool to gain influence, but it can also be used against you at any given time, depending on whether you say the wrong thing at the wrong time or make the wrong decision at the wrong time,” she said. “So you can be ousted with a reasonable explanation that the public can accept.”

Ms. Engqvist said the changes also raised questions about how long General Gerasimov would stay in his position as chief of the general staff and top battlefield commander in Ukraine.

The arrests at the Defense Ministry have gathered pace this month, with four more top generals and defense officials detained on corruption charges. Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, denied on Thursday that the arrests represented a “campaign.”

The corruption charges against top Defense Ministry officials have come alongside promises of greater financial and social benefits for the rank-and-file soldiers, an apparent attempt to improve morale and mollify populist critics.

Mr. Belousov used his first remarks after his nomination as defense minister to describe his plans to cut bureaucracy and improve access to health care and other social services for veterans of the war. And on Thursday, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of Parliament, Vyacheslav V. Volodin, and Finance Minister Anton G. Siluanov expressed support for exempting fighters in Ukraine from proposed income-tax increases.

The high-level arrests are unlikely to root out vast corruption in the Russian military establishment, but they could make top officials think twice before stealing at a particularly large scale, at least for a period, said Dara Massicot, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“It will introduce a chill into the system and make everyone pause as they try to figure out the new code of accepted behavior,” Ms. Massicot said.

Beyond sending an anticorruption message, at least one of the arrests seemed to be aimed at settling a political score.

Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov, a top Russian commander who led forces holding off Ukraine’s counteroffensive, chided the Russian military leadership in a widely seen recording last year after he was removed from his post. He was apprehended on Tuesday on fraud charges, according to the state news agency TASS. He denied wrongdoing, his lawyer said.

“The bottom line is that the war exposed a lot of different problems — corruption, incompetence and openness to public expressions of insubordination — that the leadership feels a need to address,” said Samuel Charap, a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation. “Now is a good time to do this, precisely because there isn’t a short-term acute risk on the battlefield.”

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

U.S. and allied intelligence officials are tracking an increase in low-level sabotage operations in Europe  that they say are part of a Russian campaign to undermine support for Ukraine’s war effort.

Some American-made, precision-guided weapons supplied to Ukraine have proved ineffective on the battlefield , their accuracy badly diminished by Russian jamming efforts.

Ukraine has begun releasing prisoners to serve in its army , part of a wider effort to rebuild a military that has been depleted by more than two years of war and is strained by relentless Russian assaults.

Striking a Chord: A play based on a classic 19th-century novel, “The Witch of Konotop,” is a smash hit among Ukrainians who see cultural and historical echoes  in the story of what they face after two years of war.

Europe’s Defense Industry: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine jolted Europe out of complacency about military spending. But the challenges are about more than just money .

Putin’s Victory Narrative: The Russian leader’s message to his country appears to be taking hold : that Russia is fighting against the whole Western world — and winning.

News Release

Free boat cleaning stations at lake crescent and lake ozette will help combat aquatic invasive species.

Port Angeles, Wash. – Olympic National Park is launching a new aquatic invasive species program to protect Lake Crescent and Lake Ozette. The program will leverage free boat cleaning stations, public outreach, partnerships, and environmental DNA sampling to reduce spread of existing invasive species and prevent the introduction of new invasive species.

Two aquatic invasive species were detected in Lake Crescent in 2019 and 2022: New Zealand mudsnails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) and Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea). Asian clams were identified in Lake Ozette in 2018. Both Asian clams and New Zealand mudsnails are known for reproducing rapidly and spreading quickly, with Asian clams sometimes exceeding 20,000 individuals per square meter.

These invasive species harm native ecosystems. They disrupt ecological processes, outcompete native species, and can impair recreation and visitation in parks. Prevention and public education are the keys to reducing the spread of invasive species. Once these species are established, they are exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to remove.

To prevent the spread of invasive species to other areas, recreational boaters are encouraged to use free cleaning stations at Lake Ozette and the Fairholme, Storm King, and Log Cabin Resort boat launch stations on Lake Crescent. The stations will be deployed on May 22 at Lake Crescent and the following week at Lake Ozette.

Asian clams and New Zealand mudsnails were likely introduced into Lake Crescent by “hitchhiking” on recreational boats. Recreational boaters often unknowingly transport these species when they visit multiple freshwater areas without cleaning, draining, and drying their boats. Cleaning boats will also prevent the introduction species such as zebra mussels, quagga mussels, and Eurasian watermilfoil (present in Lake Sutherland). These species have costly economic impacts for both waterfront property owners and boaters because they clog water intake systems, wells, pumps, and boat motors. They also damage the aesthetic and recreational value of waterfront property, beaches, and swimming areas.

Prevention is the best way to stop aquatic invasive species. Effective boat cleaning can be accomplished in three steps:

· CLEAN: Remove all plants, mud, animals, and organic matter from your watercraft, trailer, waders, boots, and nets before entering the water.

· DRAIN: Pull bilge plug and remove standing water, discarding water on dry ground where it cannot enter lakes or streams.

· DRY: Completely dry everything that comes in contact with water, including your watercraft, before entering another body of water.

Boat cleaning stations should be used before and after boating. All watercraft, including boats, kayaks, rafts, stand-up paddleboards, and other flotation devices should be cleaned. To learn more about how to prevent invasive species, visit: go.nps.gov/protect-our-waters.

Author Randy Wayne White survived Hurricane Ian to write about it

  • Colette Bancroft Times staff

TERRA CEIA — When Hurricane Ian roared ashore as a Category 4 storm on Sept. 28, 2022, bestselling author Randy Wayne White was at his home in Sanibel.

White’s videos of the storm surge went viral: the rising water submerging trees and, at its worst, lapping onto the balcony off the house’s living room — 12 feet above the ground. The wind was so loud, even inside the house, that it drowned out voices.

Watching one video during a recent interview, he says a big rectangular object floating on the surge isn’t the new generator he lost. “No, that’s a refrigerator from a hotel. The West Wind hotel washed up in our yard.”

As Ian raged, White monitored his ham radio. “I was hearing all these distress calls during the storm that were very disturbing. One man said, my wife just got swept off the porch and she’s down by the beach, help me. And there’s nothing you can do.”

After the storm, his house was standing but too damaged to stay in. The floodwaters had breached the floor. For a couple of days, he used his radio skills and knowledge of the island — he’s lived in the area since the 1970s — to assist rescue efforts. And then he went looking for a place to live. And write.

Twenty months later, the repairs on the Sanibel home are almost finished — and White is about to publish a novel based on surviving the storm.

White, 73, has published more than 50 books, 26 of them thrillers featuring Marion “Doc” Ford, marine biologist and not exactly retired secret agent. Doc Ford’s is also a chain of restaurants, two of them in St. Petersburg.

“One Deadly Eye” is the 27th, and, White says, “It’s my best book.”

After the hurricane, White and his wife, singer-songwriter Wendy Webb, moved into a handsome house on Terra Ceia in Manatee County.

“We bought it,” White says. “We have grandchildren here and grandchildren there, so it’s nice to have options.”

White’s ground-floor office space looks out onto mangroves hemming a canal that offers access to Tampa Bay. On the dock lift is a 26-foot boat with the logo for Ford’s fictional company, Sanibel Biological Supply.

In the driveway sits a Ford Raptor pickup, a replacement for a brand-new one claimed by Ian. “The storm washed it out of my driveway, then later w

ashed it right back.”

In the moment, White says, he wasn’t scared. “It happens so fast there’s no time to be afraid. That surge came in like a mountain river.”

But, a reasonable person might ask, what the hell were you doing there?

Not his first hurricane

It wasn’t White’s first direct hit from a major hurricane. It was his third.

In 2004, Hurricane Charley, first forecast to hit Tampa Bay, took a hard right and slammed into Captiva Island as a Category 4, spawning multiple tornadoes. White was living on Pine Island, which lies between Sanibel-Captiva and the mainland, in a century-old frame bungalow perched on an ancient Calusa mound.

The house survived, minus part of its roof, and so did White after spending part of the storm sheltering in his car.

When Hurricane Irma took aim at the Gulf Coast in 2017, White and Webb packed belongings into a trailer, boat and two cars and decamped for a former gun club he leases as a writing retreat, about 40 miles inland.

Irma took a swerve, too — passing directly over the lodge.

Pine trees and power lines were down everywhere, White says. “It looked like the Nazis had bombed it to stop the British.” They had to use chainsaws and axes to open a path to the road.

So when Ian came on the radar, White says, “I figured, after Charley, how bad could it be?

“Minus the tornadoes, it was worse.

“The one in 2004 took three hours. It was like a laser. Ian was eight, nine, 10 hours.”

He had asked Webb if she wanted to fly out to visit her family, he says, but she chose to stay.

During the storm and after, he used his ham radio for communication after power and cell service evaporated.

A licensed operator, he’s loved ham radio since he was “a kid on the farm, listening to Radio Moscow, the BBC, just all over the world.”

His skills served him well the day after Ian, when U.S. Coast Guard helicopters arrived. Not many people stayed on Sanibel, but some did, including neighbors with medical issues. White and a couple of friends sent out the SOS and helped get the choppers to them after discovering the pilots couldn’t map street addresses.

“So we had to guide them in from the ground,” he says. “Thank goodness, in that way, that I stayed.”

Taking notes for a book

Given the intensity of what he calls “a very powerful experience, existential,” when did he start thinking of writing about it?

“Very, very soon,” he says. “Maybe right away.

“I certainly took notes. As it was coming I was observing how animals behaved. You know, people say, birds know what to do. Reptiles know what to do.

“I can tell you birds don’t know what to do. Reptiles don’t know what to do. Sharks might know what to do.

“The pelicans were out all over the place, wandering around like drunks, exhausted. The coyotes must have figured out something, because they’re back.”

After the storm, a lot of humans ended up in a Fort Myers hotel, including White and Webb.

“It was like ‘Casablanca,’” he says, except instead of everybody trying to get letters of transit, they were trying to get boats. “I knew where the boats were.”

He met some interesting people, he says, including a British physician and inventor who inspired a major character in “One Deadly Eye.”

Other characters were based on friends he knew before the storm, a group of migrant workers. He found them after the hurricane in their surge-damaged homes in Punta Rassa, east of the washed-out bridge to Sanibel.

“Some of the best people I saw in the aftermath are my friends from Central and South America. They do the work, they send money home, they don’t bitch and moan.

“When I went to see them, I said, do you have water? No, we don’t have water, but we get it from Publix. That’s a 3-mile walk to Publix. They had no AC. Nobody came to check on them.”

In “One Deadly Eye,” White makes the characters based on them heroic, after exposing them to wild peril.

He does the same to Doc Ford. For Ford, the hurricane isn’t just a hurricane. As the book begins, he learns he may be the target of Russian assassins.

The coming hurricane could be the cover the killers need, Ford thinks: “An island that’s been evacuated is a temptation to lawless types.”

Back in Sanibel, Doc gets a tip from a friend who works in private security: “After the last bad storm in New Orleans, some insurance executive type figured out looting could be big business with the right team. Not the smash-and-grab crap. Organized and mobile with dialed-in targets.”

The executive has the data on “where the rich ones live from Galveston to Key West,” and he has a skilled crew with plenty of high-tech equipment.

Ford wants to neutralize his assassins, as well as protect his neighbors, who include a couple who own a chain of jewelry stores and a doctor with a multimillion dollar art collection.

Not to mention his fiancee, Hannah Smith, and their toddler son, Izaak.

White says he had already done a lot of research on hurricanes. “I’ve read a lot of the stories from old-timers like Totch Brown, Esperanza Woodring, Leon Crumpler. ... I wanted to put all the historical aspects of hurricanes on the scaffolding of a thriller.”

“One Deadly Eye” took him about a year to write. “I wanted to take my time with this book,” he says. “I wanted to make the prose as clean as possible, to pay attention to the sentence rhythms.”

And his own bout with Ian informs the details of the book, from how deafening the sound is during a hurricane to the hazards of navigating the Intracoastal Waterway afterward, when you might encounter a mostly submerged Cadillac Escalade.

Ian also hit three of the Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille restaurants. The one on Captiva, part of the South Seas Island Resort, was closed. The original restaurant on Sanibel re-opened within a few months, and the Fort Myers Beach location, although heavily damaged, re-opened last year.

Post-storm rage

The damage to his own house is almost repaired, White says. “The water came up through the flooring. I lost so many books, first editions from Peter (Matthiessen, a National Book Award winner and one of White’s closest friends, who died in 2014), from President Carter. My wife lost her 1918 Steinway.”

The house was found to be structurally sound, but he’s hesitant about returning, he says. “I don’t know how it’s going to feel to go back. There are a lot of scars. In the old house on Pine Island, it took a year and a half, two years to feel comfortable there again.

“I really believe there’s a post-storm rage. You’ve been assaulted, and you’re angry.

“It’s not over when the storm’s over. You have to deal with the cleanup, the damage, the insurance. Fortunately for me, my adored wife did most of that. But it wears you down.”

Going on two years later, he says, “We still haven’t been compensated by insurance.”

But “One Deadly Eye” hits bookstore shelves June 4, and he’s already at work on the next book.

What’s his advice for people who find themselves in a hurricane’s trajectory?

“I got a ton of crap about not evacuating. But I don’t try to influence anybody. I tell people, wherever I go, don’t go there.”

And what will he do next time?

“We’d fly somewhere, probably days in advance.”
